1973 Winnebago Chieftain Motorhome in HO Scale

The late 1960’s and early 1970’s saw the introduction of the iconic motorhome shape which was popular all over North

America for that family vacation and adventure.

This HO kit includes a full interior packed with details and a 12V DC LED lighting strip to help you show off all the details.

The awning can be modeled either extended or in stowed position. Two lawn chair mini kits are also included to put

around your campfire or on the roof to help you relax while on zombie patrol!

Supplied Kit Components:

• 8 sheets of laser cut and engraved stabilized Resin Impregnated Board (RIB)

• 1 sheet of laser cut basswood

• 1 sheet of laser cut clear window glazing

• 2 pieces of styrene channel

• 2 pieces of styrene strip

• 1 piece of styrene ½ round strip

• 1 piece of styrene round rod

• 1 color graphics sheets

• LED strip light

• LED wire leads

• 3D printed parts on carrier (some parts are very small and may fall off the carrier so take caution not to lose

anything when you open the 3D parts box)

Suggested Tools and Supplies:

• X-Acto type knife with fresh blades (#11 style is recommended)

• Tweezers

• Fine sandpaper (400+ Grit) and/or nail file

• Masking tape or clear adhesive tape

• Probond, Elmers white glue or Scotch Quick-Dry Adhesive (I like the Scotch adhesive as it dries with little residue

and has a great fine applicator tip)

• CA glue for immediate bond of small, hard to place parts

• Acrylic or enamel paint

We hope you enjoy making this kit as much as we did providing it to you. If you have any questions, please contact us at

[email protected].

The following instructions and photos will provide the basics for assembling this detailed kit. We have tried to make the

steps as straight forward as possible, but please note that you might want to change the order of assembly to suite your

own technique and modifications that you might make along the way. As usual it is best to familiarize yourself with all

the parts and instructions before you start on this craftsman level kit.

NOTE: If you would like to view these instructions in full colour,

please feel free to download a full colour copy at

and click on the link for www.interactionhobbies.com

1 As shown, your kit comes with sheets of RIB material

along with basswood, plastic and paper components.

As well, there are some 3D printed parts. These parts

are very delicate so take care when handling them.

They are shipped with the support pins still attached.

These are required as part of the printing process.

Care must be taken to carefully remove the parts from

the carrier with an x-acto blade or small nippers. I

usually chip away at them one support at a time.

I like to paint the parts while still in the carrier. Some

parts may need to be painted on the backside as well.

Some touch up will be required after assembly, but this

is a good start.

Painting the 3D parts is easier while still on the supports.

I stick the parts and carrier on some double-sided tape

and to a popsicle stick or scrap piece of wood.

3D printed parts removal with an x-acto blade.

GO SLOW, ONE PIN AT A TIME!

It is easier to paint and detail the covers and doors on

the sides 1 & 3 of the vehicle by cutting them free and

painting them separately.

Glue side panel 1 over side panel 2, aligning them with

the wheel wells as there are differences with the back

edges of each panel. Glue the removed detail panels

back in place.

Glue side panel 3 over 4 again aligning the wheel wells.

Glue in any removed detail panels.

Glue interior cabinet panels in place.

Glue countertop 9 in place as shown.

Paint the oven front and fridge engravings. Glue oven

glazing 10A to the inside of the oven opening on panel

10. Glue panel wall 10 in place. Paint the fridge vents

silver and the fridge doors in your favorite enamel

colors of the era. Avacado green or muted orange were

popular.

Glue 11 and 12 together and paint the sink area silver.

Paint the countertop 13 and glue over the sink assembly.

Also paint the stove your favorite enameled color. The

burner disk would be silver and then highlite the grills in

black.

Glue in the countertop assembly to the slots in the side

wall. You can add a small bit of wire for a faucet if

desired.

Paint the overhead cabinets 15 and glue to 14. Glue the

assembly to the interior sidewall as shown. The upper

face should be flush to the top of the sidewall assembly.

Don’t forget the oven door handle 16. Glue it in place

just above the oven door. This detail seems like a lot of

work, but will look amazing when viewed from the

outside through the windows.

You can also add a bit of styrene scrap fo a faucet since

you have gone this far!!

Glue the bathroom walls 17 and 18 to the interior

sidewall. Glue wall 19 to match slots on 17 and 18.

If you are up to the challenge, you can cut the bifold

doors out of 19 and glue them in the open position as

above. Then you can add some shelves to the inside of

the closet.

Paint the dash panel 39 and dash 40 as appropriate.

Beige or dark brown was the color of the time,

especially the dark brown which could be used for

frying eggs on a hot Arizona day.

Cut and glue the supplied paper instrument graphics to

the bottom of the dash covering the instrument holes.

You could also use some scrap glazing between the panel

and the graphics to represent the instrument glass.

Glue dash panel 39 in place in the associated angled

slot. Glue steering wheel doubler 39A over steering

wheel 39B and glue in place.

Glue in dash 40 as shown.

Mark where the LED strip will go so that it does not

interfere with the interior components of the vehicle.

Stick the LED strip to bottom of the roof with the

attached self-adhesive strip. Reinforce by gluing along

the edges of the strip.

Solder 2 wire leads to the + and – LED pads and route

the wires down and through the left rear wheel well.

Connect the wired assembly to a 12V DC power source

to test. Do not use more than 12V DC as you could over

heat the LED’s and cause a fire.

You may need to trim a bit of the upper lip of the

cabinet wall to fit the wiring. Once you are happy that

everything fits, glue the roof panel in place. Start at the

front and fit the taper to the top of the windshield

assembly. Slowly work aft to make sure everything

stays square and tight.

Paint upper grill 93 silver. Then shape the grill as shown

to match the front of the hood assembly. Take care to

not damage the very fine grill fins.

Do the same with the lower grill 94.

Glue the grills in place centered on the vehicle and grill

openings. Paint grill trim 93A and 94A silver and glue
