DAY AT THE DAIRY
PAGE 15 The work never stops on a farm, but
this John Deere equipment is helping
take a load of.
John Deere understands that your success depends on
your ability to one-up the competition. Well, ours does,
too. So when you told us that grade-control technology
has become a must-have tool for maximizing productiv-
ity and minimizing daily operating costs, we listened
closely — and then we got to work. Now we’d like to
introduce you to the Deere 700K SmartGrade Dozer.
This machine just might be the best of all material-
moving worlds. It’s incredibly powerful and versatile. It
bolsters our well-known track load-sensing system with
a fully integrated mast-less, cable-less grade-control
system. It increases operator efciency for novices and
pros alike. And it’s backed by the legendary John Deere
dealer support network.
And that’s all just the tip of the blade.
For example, the Auto SmartGrade settings enable
you to optimize performance based on soil type and
load size. This feature automatically raises the blade
to prevent track slip when large loads are encountered,
improving undercarriage life and fuel economy. And by
preloading machine dimensions into the built-in grade-
control monitoring technology, we were able to reduce
calibration time to about 30 minutes.
Of course, the 700K SmartGrade Dozer also comes
standard with three years of JDLink™ Ultimate
telematics with remote diagnostics and programming
capability. That means, in addition to the SmartGrade
technology that helps you efciently grade each
jobsite, you’ll beneft from solutions that connect
the machine directly to your dealer to help ensure
maximum productivity and minimal downtime.
In many ways, the 700K SmartGrade Dozer is like all
Deere machines — it’s purpose-built using your input.
And in case that purpose isn’t completely clear, it’s to
help your operation be as successful and proftable as
possible, and to stay that way for many, many years.

When it comes to improving track-wear costs, there are a number of ways you can get the most out of your machine. 1. Practice proactive and regular maintenance. Consistent upkeep ensures better
performance and aids your ability to prevent larger issues from developing.
Always be sure to note wear that could be problematic in the future.
2. Perform frequent visual inspections for signs of wear and make sure that the track
tension is properly adjusted. Too much tension can shorten component life up to
50–70 percent.
3. Work with your dealer to perform routine formal undercarriage inspections. This
helps you and your dealer proactively manage maintenance planning, which can
prevent component wear and reduce downtime.
4. Be mindful of equipment operation practices on the jobsite and train operators
accordingly. For example, limit unnecessary reverse operation and high speeds,
adjust for material conditions, and clean the undercarriage to avoid material packing.
You can also reduce track-wear costs and extend undercarriage life by taking advantage of our proprietary undercarriage systems. – Extended Life Undercarriage: Features SC-2™-coated bushings that last twice as long as
standard hardened-steel bushings, efectively reducing downtime and track-wear costs.
– Max Life Undercarriage: Features SC-2-coated bushings, reinforced seals, and larger,
longer-wearing components designed to withstand abrasive material. Additional
materials make wear life more uniform and slow, which minimizes service require-
ments and track-wear costs.

6 THE DIRT
Away from the bright lights and blackjack, the outskirts of Reno exude a more natural way of life. “We’re free out here,” states Bernard Smith, a Reno resident of 50+ years and project superintendent for Granite Construction. “Other than the city, this is one of the most conservative places in the country.”
That tendency to hedge against risk is a common trait in
this industry — one that can make or break a company. So
when it came time to move 1.2-million yards of dirt on the
SouthEast Connector Project, the team at Granite did more
than leave nothing to chance — they stacked the deck.
ACE IN THE HOLE
Estimating a job and submitting a bid is a
thorough, detailed process. Accurate numbers
are a company’s lifeblood, and living up to those
numbers determines its success. “We try to fnd
the easiest and most economical way to move
material,” Smith explains. “The John Deere eight-
wheel tractor-scraper system with triple pans
has worked well with the conditions we have
here. We’re hitting our targets every single day
with these tractors.” And at one-third the initial
investment and half the labor compared to self-
propelled scrapers or competitive tractors and
scrapers, there’s even more to love.

A SOLID HAND
Granite’s feet boasts three 9570R Scraper Special
Tractors. With an output of 419 kW (570 hp) and
hydraulic capacity of up to 435 Lpm (115 U.S. gpm),
pulling three 2412D E Ejector Scrapers with AutoLoad™
is a powerful combination. “These John Deere tractor-
scraper systems are very self-sufcient,” explains
Operator Daniel Bagan. “If we weren’t running them,
the same work would require an excavator, more haul
trucks, possibly a dozer pushing to the excavator, and
a dozer or a compactor to spread out the piles after
the trucks dump.”

The process of building a brighter
future includes ensuring the protection
of any historical artifacts that may
potentially be found. Historic and
cultural monitors representing the local
tribes are onsite daily to protect and
recover any relics uncovered during
the excavation process. Working next
to waterways that lead into tribal
lands places additional importance on
environmental sensitivity — a fact made
lessstressfulthankstotheconfdence
of Bernard Smith, Granite Construction
project superintendent, in the company’s
Deere equipment. “Maintaining respect
for their history and the environment
is really important. From our experience
working with these machines, we can
trust that they won’t break down in
environmentally sensitive areas.”

Smith is equally pleased by the tractors’
efciency. “We’re burning less fuel, emissions
are down, and the fuel economy is there,
too. We could have up to six engines doing
what one does now, and we are moving the
yardage — we’re getting an easy 50 yards per
cycle.” Fewer moving parts means more than
optimized efciency, it also makes for a safer
jobsite.

