Year 9FTX - “The Themed Cake”
During Term 4 Year 9FTX was given a design brief. This design brief
allowed the students of Year 9 to create their own themed cakes. In
other words, they could design their cake for a specific purpose. e.g.
birthday, christening, wedding, Christmas, whichever occasion they wanted
to celebrate. Many fantastic designs were produced as you can see from
our photos.

Ex Student Career Spotlight
CAPA News Last week saw two of our outstanding Year 10 Drama students take a trip to Sydney to perform as part of the State Drama Ensemble. Janardan Cowell-Curry and Tomas Pocilujko successfully auditioned and then spent half of the last school holiday devising and rehearsing a movement piece. They then performed at the Seymour Centre as part of the State Drama Festival. I was lucky enough to be able to attend and their piece was astonishing. This is what their tutor, Belinda Simon had to say about them – “The group worked effortlessly as an ensemble, they were encouraging and supportive of one another. They created a performance, which highlighted their skills, talent and ability to create an evocative and theatrical work. They were a credit to themselves, their school and to all Drama students from across New South Wales. They were all extremely grateful and we thank you and the school for supporting their opportunity and success. You should be very proud of them.” We are, well done!
In other news Blaise Borrer’s car winning film will be shown on SBS at 4.30pm Friday 17th November, if you don’t catch it, it will be on SBS on-demand after the airing.

From the Deputy Principal
I would like to thank all the people who have been supportive and welcoming over my first few weeks as the Deputy Principal at Bellingen High School. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with the students, staff and wider school community to continue to provide opportunities for the students to thrive and succeed during their time at Bellingen High School. I will share part of my story in that this is my 5th school that have worked in starting at Batlow Technology School, Tumut High School, Griffith High School, Richmond River High Campus in Lismore and now Bellingen High School. My wife and I are both PDHPE teachers and we have four daughters. They are all still in primary school and looking to enrol at Bellingen Public school to start in 2018. When I spoke to the students for the first time there were three key themes that I addressed which were respect, students being their best and following teachers instructions. When talking about respect breaking this down about respecting themselves, their peers, their teachers and our school. In doing this being the best student, friend and school representative they can be. Finally the message about following teacher’s instructions so that everyone can learn and be safe at Bellingen High School. I look forward to building upon the strong partnerships that we have with our local primary schools and creating opportunities for staff to engage in ongoing collaboration to share the expertise we have in our local public schools. Please contact the school to arrange a meeting or time to discuss any concerns or issues that your student might be experiencing and to share their successes.

Bellingen High School 2017 Debating
Debating is a great opportunity for students to develop confidence and demonstrate teamwork and oral presentation skills. Bellingen High entered debating teams from Years 7 and 8 and two teams from Year 10 to participate in this years' State-wide competition. The two Year 10 teams were pitted against Toormina High School. Despite Toormina’s formidable reputation of coming fourth in the State last year, our students were eager to compete after giving up their Tuesday lunchtimes training during Terms 1 and 2. The first rounds of debates was hosted at Bellingen High and were closely contested, with an even day ending in a defeat and a victory for both sides. The follow up round promised more tough debates; however, we were subdued by Toormina's arguments and rebuttals.
The Year 7 and 8 teams had another strong adversary in Nambucca Heads High School; we visited Nambucca for the first rounds and again the debates were closely contested, unfortunately the adjudications did not go our way and we returned to Bellingen having gained useful competition experience. The follow up round promised an opportunity to settle the vendetta, the Year 7’s again were beaten in a debate so close the adjudicator took twenty minutes to decide the verdict. Applying the lessons learned and feedback from previous defeats, the Year 8 team won convincingly.
Our students worked effectively in their teams to deliver convincing cases with structured and well-supported arguments. Highly developed oral presentation skills were on display on every single occasion. Our students were humble in defeat and gracious in victory, and proudly represented Bellingen High School. Those students involved have been recognised since in formal assemblies and have received certificates that will look great in their CVs.
WW1 Lone Pine Re-enactment
As part of their study of World War 1 students in Year 9 were invited to participate in a 1/72 scale re-enactment of the battle of Lone Pine. The battle took place after school over three hours on Tuesday 14th in F1. Terrain was carefully crafted sticks tied together that represented trenches and lichen represented bushes. A soundtrack of Ambient WW1 sounds set the scene alongside paintings of the battle. After rules were clearly laid out, the 12 students rolled a dice to determine whether they would be in the Australian or Ottoman General Staff.
From the first turn the Australian advance was met by artillery and machine gun fire from the Ottoman Turks, almost wiping out the first two waves of Australians, however the final wave of Australians carried the Turkish trenches and ejected them from their defensive positions in hand to hand combat around about 6:00pm. Willow became attached to one miniature named Rodrigo, and insisted on his survival. Poor Chris Hogan lost all his men on the Turkish right flank, after being consistently targetted by Australian artillery and snipers. The students displayed a high level of engagement and demonstrated highly developed content knowledge surrounding the Gallipoli Campaign and the conditions of trench warfare in WW1.

