MARY S. COLEMAN

Thoughtful and reflective, persuasive and learned jurist, Chief Justice Mary Coleman of the Michigan Supreme Court was born in Forney, Texas. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland in 1935 and completed the requirements for her Juris Doctor degree at George Washington University in 1939.

Chief Justice Coleman took office in January, 1973, and was first elected Chief Justice on January 9, 1979. She was once again elected to the Michigan Supreme Court in January, 1981, and was re-elected Chief Justice on January 6, 1981.

No "ivory tower judge," Chief Justice Coleman has served the bar with dis­ tinction and extraordinary dedication. She serves as Deputy Chairman of the prestigious Conference of Chief Justices of the United States and is a highly respected member of the National Association of Women Judges. Formerly, she was a member of the National Commission for the International Women's Year, a member of the Committee on State Financing of Courts for the State of Michigan, and President of the Michigan Probate and Juvenile Court Judges Association.

Often on the cutting edge of judicial reform, Chief Justice Coleman served as a member of the Supreme Court Committee to draft the Michigan Juvenile Court Rules of Procedure which were adopted in 1969. She also served as a member of the State Bar Committee to revise the Criminal Code of Michigan which is now under the consideration of the Legislature.

An inspired administrator, Chief Justice Coleman is admired for her thorough preparation and scholarly decisions; in particular, Doe v. Mitchell, involving the termination of parental rights; Wayne County Prosecutor v. Recorder's Court Judge, regarding the constitutionality of the State felony fire arms statute; Diziel v. Disco Laboratories, Inc., probing the intricacies of Work­ man's Compensation cases dealing with mental injuries; and Serafin v. Serafin concerning Lord Mansfield's Rule.

A dedicated and articulate citizen, Chief Justice Coleman is a trustee of Albion College. Moreover, in recognition of her spirited advocacy of the rights of children, she serves as a member of the Advisory Committee on Children's Programs for the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation. Chief Justice Coleman has received honorary doctor of law degrees from Alma College, Olivet College, Eastern Michigan University, Western Michigan University, Detroit College of Law, Adrian College, University of Maryland, Saginaw Valley State College and Albion College as well as a doctor of humanities degree from Nazareth College.

ALFONSE M. D' AMATO

Legislator and dedicated public servant, Alphonse M. D'Amato, United States Senator for the State of New York, is the first American of Italian descent to serve in that capacity.

Born in Brooklyn on August 1, 193 7, Senator D' Amato was raised in Island Park, Long Island, where he attended Chaminade High School in Mineola and subsequently went on to work his way through Syracuse University.

Having earned a Bachelors degree from the University's College of Business Administration, D'Amato took his law degree at the Syracuse University Law School and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1962.

Upon his return to Long Island, Senator D'Amato assumed a position with the Nassau County Attorney's Office and later accepted an assignment to the County's Family Court. He also served as the Island Park Village Attorney and assistant Hempstead town attorney. In 1965, when he was 28, he was appointed Public Administrator of Nassau County - the youngest person ever to hold the position. In 1969, Senator D' Amato was chosen Hempstead Town's Receiver of Taxes, and in 1971 became Supervisor of Hempstead, the largest township in the nation. Re-elected with overwhelm­ ing pluralities, he served in that capacity for three terms. In 1977, Senator D'Amato was elected to the first of two terms as Presiding Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead, thereby ascending to the position of majority leader of the Nassau County Board of Supervisors, serving a population of 1. 5 million residents.

Senator D'Amato holds membership on three influential Senate committees: the Senate Standing Committee on Appropriations; the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; and the Select Committee on Small Business.

Senator D'Amato is chairman of the Subcommittee on Securities, an industry critical to the economic viability of New York State. In addition, he heads up the Urban and Rural Economic Development Subcommittee and the District of Columbia Subcommittee, which is the panel charged with over­ seeing the budget of the nation's Capitol city. He also sits on the following subcommittees: Defense, Foreign Operations, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, Financial Institutions, Consumer Affairs, and Govern­ ment Regulations and Paperwork.

ARCHBISHOP IAKOVOS

Renowned prelate of the Greek Orthodox Church of North and South America, an eminent educator, gifted administrator and compassionate shepherd to his flock, His Eminence, Archbishop lakovos, was born on the island of Imvros, on July 29, 1911, where he received his primary education. He graduated with great honors from the Theological School of Halki of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1934, the same year in which he was ordained a deacon for the Metropolis of Derkon in Therapia, Istanbul. He served there with distinction for five years. He came to the United States in 1939 to assume the office of Archdeacon of the Greek Archdiocese, also accepting a position on the faculty of the Archdiocese's Theological School.

