Thank you for your prayers and donations. We thank God for you: without the on-going support of so many people, we could do nothing.

A large ‘thank you’ also comes from over 3,200 needy children who had such fun at MWB Summer Camps recently, as well as from the many families you have helped to become self-sufficient. Thank you.

We are all taught that we are part of Christ’s body; that together we are the family of God. The article about a small Bulgarian Church choosing to be part of the Mission’s Operation Christmas Love shows us all that even a small, fearful response can be used by God to help others. Could you ask your Church or fellowship group to support the work of Mission Without Borders? Maybe they would like to be part of Operation Christmas Love or maybe they would like to sponsor a family out of poverty and despair?

For all that you do to further the work of Mission Without Borders, thank you!

Thank You

“ I couldn’t imagine how happy I’d be here. Summer Camp is the most beautiful experience!” exclaimed twelve year-old Romina.

What a contrast to her usual summers spent doing farm-work. Or her daily life in the orphanage where she has lived since she was just 18 months old.

It is because her parents abandoned Romina that she has little experience of family life. That’s why MWB wanted to bring Romina’s dream alive: So she could “feel what it’s like to have a family that really loves me.” We knew that at Summer Camp Romina could forget her sad past as she made new friends.

And Romina made loads of new friends at Camp! What’s more, she says, “I discovered a very important thing – that Jesus Christ is my best friend! I’m so happy the Lord Jesus is my best and true friend.”

During her ten days at Camp, Romina says she “most liked the Bible lessons, especially the one about the tax collector. He took a lot of money from people, but in the end he shared everything. I really enjoyed all the sports, where I ran and jumped. It was lots of fun. I thank God and MWB for giving me the chance to come into Summer Camp, to rest and find out more about God.”

Watch Romina tell how Summer Camp made a difference at: mwbuk.org/summercamps

For the first time in his life Ergys (11) went to a Summer Camp where he went swimming, played games and competitions, did crafts, Bible studies – and accepted Jesus into his heart.

Ergys comes from a family of six, who all share just two small rooms. Ergys sleeps on the floor with his brothers. When not out looking for work, Ergys’ father goes to the rubbish dump to collect scrap metal to sell.

When Ergys grows up, he says “I want to become a footballer and I also want to believe in the Word of God.”

“Since I was little I always wanted to attend Camp and now here I am – so happy! I like the swimming, the gorgeous food, the games, puppets and prayer time. I thank MWB for the privilege of coming to Camp.”

“At the moment we don’t have anyAs winter approaches and temperatures drop, thousands in Eastern Europe fear freezing.

Help victims of the cold, like the Gogoi family, survive by supporting our Winter Fuel appeal.

Lidia does as much as she can to keep her children warm in winter. Her husband Veaceslav continues; “Only when the weather is milder do we let them go outside. I’m afraid of them getting sick, because if our children are unwell we’d be completely finished – we have absolutely no money for doctors, let alone medicines.”

It was through tears last winter that Lidia admitted, “Right now, we don’t have any firewood. The bad weather means that my husband has not been able go to the woods and gather brushwood.” Even if Veaceslav could get out, the wood he manages to collect and carry home on his back does not keep their home warm. Lidia explains that “With brushwood, we only manage to heat the stove slightly. That is why – even in the house – I keep the children bundled up.”

In contrast, Lidia says, if she could afford to buy coal “it would heat our room and we could all stay warmer for so much longer.”

The Gogoi family lives in a partially-built house. It’s situated on top of a windy hill in rural Moldova, one

“Even in the house I keep the children bundled up. They are like cabbages – wearing so many layers of clothes.”

of the poorest countries in Europe. When it rains heavily, or snows, it is impossible to reach the Gogois other than by horse and cart. Although their home has three rooms and a kitchen, the whole family of five lives in just one bedroom alongside the kitchen. None of the rooms are completed, but at least the room they live in gives shelter over their heads.

Veacesalv and Lidia do their utmost to provide for their three children, Leonica (6), Veceslav (3) and Agnesia (1). Veaceslav relies on seasonal farm-work for an income. He gets up early in the morning and works till late in the evenings on farmers’ land – only to earn around £55 a month during summer. In winter, when he can barely find any work at all, he may earn up £17 a month.

The family’s struggle to survive means that the children – even at such a young age – know what poverty feels like on the inside: Every request they make is met with the same response from their parents, “We don’t have the money…” Their main request this winter is to keep warm.

Baby boom!Nearly half our staff members at MWB-UK are pregnant! Both Sim and Naomi are going on maternity leave this autumn. Simin Cullen-Belobrajdic and her husband Adrian are expecting their second child in October.

Naomi and Tom Page’s baby is due just a month later, so Naomi will be taking maternity leave from the beginning of November.

We hope to welcome new temporary members of staff very shortly. They will take over all the record-keeping, finances, sponsorship updates and everything else that keeps MWB-UK functioning.

Do welcome our new staff if you hear a new voice at the end of the phone.

Do pray for safe deliveries of Sim’s and Naomi’s babies. Please pray also for our new staff; that they pick up the work quickly and for a seamless transition of all our activities.