Down at the Ag Plot The Alpacas Have Arrived
The school farm now has two new friends. Two alpacas arrived on
Monday and have made friends with our sheep. They have settled
in well, and should help keep the sheep safe. The students find the alpacas fascinating, and everyone loves them.
Many students have suggested
names for the alpacas, however,
the names have not been finalised.
So, keep the names coming. The names will be announced at the
next Assembly.
Cattle Club Update
The team has been very busy preparing for next weeks
Dorrigo Show. We will take a
team of 20 students, who will
show 11 Red Poll Cattle. This week we are concentrating on
washing and clipping the
cows, and preparing all the
gear required to attend the show.
The students will be
competing in the cattle
judging on Friday, with most of the events taking
place on Saturday
morning.
Bellingen High will also
enter 12 birds in the poultry section, 10
dozen eggs and many
classes in the fruit and
vegetable section.
Come and have a look at our talented Agriculture students at the Dorrigo Show.
2018 Royal Easter Show
Next year the plan is to enter as many
competitions at the show
as possible. Each
competition will become the major study focus for
Year 9 and 10 Agriculture
classes, and the Year 11
Primary Industries Class.
We will be entering pigs,
poultry, sheep and cattle
in the livestock competitions. Bellingen
has already planted the
seeds for the Giant Pumpkin and School Vegetable competitions.
To qualify for selection to attend the show, each student must
attend at least one previous show; successfully compete in one of
the many judging or parading competitions. They must always present themselves, and represent Bellingen High School, in a
professional manner. Spaces are limited, and competition for
spots will be tough.
Are you going to the 2018 Sydney Royal Easter Show?
Rye Grass Trial Completed
On Wednesday, the 2018 Year 12 HSC Agriculture class scored the
Ryegrass Trial, which is in the Norco paddock. They had to rank
sixty-six ryegrass varieties for rust resistance. This trial will form the basis for their compulsory Plant Production Practical. The
students learned about experimental design, repetition,
randomisation and validity. Well done, Year 12.

Sport News 16’s Girls Futsal do it again!
After so far being undefeated this year and being crowned Coffs Coast
Champions, Mid North Coast Champions and Northern NSW Champions the
16 years girls Futsal team added another Championship to their very
impressive list.
The girls played in the North Coast Finals against the winners of the other
Zones. In their first game against Woodenbong they were comfortable
winners 7-2. They then had to take on Wollumbin High School in the
North Coast final. This was a tighter affair and after a mistake near the
start allowing Wollumbin a one goal advantage the girls had to dig deep.
Not everything went their way but they came away in the end with a solid
7-4 win.
There is one final Championship this year – the Australasian Titles in
Queensland. This is a 3-day Championship against the best teams in the
country. They are ready to do their best.
The 14 years girls also made the final and played strongly against
Wollumbin how failed to finish critical opportunities. They went down 5-3
in a game they could have won. They too will be travelling to Queensland
two weeks after the older girls and look ready to really perform.

