DEDICATION Trust in our judgment ... and we gamed a

deeper sense of responsibility A sense of humor ... and we enjoyed learning Interest in our accomplishments . .. and we

became more than just students Faith in our generation . . . and we came to

believe in ourselves For these qualities which are a part of us now, for the guidance that helped prepare us for college and adulthood, and for the inspiration that made us aware of new abilities in ourselves, the Senior Class of 1965 respectfully dedicates THE PEER to Mr. R. Ben Turner.

Administration

and

School Board

With concern and understanding Mr. Hurt, Mr. King, and the School Board make major decisions regarding school policy. The office staff helps both students and faculty by efficiently taking care of the secretarial and miscellaneous duties. The guidance office is also concerned with the student's well-being. The three guidance counselors try to keep the entire student body interested in obtaining as much education as possible.

Mr. Ben F . Hurt , Principal; Mr. JulianN. King, Assistant Principal.

THE SCHOOL BOARD: Left to right: Dr. W.E. Moody; Mr. Comer Smith; Dr. Lawrence R. Quarles; Mr. Walter B. Salley, Chairman of the Board; Mr. P aul H. Cale, Division Superintendent; Mr. Thomas H. Jenkins ; Mr. Roger H. Rhinehart, Jr. ; Mr. Leslie H. Walton, Assistant Superintendent.

Mr. Williams is our capable head custodian.

Warren Henry and Harold Childress are quiet but efficient members of the janitorial staff.

Cafeteria With regard for the student's needs and wishes the cafeteria staff, constantly striving for improvement, daily prepares hot meals for the students and faculty.

22

Mrs. Pansy Buck, Mrs. Ada Harper, and Mrs. Mary Harlan are busy preparing the food for school unches.

Mrs. Dorothy Gentry and Mrs. Ella Crawford make a last minute check before the lunch hour begins.

Mr. Canody washes dishes for the next lunch shift.

Transportation

The buses leave after another hectic day of school.

Ellis DeMasters is one of our many conscientious bus drivers.

Students practice leaving the bus by the emergency door.

Student Helpers Fully aware of their responsibility for the students' safety, the bus drivers and mechanics must constantly meet diverse driving and mechanical hazards.

During their free periods industrious students help the guidance counselors and run errands for the office staff.

Mike Stanton delivers absentee lists everyday during 2nd period.

Donna Cannon files and files and ...

Mr. Hurt sends Ward Barnes on another errand.

Margie Kidd and Brenda Sprouse keep busy with typing for the guidance counselors .

Albemarle's First Exchange Student

t

Silvia enjoys Charlottesville's snow!

Page 87: 1965 Peer

The Senior Class presents Silvia with her class ring.

\. Our first foreign exchange student comes from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Silvia Maria Bruno is tall and fair haired, has blue-green eyes and a radiant smile. Her tastes seem very American; she likes riding and water skiing, enjoys rugby and polo, is fond of anything blue, and likes Italian food. She is delighted with our school dances, which are uncommon in Buenos Aires.

Silvia's father , a textile engineer, now works in Peru; her mother has a gift shop; and her younger sister Irene and brother Jmge are both in school. The family lives in a Buenos Aires suburb during the winter and in Peru during the summer. Through the urging of her father and a cousin, who had been an exchange student, Silvia became interested in joining the exchange program.

Silvia prefers large cities and plans after taking sociology in college to become a social worker. But just now she wants to travel and get the chance of meeting different peoples. Silvia is poised and charming, and sometimes out spoken. She has a good sense of humor and a warm personality. Argentina could not have sent us a better representative.

The J.V. squad, led by Earl Burton and Barry Dofflemyer, completed their season undefeated. Twice the Patriots squeezed by Buena Vista, 7-6, and twice they defeated R.E. Lee of Staunton by one touchdown. There's great hope for next year's Varsity.

After a roaring start in which the first four Valley teams fell to the Patriots, troubles developed which were aggravated by the unexpected loss of Coach Null in mid-season. Mr. Rush stepped in to take the reins, but the Patriots seemed jinxed in District play losing by one or two points a succession of crucial encounters; they fell from first place at Christmas to fifth at the end of the regular season. The Patriots fared better in non-district play, winning all their games after the heart-breaking, triple overtime defeat by Handley in the early part of the season. The Patriots played inconsistent ball, rampaging through one quarter only to fall in the next; but by tournament time, despite a weakening of the team by illness, the Patriots shocked everyone with an upset of Harrisonburg on the opening night of the tournament. The next night the Patriots fell to Lee, the District leaders, in an all out effort to defend their title. The following night the Patriots closed the season with a win over Buena Vista leaving the overall record at a respectable 12-9 .