Chickens donated by supporters taking our Loose Change Chicken Challenge are creating a new sense of community and well-being for struggling Bulgarian villagers.

Hens and their eggs are part of our new village-wide initiative at Krupnik, Bulgaria. Last year we set up a community farm to encourage several families to share responsibility for hens and goats, and then share the animals’ produce between them.

It was impossible for Anton and Vesela Antonovi even to buy eggs for food. They

could barely make ends meet, yet today they say that “we have eggs and they are making our basic meals of bread and beans so much more nutritious.”

Yagoda and Yulian Mihaylova, the Antonovi’s neighbours in this extremely poor part of rural Bulgaria, are also benefitting from the hens. “Thanks to these eggs, we have some variety on our table. Now we can offer something really good for our children to eat.”

Neither family has worked for over three years. It is because so many here are trapped in such deeply entrenched poverty that we began a new community work. With 68 Krupnik families now enrolled in our Sponsorship scheme, we are keen to find a way for each family to provide for themselves. Caring for their new hens is now developing a new sense of community in Krupnik. As struggling families work together to produce eggs for themselves, they are also looking out for others. The Antonovis and Mihaylovas regularly give away extra eggs to other families.

Transformed with technical skillsComing from a poor, broken family with an addict father, Mirand had few expectations for his future – until MWB offered him vocational training.

“This course to become an electrician is an open window, and tomorrow it’s going to open new doors for me,” says Mirand hopefully.

What a difference for Mirand – the youngest child of an unemployed drug addict. His father’s problems caused such a strain on the family that when Mirand was still small his parents divorced. Mirand and his two siblings went with to live with their mother, Zamira, though she was unwell from diabetes and asthma.

Shortly afterwards, Zamira passed away. So the three children were

left with their grandparents. Mirand started going to their local

school, but he only got poor grades. In the end, because of the cost, and because Mirand

struggled to complete the 8th form, he dropped

out of school.

Mirand’s circumstances echoed that of many young people in small

Albanian villages. Most hang around with low expectations – they have finished school but have few skills and there are few jobs available.

In this hopeless situation MWB met Mirand. “I will never forget MWB caring for us. We have been without our mother for many years now, but we have been clothed with socks and shirts and given pasta, oil and rice to eat. Thanks to MWB and your generous donors, we never suffered the pangs of hunger. MWB met our needs in every way.

“What’s more, taking this vocational training to become an electrician is a dream come true: I tried to repair an electric plug once, and when I succeeded, I knew I wanted to do more of this. Today I am! I can now repair the main problems caused by electrical black-outs."

Mirand travels from his village by bus every day to attend MWB’s vocational course. He’ll take classes for nine months, including an apprenticeship with an electrics company. He will learn domestic electrical work, as well as how to fix the electrics in cars.

Mirand says, “Now I am learning more and more. Thanks to this training, I, a 17 year-old boy, will be transformed into a ‘builder’ of my own future.

Thank you!”

Buy online at mwbuk.org or phone 020 7940 1370.

From just £50 you can support another young person like Mirand to be a 'builder' of their own future. Give a gift of

vocational training from our presents for the Future catalogue.

Page 12: 18593 mwb autumn 2013 newsletter web

In the beginning, we tackled illiteracy and children missing school; today we have young people from our sponsored families at university. We began helping families through domestic violence; now we support fathers with vocational training to set up their own businesses and take responsibility for their families. Self-sufficiency used to be an impossible dream. Yet in 2011 we helped seven families become totally independent. By 2012 we supported another 11 families off our programmes. Our aim for 2013 is to have 17 more families no longer needing MWB’s help!

This is our vision. And for such a ministry, each day is different. We know every minute is precious and try to have more time ‘in the field’1 than in the office: We may visit our Summer Camp site, or a soup kitchen; distribute some food parcels or meet a local pastor. Then we’ll be back in the office answering emails, writing a report or co-ordinating the next day’s activities.

One of my first and most memorable visits, back in 1991, was to a local association of visually impaired people. What struck me is how you do not need to see – even the faces of your own children – to express pure gratitude to God and to others for being helped. No matter how big or small MWB’s help was, this group was so thankful because, for the first time, they were not left out; they were being treated with respect.

What upsets me most is lost hope. The people we reach, who live in such deep material and spiritual poverty, have lost all hope, motivation and strength to change. Food, clothing, health service, education, jobs are all beyond their reach – they are in need of everything. Children often go to bed without supper, have torn shoes and no school bags. They do not remember their birthday because they have never received a present. It’s easy to be run down by such need – we simply cannot help everyone. So we focus on what we can do.

We find the key is to function like one body with every part compensating, co-operating and giving a hand to another. When someone comes to us for help, or is referred by local churches or government, we start by meeting their basic needs for food, clothes, shoes and also school books. Then we connect them with a local church where they can find food for their souls. As our relationship develops and a family becomes stronger, so we help them to start working for themselves – such as growing their own vegetables or learning a basic trade.

We have complementary, reciprocal relationships with local churches. I remember having lunch with the pastor of Rilindja (Rebirth) church at our new, jointly-run community centre. Across the table were three children – stuffing their little mouths with bread before every spoon of soup, rice and chicken.

