NINETEEN SIXTY - is an election year. Just one hundred years ago the newly'organized Republican Party nominated an Illinois lawyer named Abraham Lincoln as its candidate. A few months later he was elected. W ithin days South Carolina seceded from the Union. The nation was rapidly striding into a war destined to be more cruel and harsh than any previous war.
We have chosen the Civil War for the theme of the 1960 Petrean. Historians have called the years of the Civil War our country’s “teen-age years.” The war marked the transition of America from her birth and early years to her present maturity. Our years at St. Peter’s Prep were likewise a period of transition from boyhood to the threshold of manhood.
Recruits to fight in the armies of the North and South were found among the nation’s young.' Little did the farm boy who proudly wrote his name or made his mark on the enlistment form dream of the gruelling hardships he would face. He fancied himself a daring cavalryman in shining boots mounted on a gallant steed. A few months later the same boy found him self cold, hungry, slogging through mud Up to his knees, always face to face with death. Rut he endured the battles, the bloodshed, and the disappointments,
and at the war’s end he was no longer a boy. When we first came to the Prep we were timid, shy,
clumsy freshmen. We entered upon a totally new world. Our afternoons were taken up either by working on an activity or practicing for a sport. After supper we had to settle down to homework and preparation for next day’s classes. There were many times when we were faced with difficulties and obstacles, and it would have been a relief to turn our backs on them; but we didn’t. Forgan et haec olim meminisse juvabit. Now we are sent on our way again, no longer boys, but young men.
America entered upon the Civil war a young, divided country, a child among the great nations. She emerged from it less carefree, but far wiser, and hopeful for the future. We entered the Prep, and from her received an education, an example, and a memorable experience. These effects have as many definitions as there are seniors. Most important of all the Prep has shown us our Maker in a brighter and clearer light. We walk onward, glancing back to these treasured memories, anxiously looking ahead to life and later its divine reward.
