Rabi-ul-Awwal Please email your comments to [email protected] Continued On Next Page only difference is that one of them was productive doing his studies, while the other was engaged in killing aliens and collecting points on a game con- sole. Time is an asset that is given to each and every indi- vidual and it does not discrimi- nate in its length and potential for any human being over the other. Allah (SWT) has appointed for each of us a time that we will spend on this earth. Allah (SWT) knows when we will breathe our last and depart from the life of this world. We on the other hand do not know what time we are going to depart from this world. We do not know what time, day, month or even year, we are going to die and end our life in this world. No one can guarantee us, nor can we guarantee them that we will live to see the next minute, let alone the next day or month. The only opportunity that we have is right now. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran, “By Time, Indeed mankind is at loss. Except those who believe (in Islam) and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth and recom- mend one another to patience” (Al-Asr: 1-3). In the aforementioned verses, Allah (SWT) swears by the entity of time and states that mankind is at loss. This means that we are in a battle against time, moreover that we are in a race against time. This is evident because in order for us to be at a loss, there must be an attempt or hope for gain. So at this juncture, we might inquire as to what is it that we can do to overcome this inherent incapac- ity we have against time. Allah (SWT) mentions for us the solu- tion for our race against time in the next verse, wherein he says "Allah is sufficient for us and He is the Best Guardian". Time is an entity that has been granted by Allah (SWT) to all of humanity. All the rich and the poor and everyone in between has been given time. An hour in the life of a CEO is the same length as the hour of lecture that a university student listens to while in class. The hour of a basketball game is the same length as an hour of preschoolers’ playtime at a daycare. Everyone’s time is the same. The only difference is the worth, the value, and the use of it. For example, the CEO will be making grand decisions that might affect the lives of thousands of employees and their households during that hour, while the preschoolers will spend that same hour playing with blocks and sliding down slides on a playground. One university student will spend an hour in a lecture while another student might spend that same hour playing video games. The students have been given equal time and the same clock tower on campus rings its bell at the top of the hour, and both the students can hear it. The “Live in this world as (if you are) a wayfarer or a stranger.” (Bukhari) “By Time, Indeed mankind is at loss. Except those who believe (in Islam) and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth and recommend one another to patience” (Al-Asr: 1-3). that that those who are not at a loss in their race against time are those who believe in Islamic monotheism, who believe in Allah (SWT) as the their lord without any partners, and those who do good deeds, and those who enjoin the truth and enjoin patience. This shows us that the prerequisite for our salvation and our freedom from the Hellfire is belief in the oneness of Allah (SWT) as our Rabb, as our Lord. In addition Allah (SWT) men- tions that we must manifest our belief in him through righteous deeds; through performing our duties which he has obligated upon us (prayer, Fasting, Zakat, Hajj, etc.) It shows us that belief must be put into practice through the works and deeds that we perform. It is not merely lip service but an affirmation of faith through submission to the Islamic Shariah as a whole. At this juncture it is important to bring up the question that, why does Allah (SWT) punish the disbelievers for eternity in Hell- fire in the hereafter, even though their disbelief and evil deeds were only for a duration of sixty or seventy years in their life in this world. And why does Allah (SWT) reward the believers for eternity in Paradise in the hereaf- ter, even though their belief and good deeds were only for dura- tion of sixty or seventy years in their life in this world. A literalist and rationalist might say (may Allah (SWT) protect us) that it is an unfair judgment to punish sixty years of disbelief and evil deeds with an eternity of punish- ment, while rewarding sixty years of belief and good deeds with an eternity of reward.
