Kura Tuatahi o Whakatu greetings to friends andfamily of Nelson Central School.

Play fightingSome sources support the notion of playfighting(www.aphrodite womenshealth.com/news/20070220003410_heal th_news.shtml) oftenextolling its virtues (www.springerlink.com/content/r82828jw4k74150h). Others ask us to learn how todistinguish between play fighting and aggression so thatwe dont deny children the benefits of playfighting(www.education.com/reference/article/Ref_Distinguishing). Some researchers make playfightingseem like a must have activity. However most of themdont have to deal with the fallout when play fighting goesbelly up. Sometimes what starts out as a bit of funquickly becomes bullying with its tears, feelings of hurtand broken relationships. Our position is that play fightingought not to occur at school and that if you think its amust have activity you might like to host one at yourplace! We simply dont have the resources to monitor theactivity to ensure its worthy objectives are achieved.

AbsencesIf you intend that your children will be absent for 20consecutive days or more but will be returning to schoolafter the absence, can you please put that in writing and

ensure it is received in the school office. When a child hasbeen absent for 20 consecutive days we are required toremove them from the school roll and start a process tofind out where the child is and ensure they are attendingschool. If we dont receive a note from you and if the childreturns to school, this is treated as a new enrolment inwhich case a whole new round of frustrating, form fillinghas to be completed. That can be avoided if you give us aletter to confirm your intentions before leaving school.

Congratulations to the Nelson Representative A Miniball team for

winning the Nelson Marlborough Tournament held inBlenheim at the weekend. The team won all lead up gamesby large margins and won the final by 12 points. Well done Kyle C., Ben W., Ben R., Max H., Lachie M., Toby B.Congratulations and thanks also to the coaches for a finejob preparing the team.

Cycles and scootersWe seem to be fighting a losing battle in our efforts toprotect cycles and scooters. At the weekend a scooter wasleft in the bike cage and some-one saw two youths gainaccess to the cage by throwing a jacket over the barbedwire and removed a scooter. Had the police been alerted

the thieves would have been long gone by the time theygot here. Im not sure how effective children having theirown chains and locks would be but you may wish toconsider it.