+ DO MORE WITH LESS
John Deere fully integrated tractor-scraper systems

competitive tractors and scrapers, at one-third

FULLY INTEGRATED, FULLY SUPPORTED
The team at Granite isn’t just pleased with their
machines, they’re also happy with the local support
from their dealer, Papé Machinery. “Papé is a friend
to Granite,” says Smith. “They treat us very well. I’ve
never had a complaint with them at all.”
Bagan agrees and touts the benefts of Deere service.
“The dealer has been very good to us. If we have a
problem, they show up right away. And about every
other week the rep comes out to ride in all the tractors,
so if we have any questions he can answer them and
help us run the equipment better.”
A PARTNER, NOT A VENDOR
The relationship between John Deere and Granite
Construction goes deeper than a transaction or
even support in the feld. Granite has gone as far
as teaming up with the Deere Corporate Business
Division to fnd ways of advancing its Continuous
Improvement program. While touring diferent
Deere facilities, Granite learned about how the
manufacturer implements aspects of Six Sigma
and Lean Manufacturing to ensure both optimum
efciency and top quality. Says Joe Mazzulo, senior
vice president, business processes for Granite,

16 THE DIRT
And chief among his many
responsibilities is managing
Riverview’s mixed feet of equip-
ment. He doesn’t claim any
brand allegiance. His approach to
assembling a feet is simple — the
best machine for the application.
And when it comes to moving,
raking, mixing, and loading mass
amounts of silage all day, every
day, his choice is the John Deere
624K High-Lift Loader.
“We have about 50 624Ks in
our feet. The 624K High-Lift, in
particular, gives us the extra height
we need to efciently load feed into
our mixer trucks,” says Boyle. “It’s
also a very stable machine when
handling heavy loads up-high.”
Before trying the 624K, Boyle
was indiferent to the machine’s
operator-centric features. But
after experiencing them frst-
hand, he quickly realized their
potential value to Riverview’s
unique applications.
When asked about the location’s
unique smell — a concoction that’s
equal parts earthy and sweet —
Boyle just smiles. “That’s the
smell of money,” he says, half-
jokingly. He explains that the scent
comes from the mountains (yes,
mountains) of silage Riverview
requires to feed its herd of
always-hungry dairy cows.
Boyle estimates that there is
approximately 80,000 tons of
silage sitting on this site alone.
THE BEST MACHINE FOR
THE APPLICATION
The two constants of Boyle’s
ever-expanding role are fnding
new ways of reducing operating
costs and boosting productivity.
The 642K High-Lift Loader gives Riverview operators the extra height and stability they need to work safely andefciently.
Riverview gets even more value
from its 624Ks by utilizing the wide
array of attachments available
for them — 4.01-m3 (5.25 cu. yd.)
light-material buckets for moving
feed, rakes for facing the silage
piles, pallet forks for unloading
trucks, bale spears for stacking
straw bales, a snow blade for
pushing snow, and a rubber-tire
scraper for cleaning the grounds.
The Riverview crew even designed
and built its own attachment,
an “unroller,” that simplifes the
process of covering its silage piles.
“The 624K is perfect for us,” says
Boyle. “It has the size and the
volume, and it seems to encompass
all of the diferent areas we work in.”
THE IMPORTANCE OF UPTIME
“Dairy, as an industry, is all about
details,” says Boyle. “If we’re down
a loader, our feed schedule gets
behind, cows recognize it, and
milk production sufers. That’s
why uptime is so important.”
IT’S 6:30 A.M. on a damp and foggy Minnesota morning. At Riverview production isn’t just beginning — it’s in full swing. Today, Jeff Boyle, one of the company’s most knowledgeable operations-side specialists, is showing us around Riverview’s West River location, one of several facilities that make up the company. It’s home to thousands of Holsteins.

Jef Boyle Operations-Side Specialist, Riverview
Riverview has been running Deere
equipment for a long time. And the
operation has a close relationship
with its local Deere dealer, RDO
Equipment. According to Boyle,
RDO has been instrumental in
making Deere a successful part
of the dairy’s operation.
By taking the time to fully under-
stand Riverview’s needs, RDO
provides the exact type of service
and support necessary for the
company to efectively manage
its feet.
“In our operation, downtime is
not taken lightly,” says Boyle. “All
machines break down at some
point. But if you start with a good,
strong, and reliable machine —
like the 624K — and add prompt,
knowledgeable dealer service,
it’s a recipe for success.”
Boyle also appreciates the
availability of his Deere dealer
when training is needed for new
operators. “A lot of our guys arrive
here with strong backgrounds
in the animal science felds but
minimal operator experience,” says
Boyle. “The 624K is a very forgiving
machine that’s easy to learn. And
when operators understand how
the features work, and why, they’re
able to run and care for their
machines much better.”
Silage is the end product of a process that begins when forage crops — such as corn, straw, sorghum, and others — are harvested, individually piled, compacted, and allowed to ferment. At Riverview, trained nutritionists are utilized to carefully formulate and combine silage types, minerals, and other natural ingredients to create an optimally balanced diet for its herd.
WHAT IS
SILAGE?
Riverview Operations-Side Specialist Jef Boyle estimates that there is approximately
of silage sitting on this site alone.
