that Doug Allen received a pen-cil sketch of a bobcat from Frank Schoonover as a gift. He writes: “FES said [Philip R.] Goodwin [fellow Howard Pyle student] drew it to help out with the contorted position of the cat - FES said he wanted it to ‘be right’.” With Goodwin’s compositional help, Schoonover completed ‘The Lynx’ on March 12, 1906. It was the first paint-ing he completed after moving into his new studio at 1616 North Rodney Street on March 8th. (correspon-dence, diaries and day books)

Commentary: Schoonover’s dramatic ‘worm’s eye view’, captures the intensity of the struggle between the bloodied and bruised White Fang and Gray Beaver. The day books indi-cate that this work was painted for a composition class. See #269sa for the preliminary sketch and #269sb for the more complete sketch.

Commentary: Faced with a deadline from Outing Magazine, Schoonover found himself without enough time to finish this painting. He solicited the expertise of N.C.
