Seventh Sunday of Easter From the Pastor’s Deskw cond
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, A while back, taking the A train up to Fort Trion park, I found myself in one of my favorite places in the City, the Cloisters Museum. For those of us with a fondness for medieval art and architecture, this is the place in the United States to go, since the building itself is composed of parts of churches, monasteries and other buildings of significant importance from 12th and 13th Century Spain and France. There are times I have spent a day within those walls, looking at the different exhibits, even though most all have been there since before I was born, and I have viewed them before. Among my favorites is the Rosary Bead. Carved from a single piece of wood, this object of devotion, which is about the size of a trailer hitch, smaller than a pool ball, was carried by someone in the early 1500’s, as a way to center their prayers. From the outside this ball looks like a pretty keepsake, carved with intricate lacework all around, and the Latin words Attendite videte si est dolor sicvt mevs (Attend and see if there exists pain to such an extent as my pain) and Levemvs corda nostr cvm manibvs ad Dominvm in caelos (Let us lift up our hearts with hands to the Lord in the heavens). Inside the bead are other inscriptions, matching the carvings that we encounter, two small doors depict Adam, Eve and the Serpent, around the tree. As these doors are opened, we see the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Presentation in the Temple, the visitation of the Magi, and the Flight into Egypt. The lower half of the bead contains the Crucifixion and events leading up to it, including the agony in the garden and Peter cutting off the ear of the chief priest’s slave. So much inside one small object, it can be overwhelming to look at it, briefly trying to take it in, as we move onto the next object, and the next. But that is why we take our time with it, viewing it a portion at a time, much in the way others have for centuries, unfolding it piece by piece, much like our Faith itself. The person who originally owned this devotional object would have carried it with them, opening it in the comfort of their home, perhaps in a corner of their room, or in places that they stayed as they travelled, whether on pilgrimage or business. They would have had years to meditate upon the Biblical scenes depicted, exposing themselves to the movement of the Holy Spirit in their day to day devotions. We are also called to these times of devotion, awaiting the celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit next Sunday at Pentecost, the Church gives us matter to bring to prayer. Whether it is Sacred Scripture itself, as we hear it proclaimed at Mass, read privately from our Bibles, or exposed in Sacred art, in paintings and sculpture, and even in music. These Holy Days that the Church calls us to worship, to focus on or even just to remember as we go about our days, like that Rosary Bead, often expose us to the fullness of the Faith. Having just celebrated the Ascension of Jesus, which occurred after His Death and Resurrection, the following day was the Visitation of the Blessed Mother, as she made her way, just after learning she was pregnant with Jesus, to see her cousin Elizabeth, who was pregnant with John the Baptist. Our calendar is a blend of the Incarnation, the Passion and the Resurrection of Christ, as we are called to recognize the humanity of Jesus side by side with His Divinity. As Catholics, we are blessed with the fullness of Revelation, being able to experience the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in Eucharist, His Sacramental presence in the Church at worship, the Revelation of the Father in the words of Christ, in the New Testament which was handed down to us by those whom Christ established our Church on. We have the blessings of 2000 years of art, depicting these stories and the Faith behind them, so that both learned and unread could come to know Christ. Nowhere else do we encounter Christ in such fullness, and yet sometimes we go about our day to day lives, not recognizing that it is He who is walking alongside of us, calling us to speak with Him. Perhaps we all need a Rosary Bead to remind us, to bring us out of our own day to day, and reveal to us how much Jesus has, and does give to us. Pax, Fr. Henry
June 2nd, 2019 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time IN BETWEEN In between: we all find ourselves there from time to time—sometimes uncomfortably. Like in between money coming in and money going out, earning income and paying bills. In between custom-er and manager, diner and chef: any honest server trying to serve both. In between theory and practice, ideal and reality: everyone from par-ents to pastors. Ask the kids—or parishioners! This Sunday, in between Ascension and Pentecost, reminds us we’re in between Jesus’ departure and glorious return—sometimes uncomfortably. Though Jesus promis-es in Revelation, “I am coming soon,” Acts shows Stephen tragically called home first. But Pope Francis urges us not to become “sourpusses,” as if living Gospel love is impossible in between. To-day’s Gospel shows Jesus praying for those about to betray, deny, and desert him, but also praying “for those who will believe in me through their word.” Us! “So that they”—we—“may all be one.” Copyright © J. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Saint Statues in Church
Are in desperate need of restoration due to years of water damage due to a roof in need of total repair. Well Father Henry has fully repaired the Church roof and it is
Time during our Centennial Year to begin to repair our beloved Saints. They will be done locally by an experienced artist who has recently redone the Mastic Statues after the fire
and they are spectacular.
What is the problem? Funds! We do not have any for the $2,500. to $3,500.it will cost to strip them, base coat, paint and seal each of our statues.
Please walk over to St. Ann with the child Mary, St. Anthony, Our Lady of Mount Carmel , etc. the damage caused the paint to chip away & crack.
If you can help please send your tax deductible donation to the Office marked Statue Restoration. We would all be proud & very grateful to start.
The Statues were refinished for our 25/75 Anniversary as Father Bob had arranged. The Statues are in the same finish including the Divine Mercy in the vestibule so to match our Angels at the doors for a uniform look. We have taken many pictures of all areas of each statue and acquired quotes before deciding on the
company we have chosen.
