ABOUT THE ORGANISERS AND FESTIVAL

Philip Norman (Founding Director) is a

freelance musician based in London

(pnms.co.uk). He conducts Questors Choir,

Harlow Singers, Woodford Symphony

Orchestra and is organist at the Deutsche

Evangelisch-lutherische Kirche St. Marien

mit St. Georg in Central London.

Mike Gahan (Chief Steward) works as a Senior

Software Developer for a leading media and

entertainment company based in West London.

Himself a talented and spirited stage perform-

er, Mike sings with Questors Choir and Sky

Choir, and he has been actively associated with

the London Sangerstevne festivals since 2005.

Christine Didelot, who was Executive Director of the Sangerstevne, died after a short illness just a couple of days

after the 2017 Sangerstevne. Although Christine had worked full time as a marketing manager in Central London,

in her spare time she was a passionate and committed choral singer with a long experience of organisation and

management in the arts. She brought to the Sangerstevne both her love of choral singing and her planning and

project management skills. She will be missed, partly for her impeccable and reliable administration skills, but

mainly for herself.

Originating in Norway, Sangerstevne literally means a 'Congress or Coming Together of Singers'. Such festivals are major events in

Scandinavia, where choirs from all over the country gather for several days to meet old friends, exchange ideas and repertoire, and

sing to each other in a relaxed and non-competitive atmosphere. The concept was brought back to the UK by Philip Norman, who

participated in many Norwegian Sangerstevne festivals whilst working there as an organist and choral conductor. The first London

Sangerstevne was held in May 2004 at St John's Church, Leytonstone and has been running annually ever since across London, in the

past in association with St John's Church Choir and Questors Choir, but now managed independently by the Festival Organisers.

The organisers wish to thank the Parish Church Councils of St Sepulchre-without-Newgate; St Augustine, Archway; St John the

Baptist, Holland Road; St John’s, Leytonstone; and St Bartholomew-the-Less for hosting this year’s concerts.

PROGRAMME DETAILS CORRECT AT TIME OF PRINTING BUT SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

WE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU MAY WISH TO MAKE AN AUDIO OR VIDEO RECORDING OF YOUR OWN CHOIR.

THIS MAY INFRINGE THE COPYRIGHT OF SOME OF THE PIECES BEING PERFORMED.

IF YOU MAKE A RECORDING, PLEASE CONTACT THE COPYRIGHT HOLDERS OR THE PERFORMING

RIGHTS SOCIETY (www.prsformusic.com) TO REGULARISE THE SITUATION.

ONGOING COLLECTION

It is hoped that The London Sangerstevne has a universal

appeal and that it is accessible to as many singers as

possible. To encourage participation, singer fees are kept

as low as possible (£5 this year as opposed to £7 last

year). However, to organise a festival like this demands a

considerable amount of financial underpinning.

If you are able, please contribute to the ongoing

collection so that there is not a loss for 2018 and a

financial foundation for going forward to 2019.

STARBUCKS AND THE VIADUCT

Starbucks coffee shop and The Viaduct Tavern are

opening specially for our use on the Saturday. We

are not hiring them, but are dependent on

exceeding an agreed sales amount in each

establishment. If we don’t, we have to pay a fee.

Please visit both during the festival and buy their

products. If every one of you buys a drink and a packet of

crisps/bun in each, we should be in the clear.

CHRISTINE DIDELOT MEMORIAL COMPOSITION

There are plans to commission a new choral work in memory of Christine. To raise funds for this, some of Christine’s CDs are

on sale on Saturday in St Sepulchre’s church. Also, we are asking people to sponsor individual bars of the composition @

£20 per bar, or just make a donation of any amount. For further information or with other fundraising ideas, please visit:

www.sangerstevne.org/christine or contact Dagmar Gauweiler: [email protected]

SATURDAY 19 MAY MAIN FESTIVAL

St Sepulchre-without-Newgate

This part of the festival is, essentially, one long, rolling concert. The timings are approximate. Please feel free to come and go as you

please (perhaps when choirs are changing over, rather than in the middle of a performance).

EVERYONE who is in the church when the Festival Pieces are performed is invited to participate. If you haven’t learned the SATB

versions with your choir, or don’t have the music with you, unison versions are available at the back of this programme. We will all

Each choir has been allocated a 15 minute

warm-up period, should they want one.

Please keep to this timetable. Overrun

times have been added to allow a little

flexibility but, if each choir takes just a

few minutes extra, the system will break

down.

The real purpose of each slot is just to

warm up the choir’s voices. It’s not really

an opportunity for last minute rehearsing.

A steward will be on hand to help with

enquiries.

The Starbucks Coffee shop will be open

from 12 noon. It’s just across the road

from the church in the Thameslink railway

station.

Apart from being the warm-up location,

the shop will be serving usual Starbucks

products until 8.00 pm.

Throughout the whole of the Saturday

festival, and on until 11.00 pm, The

Viaduct Tavern will be open for additional

refreshments.

Usually, neither Starbucks nor The Viaduct

are open on a Saturday. They are opening

specially for the Sangerstevne.
