1/7/1482nd Day of School
Learning goal (7.L.1.4): I will be able to list the six types of nutrients and how they are processed by the digestive systemDue Today: nutrient/digestion chartsEvening Assignment: Finish digestive system page
Do Now
1/7/14On the slip of paper, write your name, date, and answer the following without looking at your textbook or computer.
1. List the 6 nutrients.2. Give an example of a food source for
each one.
Digestive System due by 1/8/14
Overall Functions of the Digestive System• Digests food into nutrients• Absorbs nutrients into the blood stream• Eliminates solid waste (feces) from the
body
Describe Function of the Parts• Teeth• Salivary glands• Epiglottis• Esophagus• Stomach• Small Intestine• Large Intestine• Pancreas• Liver• Gall bladderNutrient Description Chart

Nutrients
Substance Description Food SourceCarbohydrates Provides energy for the
muscles, nerves, & the brain.
Fruit, milk, potatoes, rice, corn, pasta, cereals, & bread
Fats Provides energy & “fatty acids”, and helps digestion.
Oils, salmon, meat, dairy products, & egg yolks.
Proteins Builds & repairs cells, fights infection, & makes blood strong.
Meat, eggs, poultry, fish, dairy products, nuts, beans & lentils.
Vitamins Essential for growth & health, facilitates and regulates body processes.
Fruits, green & yellow leafed vegetables, dairy products, eggs, fish, legumes.
Minerals Regulates body processes: iron – oxygen in blood & calcium – in bones
Dairy, vegetables, fish, seafood, red meats, nuts, eggs, grains, salt, soy sauce.
Water Transports, carries waste away, & aids in digestion.
Water, beverages, fruits & vegetables.
Food/Nutrient Processing
Mouth: Food is mechanically digested by teeth. Carbohydrates are chemically digested
by amlyse in saliva
Esophagus: Mechanically digests food through peristalsis.
Stomach: mechanically digests food through churning. Pepsin and hydrochloric
acid digest proteins.
Small Intestine: chemicals from the pancreas, liver, and small intestine
chemically digest carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Most nutrients are absorbed into the
blood stream.
Large Intestine: absorbs water and minerals. It also stores solid waste (feces) for
elimination from the body.
Pancreas: produces amylase, trypsin, lipase
Liver: produces bile which digests fats in the small intestine. Bile is
stored in the gall bladder.
Use the textbook (McDougall p. B45-50, Prentice Hall p. D82-87) and/or Internet to make a flow chart describing how the parts of the digestive system process food and nutrients. Include the type of digestion (chemical or mechanical) and any chemicals involved in digestion. **Put flow chart on your digestive system page**
