SOCIAL SERVICEWe are happy to have Jani Hurst as our social work intern student until May 2017. Welcome, Jani!

It was a beautiful day for a wedding. We wish them many years of happiness. Student news-we welcome a new Sauk Valley radiologic technology student, Ken Catton, who will be with us on Tuesdays and Thursdays. NEW EMPLOYEES

DECONTAMINATION TEAM NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

IVCH welcomed another big group of new employees at the September 12 new employee orientation session.Seated from left: Tom Petersen, Patient Access; Patricia Jackson, Nursing Services; Kim Dose, Peru Medical Clinic; Jennifer Goforth, Nursing Services; Lisa Finnell, Adult Day Center; and Paula McGill, Nursing Services.Standing from left: Andrea Bloomfield, Laboratory; Tamara Cook, Nursing Services; Stephanie Maier, Peru Medical Clinic; Shawna Flanary, Streator Orthopedics; Melinda Hopkins, Hospice; Delilah Burden, Nursing Services; Lylybell Arteaga, Nursing Services; LeAnn Schmidt, HIM; Michelle O’Neill, Nursing Services; Nicole Washkowiak, Care Today; and Jamie Bond, Hygienic Institute.

IVCH NOTES

QUIET NIGHTS ENCOURAGEDWatch for details about a campaign being organized by Nursing Services aimed at reducing noise levels at night at IVCH. The campaign will include asking patients if they would like to have their doors shut between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., and encouraging all employees – not just the nursing staff – working in the nursing units to whisper after 9 p.m. if they need to talk to each other. The campaign is expected to begin October 1. Recent surveys have consistently cited noise as a source of patient dissatisfaction at IVCH.

NEO NOW TWO DAYSNew employee orientation at IVCH is now two days in length. “There is just too much information that new staff members have to know to be conveyed in one day,” said Mary Beth Herron, Human Resources director. Moved to the second day of the NEO agenda were the benefits presentation and hospital tour.

PROSTATE SCREENING SUCCESSFULIVCH’s 22nd annual Prostate Cancer Screening Clinic was held September 8 in the hospital’s Occupational Health Department. Seventy-two men from the Illinois Valley were educated on prostate conditions, including cancer, and given a prostate symptom self-assessment to complete. Blood was drawn for a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test and Dr. Steven Chung, urologist, performed a DRE physical exam to check their prostate gland. The men received results of their blood test and physical exam by mail. One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and screenings help to catch the disease in its early most treatable stage.

Code Orange is used for a hazardous material spill or when a patient who has been exposed to a hazardous material enters the hospital. IVCH maintains staff trained to respond and decontaminate patients. The Decontamination Team is in need of volunteers and will be holding a training class at IVCH October 12 and 13. The class provides information about what is and isn’t hazardous material, the hospital’s role in decontamination and treatment, and how to set up and use the hospital’s decontamination equipment. No prior knowledge or experience is required to be part of the decontamination team. Both clinical and non-clinical staff are needed for the team. Staff who are interested in helping should talk to their managers prior to signing up for the class. To register, contact Nick Fish at extension 3114. If you are interested in taking the training but unable to attend on October 12 & 13, please contact Nick as other classes in the area may be available.

HYGIENIC INSTITUTE COMPLETES EXPANSION –OPEN HOUSE PLANNED

IVCH AUXILIARY PLANS CALIFORNIA TRIP

The Hygienic Institute is going to celebrate the completion of a major remodeling project and the addition of another doctor and nurse practitioner to its staff with an open house from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, September 28.Cindy Bantista, the Hygienic’s director, said the open house will be kid friendly with a scavenger hunt throughout the building. Prizes will be raffle tickets for two bicycles (with helmets) that will be given away. Refreshments will include cookies and juice boxes.Visitors will get to tour the building, see the improvements, and meet and chat with the clinic’s newest staff members, Dr. Yesenia Valdez and family nurse practitioner Jamie Bond. How did the renovation project come about? The Hygienic at one time shared its North Chartres Street building with the local Veterans Administration clinic. When the VA clinic moved, the Hygienic acquired the vacated space and is using it to receive the increased flow of patients coming in with the addition of Dr. Valdez and Bond. The remodeling work almost doubled the size of the reception area in the front of the building and reconfigured the rest of its interior to provide space for 12 exam rooms.A graduate of LaSalle-Peru High School, Dr. Valdez began receiving patients at the Hygienic in August after completing her family medicine residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago Hospital. She earned her medical degree from the UIC College of Medicine after obtaining a UIC undergraduate degree in biochemistry.Dr. Valdez joins Kara Fess, MD, as a second family practice physician at the Hygienic, which also recently welcomed nurse practitioner Jamie Bond to its staff. The new FNP started at the Hygienic in September after graduating from the University of St. Francis in Joliet. Before going back to school to get her advanced degree, Bond worked as a registered nurse, most recently at the Bureau County Health and Wellness Clinic in Princeton and before that at the Women’s Health Care Center at IVCH. Maryfran Crist is the other nurse practitioner on the Hygienic’s staff.

The trip is scheduled for October 8-16, 2017, and you can find out more about it by coming to an informational meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 4, in the meeting room in the IVCH 6th Street office building.
