The Most Excellent Way (Part 6)
(I Cor. 12:31-13:13) Intro: Paul is showing us in the properties of love that love is not only
what you do by it is also what you don’t do. By this I mean that you can
demonstrate the love of God by fleshing out under His leadership the
things that He said shows His love such as patience and kindness. How-
ever, the moment you do the things that He has been describing as not
love you will basically nullify all the good you have done because sadly
what people usually remember is the negative that you do. So, we need
to pray continuously that our L:ord will give us the strength not only to
do the things that He says is love but also to strengthen us to not do the
things that He says is not love. So, this morning we will continue to look
at those properties that Paul describes that are not love.
H. The eighth property of love that Paul mentions is that love
is not easily angered. Now the word “angered” mentioned here means
not easily provoked. It also means no sudden outburst of emotions or
actions.
Now, there are things that we should become angered at. These
are the things that go against the teaching of God’s Holy Word. That’s
exactly what Jesus did when Hen entered the temple area and turned
over the money changers tables and disturbed the over selling sheep for
sacrifices in the temple area. He was extremely angry at these people
because they were only out to make a lot of money by charging exorbi-
tant prices for their services. It made it very difficult for people to wor-
ship God because they were focused upon how they could possibly af-
ford what they needed in order to worship God. The apostle Paul also
became angry when he saw people purposely challenging the Word of
God.
However, neither Jesus or Paul ever lifted up their voices
in anger when they personally attacked. Jesus had the power and
means to wipe out the whole bunch that were persecuting Him.
However, the Bible says that He was led like a lamb to be sacri-
ficed.
Paul, as well, faced tremendous persecutions. He was
beaten, whipped and jailed but never responded to the attackers
in any form of anger whatsoever.
Sadly, angered responses of God’s people or those claim-
ing to be the people of God have done tremendous hurt for the
cause of Christ. People no longer attend church or even worse,
want respond to the call of Salvation because of someone’s out-
burst of anger.
Let me share a couple of stories that I read on this point.
John MacArthur said, “Telling our wives or husbands that we
love them is not convincing if we continually get upset and angry
at what they say and do. Tell our children that we love them is not
convincing if we often yell at them for doing things that irritate us
and interfere with our plans. It does no good to protest, I lose my
temper a lot, but it is all over in a few minutes. So, is a nuclear
bomb blast, a great deal of damage can be done in a very short
time. Temper is always destructive, and even small temper bombs
can leave much hurt and damage, especially when they explode
on a regular basis. Lovelessness is the cause of temper, and love
is the only cure.”
“The great colonial preacher and theologian Jonathan
Edwards had a daughter with an uncontrollable temper. When a
young man fell in love with her and asked her father for her hand
in marriage, Dr. Edwards replied, “you can’t have her.” “But I
love her and she loves me,” he protested. “It doesn’t matter,” the
father insisted. Asked why, he said, “Because she is not worthy of
you.” “but she is a Christian isn’t she?” “Yes,” said Edwards,
“but the grace of God c an live with some people with whom no
one else could live.”
I. The ninth property of love that Paul mentions is that
love keeps no record of wrongs. This is a bookkeeping term as
when people keep ledgers of all records pertaining to their busi-
ness. However, when it comes to personal matters, we are not
suppose to keep ledgers filled with all the wrong doings that have been
committed against us, which in turn we use to demand some kind of ret-
ribution or vengeance against the person or persons whom our ledgers
remind us has committed some wrong against us.
It is true that our brains store up the things that happen to us in
life, and certain things, activities or experiences we face can trigger
those memories. When that happens, we need to ask the Lord to help us
push the delete button before it becomes and issue that we seek to pur-
sue. The more that we seek to not allow those wrong doing records to
cause us to react the more they will lose their influence over us. Our
goal, of course, must always be to be like Jesus who both forgave and
forgot.
Again listen to the words of John MacAuthur. “The same Greek
word is use often in the New Testament to represent the pardoning act of
God for those who trust in Jesus Chris. “Blessed is the man whose sin
the Lord will not take into account: (Rom. 4:8). “God was in Christ rec-
onciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against
them” (2 Cor. 5:19). Once sin is placed under the blood of Christ there
is no record of it. It is blotted our, “wiped away” (Acts 3:19). In god’s
heavenly record the only entry after the names of His redeemed is
“righteous,” because we are counted righteous in Christ. Christ’s right-
eousness is placed to our credit. No other record exists.
That is the sort of record love keeps of wrongs done against it.
No wrong is ever recorded for later reference. Love forgives. Someone
once suggested that love does not forgive and forget, but rather remem-
bers and still forgives. Resentment is careful to keep books, which it
reads and rereads, hoping for a chance to get even. Love keeps no
books, because it has no place for resentment or grudges. Chrysostom
observed that a wrong done against love is like a spark that falls into the
sea and is quenched. Love quenches wrongs rather that records them. It
does not cultivate memories out of evils. If God so completely and per-
manently erase the record of our many sins against Him, how much
more should we forgive and forget the much lesser wrongs done against
us (cf Matt. 18: 21-25; Eph. 4:32)?
Concl. Do people know you by your anger or by your love? Are the
only things they hear you say are the things they done wrong against
you or do they hear words of kindness and forgiveness which demon-
strates love?

Do you find yourself in need of a “quickening”? Has your spiritual power run down? Could it be you have ne-glected your prayer life? Other things have crept in and you put praying on the back burner? If this is the case, you need a “quickening”. Prayer will do it.
