Scope & content
This collection consists of the papers of Sandra G. Harding, Distinguished ResearchProfessor of Education and Gender studies at the University of California, Los Angelesfrom approximately 1971 to 2016. The collection documents Harding’s academic careerand research interests of feminist theory and the philosophy of science. Topics includefeminist theory, science and feminism, philosophy of science, and epistemology. Thecollection is composed of biographical materials, correspondence, publications, publicationand royalty records, unpublished drafts, conference papers and flyers, and subject filesconcerning anti-intellectualism and push back from traditionalist scholars.
Series I, Biographical, 1977-2014, documents Harding’s academic career includingpromotions, appointments, tenure, retirement and Signs editorship. Biographical/Historical note
Sandra G. Harding (1935-), Distinguished Research Professor at the University ofCalifornia, Los Angeles, is a scholar of feminist and postcolonial theory, philosophy andscience, and epistemology.
Harding earned her PhD in Philosophy from New York University and graduated with a B.A.from Douglass College of Rutgers University. She taught at the University of California, LosAngeles from 1992-2014 and served as the Director of the Center for the Study of Womenat UCLA from 1996-2000. Previously, Harding taught in the philosophy department at theUniversity of Delaware from 1976-1996 and was the Director of Women’s Studies from1985-1991 and 1992-1993. She served as the Co-Editor of Signs: Journal of Women inCulture and Society from 2000-2005.
In 1990, the Easter Division of the Society for Women in Philosophy honored Harding asWomen Philosopher of the Year. In 2009 she received the American Education ResearchAssociation (AERA) award for Distinguished Contributions to Gender Equity in EducationResearch. Harding was awarded the John Desmond Bernal Prize by the Society for theSocial Studies of Science (4S) in 2013.