In September 1942, he was appointed Dean of the Cathedral of the Annun­ ciation in Boston where he served until 1954. While in Boston he received a Master of Sacred Theology at the Harvard Divinity School.

In December of 1954, he was elected Bishop of Melita (Malta) and was assigned to the Archdiocese of Central and Wes tern Europe. His consecration took place in the Patriarchal Church in Fener, Turkey, on February 6, 1955. In that same year he was appointed representative of the Ecumenical Patri­ archate at the World Council of Churches which is headquartered in Geneva.

At the age of 4 7, he was elected Archbishop of North and South America by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, shepherding 3,000,000 communicants located in over 550 churches in North and South America. Archbishop lakovos returned to the United States on March 31, 1959, and was enthroned April first, at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in New York City.

Archbishop Iakovos has maintained close ties with Protestant, Episcopal and Roman Catholic Churches in the United States, especially within the World Council of Churches and the National Council of Churches. He is recognized as one of the leaders of the modern ecumenical movement for Christian unity.

Long recognized as a religious leader in the United States, Archbishop Iakovos has accepted the invitations of Presidents John F. Kennedy, Richard M. Nixon, Lyndon B. Johnson and Gerald R. Ford to lead the nation in prayer at presidential inaugurations and celebrations. President Jimmy Carter bestowed upon the Archbishop the nation's highest honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, honoring him as a progressive religious leader concerned with human rights and the ecumenical movement.

REX E. LEE

Dynamic scholar, lawyer and educator, Solicitor General Rex E. Lee's out­ standing achievements are legion. Born on February 27, 1935, in Los Angeles, he attended Brigham Young University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960. He earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1963 from the University of Chicago where he was named to the Order of the Coif.

Having served as law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Byron White in 1963 and 1964, he became an associate with the law firm of Jennings, Strouss, Salmon and Trask in Phoenix, Arizona. He joined the firm as a partner in 1967.

Serving the profession with distinction, Solicitor General Lee was appointed the founding dean of the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University in 1971. He held that position until 197 5, when he was named Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Civil Division of the United States Department of Justice.

Returning to the deanship at Brigham Young University in 1977, he remained there until 1981, when President Ronald Reagan nominated Dean Lee as Solicitor General of the United States. He was confirmed on July thirty-first and sworn in on August 6, 1981.

Solicitor General Lee is a member of the American Bar Association, the Arizona Bar Association, the Utah Bar Association and the District of Columbia Bar Association. He served as a member of the Board of Litigation of the Mountain States Legal Foundation, a public interest law firm, from 1978 until 1981.

Solicitor General Lee is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the United States Court of Claims, the Arizona Supreme Court and the Utah Supreme Court.

THOMAS GREY WICKER

Noted journalist, award-winning writer, respected commentator and pre­ eminent critic, Thomas Grey Wicker was born on June 18, I 926, in Hamlet, North Carolina. He attended public school in his home town and completed his Bachelors degree in 1948 at the University of North Carolina. He worked successfully as an editor for a number of North Carolina newspapers, and then, after training at Officers' Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island in 1952, Thomas Wicker became an ensign in the United States Naval Reserve and served for two years in Japan. He was discharged in 1954 as a Lieutenant Junior Grade.

Resuming his career, Thomas Wicker became sports editor of the Winston­ Salem Journal in 1954 and then editor of the Sunday feature section in 1955. In 1957, he was transferred to the nation's Capitol to serve as the newspaper's Washington correspondent. During the academic year 1957-1958, he enjoyed a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University. Returning to Winston-Salem, he served as editorial writer on the Winston-Salem Journal, and finally as their city hall reporter. In 1959, he became the Associate Editor of the Tennes­ sean, in Nashville, Tennessee. Shortly thereafter, he joined the staff of the New York Times in Washington, covering the White House, Congress, and the national political arena. Appointed Chief of the Washington Bureau of The Times in 1964, he began writing the editorial page column, "In The Nation," in October of 1966. Two years later, Wicker was named Associate Editor of The Times. He was transferred to the New York offices of The Times as a columnist and Associate Editor in 1972.

A respected author, Thomas Wicker has written seven novels and four non­ fiction books, in particular, Kennedy Without Tears, On Press, and A Time to Die, which won the Christophers Award and the Mystery Writers of America Award. His articles have appeared in numerous magazines, including The Atlantic Monthly, Columbia Journalism Review, Esquire, Harpers, The New Republic, The New York Review of Books and The New Yorker.

The academic world has chosen to recognize Mr. Wicker's excellence in journalism with honorary degrees from twelve prestigious colleges and univer­ sities. In April, 1979, he was presented with the William 0. Douglas Award for defense of civil liberties by Public Counsel, the public interest arm of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. Last year, his home state bestowed upon him the North Carolina Award in Literature.
