We have been glacl to give our al l for High-land Park, as i t has been glad to do for us. Here has been laidthe foundation, the stepping stone, of the future. N{ay High-land Park, with i ts f ine faculty and ofi icials, l ive forever toserve to this end! Here wil l always remain our hearts, for we,l ike Ulysses, are a part of al l we have met!

LLBT\s thc f irst whist le blew for the opening of the football sea-

-,,n, the Highlancler grid team cleparted for two weeks of

-trcrluous work at Camp Kiwanis.

' [ ' ]re prospects at the opening of the season were not verypr, 'nrising, as there were many posit ions to bc f i l led and thec,,:rchcs hacl much hard work to do in developing capable mell: , ' r thcse jobs. From a very small nucleus of returning letter-:rrcn i t was necessary to make a squacl capable of reprcsentingI I ishland Park.

' l 'hc l ine was macle up of exceptionally green material, andrirc hackfield showed a definite lack of prospects, making it"t , ,rrgh sledding" for the coaches. There were many men whoi:.r, i never before been out for football , which fact, coupleds ith a new distr ict and strange teams, made the season one ofi irc nrost di l f icult in the history of our school.

Rcgardless of these handicaps, however, NIr. Trigg, head

Page 76: 1933 yearbook

coach, ancl Mr, Hume, assistant head coach, hacl a well-trainedtearn bn the f ield for the opening game.

The Highlanders had a very pleasant t imc at Camp Kiwanis.

The boys were fed the best of food by thc mother of the foot-ball squad, NIrs. Garver. T'he players showed marked im-provement from the very f irst game, duc to the fact that a lackof expericnce was thc only obstacle to hinder them fromrnarching to the top. ' fhe squad made a very poor start, butcoached by the untir ing elTorts of our two f inc coaches, thcboys soon rcached their str ide and stayed thcre.

' fhe team was a perfect example of frne coaching ancishowed thc t rue value of the Notre l )ame shi f t .

This shi f t , due to the perfect ion that has been reached inplaying it in Highland Park, has attracterl rnuch attcntion.

-\ l though many other teams employ a shift , our team is theonly one in this section that uscs the true Notre Damc shift as

taught by the late Knute Rockne.

Highland Parkts grid team met an invading Royce City team with abadly crippled squad as a result of the battering received the weekbefore at Sherman. -fhe main change in this ganle was the switchingof Johnny Blaine, regular guard, to the fullback position, replacingMorrison who was absent with a severe head injury. The Highland-ers, however, broke through with a crushing defeat over the lightRoyce City eleven, registering their initial win but stil l failed to lookimpressive. A 7 5-yard gallop by Loring was the longest touchdown ofthe day, while Shapard, Iiulghum, Startzell, Hoffman and Blaine alscrmade touchdowns.

A well-balanced Denton High School eleven invaded HighlandPark to defeat Coach Charlie Triggts Highlanders 2 r to 20, in a gamcthat proved to be a thriller until the final whistle. Highland Parkquickly made a touchdown in the first marker, but Denton chalked uptwo counters in the first two quarters to lead r+ to 7 at the half. TheBroncs came back to chalk up another counter in the early minutes ofthe third period. A fumble resulted in Highland Parkts second score

hand broken during the first quarter of play and this was a great blowto the Highlander squad. However, the players from Hi Park soonshowed that they were a far superior team, their lower score only indi-cating bad breaks due both to the weather and in plays on the field.

Led by Bob Startzell, the Highlanders were an easy victor overSulphur Springs. The Highlanders displayed surprising offensivestrength and brill iant defensive tactics that held a well-balanced Sul-phur Springs eleven at bay. This made the Highlander's third victoryof the season. The team played the best game of the season in de-feating the \\Ii ldcats, compiling a total of twelve first downs as com-pared with four for the Wildcats. Shapard and \\tiley were the starsfor the Hiehlander eleven.

Surging across the goal twice in the early minutes of the game toregister a commanding lead that withstood the threats of a persistentinvader, the Hi Park eleven defeated the Gainesville Leopards zoto r3. The game was wel l played throughout and there were frequentsubstitutes, due to the savage way the two teams followed the ball.

This game showed that the Highlanders had made fine progress sincetheir early season reverses. The Highlanders made two touchdownsin the first quarter, Floffman and Startzell putting over the counters. In the second part, the invaders, with their backs to the wall, gallopedto make two touchdowns in the final quarter-score I4 to I3, Hi Park. The Highlanders scored again in the final quarter when the invaderslaunched a passing attack, only to have Stebbins intercept the heaveand carry the ball to the eleven-yard line. Morrison then carried theball on for the touchdown. Hoffman, Startzell, Stebbins and Morrisonrvere the principal stars of the game for the Highlanders.

\\' inding up their schedule in District 6 with three victories and twol, rsses, the Highland Park Highlanders came through Thanksgivingwith an r 8 to 7 victory over the l)enison ]'ellow Jackets. Highlandl)ark got the jump on their rivals at the start of the game, which wasplayed before a large crowd at Highland field, scoring two touchdownsin the first period. The Yellow Jackets failed to score until the thirdperiod when Lowe broke through his own right guard and raced

.15 vards for a touchdown. Startze-ll and Morrison were the offensivestars for Highland Park, while Whitley and Dent showed up well onthe defensive.

fought, and revealed some teamrryork which made it very evident that they wereplaying the best ball of the season. The game ended with the score of. z4-zo infavor of Hi Park. Delafield was high-point man with r r points.

Our boys had a very hard assignment in this tournament because they had toplay three games to get to the finals, whereas the other teams played only two.

The next game was with Arlington, a team which was cracked up to bepretty good, and they were pretty cocky over playing the Highlanders. Againshowing beautiful basketball, Hi Park downed the enemy by the tune of. z8-zo.Delafield still held the high-point honors with 7 points.

Now, the exciting part of the tournament had just begun. Hi Park was toplay the Great Denton Broncs, the next morning in the senior-finals. Everyonebut the Highlanders seemed to think it would be just "abreeze" for Denton.

The game opened up with the tall, lanky boys of Denton having a two or thr€epoint margin over the Highlanders. Our boys played with wonderful teamworkand outstanding defensive play throughout the entire game, which was con-sidered the most exciting and probably the hardest fought game of the tourna-ment. At the end of the game four regulars were out on account of fouls. Inthe last two minutes Haughton was sent in and rung up four points for the"Blue and Gold," but the final score was 28-27 in Denton's favor.

With the outstanding ofiensive work of Delafield, the defensive play of Lee,combined with great teamwork of King, Richardson, Loring and Gray, thetournament was a great ending to a slow season.

At the Basketball Banquet, Delafield and Lee were awarded trophies for beingthe most yaluable players to the team.

The Bag Piper lounded this year, was the first paper ever to be sponsored b1'

have the judgment to interpret them proper ly.

Pr int ing is an ort . . . not o science. l f you could make

an author, or a painter, wi th a book of instruct ions

can' t . . . and for the sdme redsons.

This is our redson for laying such stress on brainsin the product ion of pr int ing. Any one who cares

to can dupl icate our equipment. In the f inal rzsul t ,

however, men count more than mochines . . . dnd