Girls shine at Australasian School
Futsal Titles
Two teams from Bellingen High, the 16 years and 19 years girls, travelled
up to the Gold Coast to compete at the Senior Australasian School Futsal
Titles
The first game for the 16 years girls was against Canterbury College and
the girls got on top early scoring 3 goals in the first seven minutes, which
put them in a great position. They went on to win 6-1. The second game
against Mansfield State High School was much tougher with Mansfield
boasting a school of some 2,400 students to select from. Despite many
opportunities to score the girls ended with a 2-2 game. Their third game
on the first day of competition was against Murrumba State Secondary
College another large school with an enrolment of over 1,400 students.
Again, some beautiful play set up many opportunities yet finishing seemed a
problem. Again a 2-2 draw.
Day 2 and the 16s didn’t get to play until 5pm against MacKillop Catholic
College from the Central Coast and kept their undefeated record winning 2-
1 again with many missed chances. Their last preliminary game saw them up
against St Ursula’s from Toowoomba. With tired legs and aching bodies the
girls played below their normal standard and went down 5-0 finishing the
game at 8pm (9pm NSW).
Day 3 and there was a semi-final game against Murrumba waiting. The girls
set up many scoring opportunities but again the problem of not finishing,
again and again! A disappointing result going down 3-1, but by no means a
disappointing performance from a great young team. Only one girl in the
team was 16, with 5 fifteen year olds, 2 fourteen year olds and 1 thirteen
year old. The future looks bright for the team next year!
The 19 years girls had their first game against the very strong Assisi
Catholic College. The game was a close affair with opportunities for both
sides. The Bello girls scored first, but unfortunately that was their only
goal and Assisi won 2-1. The next game against Helensvale State High
School saw a lot of near misses by the Bello girls which if converted would
have given them the game, however, a 3-3 draw was the final score.
Day 2 and the 19s girls had to play Brigidine College and despite the Bello
girls dominating possession Brigidine scored first. They equalized 1-1 just
before half time and played the second half with good passing and many
unconverted opportunities taking the game in the last 5 minutes 2-1. Then
the girls had to face Chancellor State College in their second game for the
day. Despite playing well and really putting it to their very strong
opposition, a few errors saw Chancellor take the game 5-3.
Day 3 and a do or die game with local rivals Bishop Druitt College. Both
teams needed a win or scored draw to make the semis. The Bellingen girls
dominated from the start outplaying their opposition winning 7-3.
The semi-final was against 2nd placed Chancellor College. This time the girls
were better prepared for their opposition and came away with the game 3-
1. This put them into the grand final against Assisi Catholic College with
an enrolment of over 1400 students. The girls were tired and injured and
despite their best efforts could not match it with Assisi and went down 4-
0. Runners-up at the Australasian Titles is an amazing result.
Australasian Runners-up (Back row) - Hannah Watt, Lauren Rigney, Emily Ruming, Katie Thorn, Jordan Healy, Kelsey Williamson-Leslie, Liz Hoy (Front Row) - Sophie Russell, Willow Neal, Gaia Malcisi, Zali Rees, Sarah Ludwig
There is still more to come with the 13 years boys, 14 years boys and 14
years girls all to compete at the Junior Australasian Titles in 2 weeks!

Boys Cricket Lachlan Auld stands tall but Toormina too
good
Bellingen under 14’s travelled to Toormina Oval
last Monday to take on Toormina High School who
boasted some very handy cricketers. Needless
to say we needed to bowl well to contain them on
a ground with very narrow, square of the wicket
boundaries. Unfortunately we didn’t. Too many
short deliveries were easy pickings for some of
the Toormina guns, three of them advancing to
over 60 runs. They amassed a total of 6 for
216 in the thirty over innings. Most of our
bowlers were on the receiving end of some big
hits but Jake Bourke (2 for 28 off 6 overs),
Lachlan Auld (1 for 27 off 6 overs) and Quinn
Green (2 for 18 off 5 overs) were our best. The
highlight of our fielding was Joe Mitchell’s
amazing diving catch in the deep from a very flat
hit. Chasing more than 7 an over was a
formidable task but Lachlan Auld (pictured right)
really stood up with the bat with an outstanding 109 runs out of our 30
over total of 5 for 135. Lachlan was only dismissed in the last over and I
was most impressed with the Toormina boys who formed a congratulatory
guard of honour as he left the field. It was quite a moment. No more
cricket for our under 14’s but our boys can be very proud of the effort
they displayed against a very, very good side.
Open Boys Cricket
The Open Boys Cricket side was rapidly brought back to earth on Monday
against Woolgoolga High School. Our bowlers worked hard but each of the
Woolgoolga top order made a
start and they put on a very
healthy 237 from 40 overs.
The pick of our bowlers were
Will Thomas (2 for 40 off 7
overs) and Harrison Knight (1
for 22 off 6 overs). Harry
bowled some outstanding leg
spins and could have ended up
with a few more wickets with a
bit more luck. So it was into
bat for us and we quickly Josh Weldon-Schupp defending a rising
delivery from one of the Woolgoolga quicks

realised that the Woolgoolga bowling attack more than matched their
excellent batting. Unfortunately, we were bowled out for 95. Some
resistance was provided by Lachlan Auld (23 not out), who was stepping up
to the opens team after his brilliant century in the U14’s last week. One
positive to be taken from this season is the fact that the vast majority of
our team are in Year 8, 9 or 10. The future looks bright!
