Held in the York YMCA Pool. Originally the York YMCA had bid to host the 1971 National Championship Meet however, when no host was forthcoming they agreed to take this 1970 meet. The meet director was glad that they did because they would have missed the wonderful group of people who were involved in this Fourth Women’s National YMCA Swimming and Diving Championship Meet. There were 411 participants, representing 68 YMCA’s from 18 States together with assorted parents, chaperones, and coaches that swelled the total number in York to at least one thousand. Special Note: Reflections and thoughts from the York YMCA Director of Physical Education John deBarbadillo:
“Bouncy, pert, glowing girls in their multi-colored outfits. Girls, as serious as any athlete can be when they stood upon the blocks. The concerned intensity of the coaches, both male and female! Girls, sobbing emotionally when they won and event of exceeded their best times. Girls, sobbing alone in a corners of the pool, disappointed with a poor showing. Girls, just sobbing. Saturday evening’s impressive opening Ceremony…with all the pool lights out except the end spot light; the girls standing around the perimeter of the pool, the Officials at the starting end. The colors of the suits and uniforms reflecting into the water. The soft voices of the girls as they sang spontaneously the music of the Star Spangles Banner. Reverend Gordon Folkemer’s poignant prayer. The simultaneous accolade of the audience as they rose en-masses to honor the fantastic performance of Sheri Bush in the 1650 Yard Freestyle event. The rising, feverish crescendo of the audience, catching the infectious enthusiasm of the Montclair girls, as they became aware that their team was on the way to winning the team title…and the near hysteria which prevailed when their 400 Yard Freestyle Relay finished first to clinch that Forth National Team Title. This is the reason why we are so very happy to have had the privilege of hosting this 1970 Meet.”
