Principals Report

This is a great time of the year. 2012 is now in full-swing and students and teachers are

busily preparing for the NAPLAN, new programs such as the year 10 Work Studies, Stu-

dent Success and Year 7 Enrichment programs have all been implemented. The ongoing

programs such as Fast Forward and LEAPS are up and running and we also should not for-

get College programs like Rock Eisteddfod. None of these programs would be possible

without the dedication and work of teachers and the co-operation and positive support

of students and parents.

There will always be challenges in the school – bullying, aggressive behaviours, lack of

commitment to work, truancy and as a school community of staff and parents we will con-

tinue to work towards ensuring that all behaviours are positive and productive. Next

term, there will be another parent forum and I encourage all parents to attend to present

their views. This term we have changed the Parent Teacher Evening to include presenta-

tions from students, displays from faculties and inter-agencies which support our students

are invited. I encourage all parents to attend and let us know if this is a preferred format.

Welfare News

18 of our female year 9 & 10 students proudly represented our school at the Young Women’s Festival

last Tuesday. The event was organised by local welfare agency, Rosie’s place and was held at the Hub,

Mount Druitt. The students participated in a conference - style setting with guest speaker and author

from ‘Girlosophy’. The girls were treated to a high tea lunch and were entertained by a very entertaining

Aboriginal female duet. External welfare agencies including; Headspace, Rosie’s Place and Mount Druitt

Wash House, to name a few held stalls with valuable information and services for our female students.

The Young Women’s Festival is held annually in March to celebrate International Women’s Day and the

event organisers were so impressed with our students that they have invited our year 9 girls who attend-

ed to form part of the event advisory team for the 2013 Young Women’s Festival. Thank you and con-

gratulations to our students that attended.

Library Matters!

Our school library is open to all students during recess and lunch breaks. We have a quiet reading area, research area and computers available for research and school work. Students who would like use the computers can purchase a one-off student ID card for $5.00, available at the circulation desk. This al-lows students to reserve access to a computer. From term 2, year 7 students will be able to purchase an ID card. Until then, they can reserve a computer using their temporary ID card.

Reading Café

New books have arrived!

As part of our continually expanding library resource collection, we have a great, new 9 set teen series

based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by internationally renowned author, Charlaine Harris. Come to

the library and borrow or reserve a copy from this fantastic series.

Our reading café resumed for 2012 on Tuesday and so far, we have had an enthusiastic response of 21

students who have joined. Reading café members receive an exclusive membership card and can bring

along a book, as well as their lunch during every Tuesday lunch time. Not only do the students have the

opportunity to borrow and read their favourite books, but it is also a great way to meet new friends.

The library would like to welcome other enthusiastic readers to join our reading café. Interested stu-

dents can collect an application form at the front desk in the library.