Meet MonikaHospitality and dignity amidst poverty is what Monika has seen during her 21 years managing our work in Albania. Sharing the joys and challenges of supporting some of the poorest people in one of Europe’s poorest countries, Monika continues our series ‘A day in the life of…’

1 Visiting people in need, our beneficiaries or programmes. 2 MWB Albania has 12 office and programme staff, with around 100 volunteers, mostly from local churches and community groups.

Page 13: 18593 mwb autumn 2013 newsletter web

The pastor commented, “You know, their next meal won’t be until this time tomorrow, here at Rilindja.”

For our faithful service in Albania, we are respected by local governments. Last year, on the 100th anniversary of Albania’s independence, out of about 30 charities in Durres, MWB was the only one to be awarded for “distinguished service to Durres for assistance to communities and groups in need.”

But this is not about us: We do everything for God’s glory. And we also believe that this recognition belongs to every single donor and partner church, because none of what we accomplish can be carried out alone without all of us working together.

Even though you, our supporters, share what you have with strangers across continents, you give generously, with patience and dedication. You may not realise how big a change your small contribution can bring: Another family becoming self-sufficient, another child going to Camp, another lonely elderly person having a hot meal. Your contribution is precious. We cannot make it without you.

Please pray

for Monika and MWB’s Albania team2

n Living in Albania has a lot of challenges at work and home. Pray for patience, wisdom and encouragement and for the Lord to lead us in everything.

n Pray we do not get disheartened by the difficulties.

n Pray we keep sight of God’s plan for our lives.

n Please pray that God blesses us with more resources so that we can respond to the endless needs we witness daily.

n Pray that more and more lives are touched and won for our Lord Jesus Christ!

Albania facts Government Albania’s first elections in 1991 ended 46 years of xenophobic Communist rule. Political mistrust has since generated a host of parties, increasing separation and social tensions. Recent elections (June 2013) showed growing democratic maturity as the Democratic Party conceded defeat to the Alliance for a European Albania led by Edi Rama of the Socialist Party.

Economy Albania's economy is hampered by a large informal economy and inadequate infrastructure. Unemployment is prevalent. While criminality and suicide rates increase, many flee for better prospects elsewhere.

Quality of life Ranked 70 in the Human Development Index out of 187 countries (UNDP, 2013) around 12.5% of people daily struggle to put adequate food on the table.

How you have helped

Strawberries raised pounds!

MWB thanks Pauline and Bob Dobson (left) for yet another strawberry tea party that raised over £400 for our work with some of Europe's poorest.

What’s more, this is their golden wedding anniversary year. So the Dobsons also donated gifts

celebrating their 50 years of marriage to MWB. Thank you Pauline and Bob!

From Beavers to chickens

The 1st Wetherden and Haughley Beavers raised £40 to go towards our Loose Change Chicken Challenge. Their scout leader saw MWB’s mention in Your Chickens magazine, and as this rural group has a particular interest in chickens, they gladly got on with their Chicken Challenge!

The Beavers made Christmas cards, gift tags and tree decorations out of pine cones. This multi-faith, mixed gender scout group then sold everything at last year’s Christmas light switch-on. Thank you Beavers and supporters for your generous donations!

Be part of Christ’s body: Be part of the family“Operation Christmas Love is love in action,” said Elka gratefully, an elderly widow living alone in southern Bulgaria. She was one of the first to receive an Operation Christmas Love (OCL) box handed out by members of a local church – they had caught the OCL vision.

It was last October when an elder of the Evangelical Church in Assenovgrad first heard of Operation Christmas Love (OCL). Seeking out our Bulgaria manager, Sarkis, he learned more about our OCL initiative, and how his church could become involved.

Members of this church have a heart to serve the Lord, but to become a partner with MWB in

distributing our OCL boxes is not a task to be taken lightly. Sarkis explained that to justify costs for all the OCL food items, the church needed to be sure that they could distribute at least 100 OCL boxes to people in need in Assenovgrad.

Now Assenovgrad is quite a big town, about the same size as Tunbridge Wells. But its Evangelical Church is small with only 55, mostly retired, members. They prayed a lot about OCL, and knew it was right – they really wanted to take the opportunity OCL was giving them to share God’s love with those in need and offer the Good News of Christ’s salvation. But still, they were uncertain.

Putting fears aside, this small congregation got on with packing their OCL boxes. Then they went out looking for lonely widows or widowers, single mothers, the handicapped and any others forgotten by society. And they were shocked – at how many people they found in real need.

The Evangelical Church volunteers saw many tear-filled eyes and heard many words of gratefulness as Could your church give the gift

they gave out the OCL boxes. Widow Elka said that OCL is “love that reflects the love of our wonderful Saviour to all. I’m very thankful to the Lord for putting it in the hearts of MWB worldwide to give this parcel of hope to hundreds of us living in deadlock."

The Assenovgrad Evangelical Church admits that giving out OCL boxes woke them up to the needs of others. But more than that, it reminded them how much every believer, every church is part of the body of Christ in the world.
