UNEXPECTED CHANGES

• Coming out of the 1950s the people of Britain never thought that life would change as much as it did. The dreary days of rations had been and gone but life was still much the same old routine.

• But the brighter days of the 60s lay just around the corner…

1960s DIY • At the end of the 1950s most households were

decorated in dark wood furniture, grandfather clocks and carpets or tiles in the same plain colours.

• However, when the 1960s arrived with an air of change about them, modern families decided that it was time for a revamp.

• Delicately carved doors were boarded up and painted; Fireplaces were boxed in and new, lightweight furniture replaced the usual, dull colours with dazzlingly bright ones.

The film industry experimented in the 60’s. Life was so easy going

and free, that anyone would watch anything. Colour was used

to show how modern the film was, However some films still stayed in black and white. Audrey Hepburn and Doris Day were the big well know actresses of their day (and

even today).

The British Mod style emerged from a desire among British youth to break away from the stiffness of the 50’s and uncouth look of the teddy-boys, and to emulate the more stylish Italian, French and, latterly, American fashions.

The original and enduring mod style is a slim-fitting dark coloured suit, worn with a lighter coloured shirt and thin, dark tie, along with a pair of dark shoes.

Mods usually prefer a two-tonic coloured suit, made of a light material and fronted by three buttons (with the bottom button being left undone).

Vibrantly expressed by The Who with their symbolic use of arrows, Union Jack jackets and RAF target emblems.

Rockers

The Rockers were another teenage subculture of the '60s, who rivalled the Mods.

Unlike the bright, fun and classy look of Mods, Rockers preferred to be more scruffy and rebellious.

They wore heavy biker boots or brothel creepers and accessorised with studs and chains.Rockers’ fashion was

heavily influenced by bygone decades
