1986 ANNUAL MEETING PROGRAM Call for Papers, Posters, Exhibits, Films, and Videotapes

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING A PROGRAM ABSTRACT. The Academy is calling for papers, posters, exhibits, films, and videotapes for the 1986 Annual Meet-ing, November 9-13, in New Orleans. .

DEADLINE FOR POSTMARK OF ALL ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS IS MARCH 21, 1986. ABSTRACTS WITH A LATER POSTMARK WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. Please read the following information carefully and comply with the instructions to enable the Program Advisory Committee or the FilmlVideo Advisory Committee to give your abstract thorough consideration. The numbered paragraphs below correspond to the numbered headings on the abstract submission form. By enclosing a self-addressed stamped postcard, you will be notified by return mail of receipt of your abstract.

Please note: abstracts must have at least one Academy Fellow or Member as an author or co-author. Changes on the form will not be possible after it is submitted.

1. Author • Type your name and degree(s) exactly as you want

them to appear in the Academy programs. • Note your Academy 10 number. • Indicate your mailing address and telephone

numbers. • Indicate whether you are an Academy member.

2. Co-authors • List all co-authors exactly as their names and degrees

should appear in the Academy programs. • Give careful thought to the complete names and

order of the co-authors listed. • Note their Academy ID numbers. • List their mailing addresses and telephone numbers. • Indicate whether each is a member of the Academy.

3. Type of Presentation Indicate the type of presentation you wish to make by checking one box only. Please note the various poster and exhibit categories.

Paper or Scientific Poster • The Program Advisory Committee suggests that the

"paper or scientific poster" qption provides the author with optimum opportunity to present his or her work. If this option is checked, the abstract will be considered first as a paper; if not accepted, it will then be evaluated as a poster. However, if only "paper" is checked, and the abstract is not accepted as a paper, it will not be considered as a poster.

• The Committee suggests that single case and instrument reports be submitted as posters rather than as papers.

Scientific Poster • Scientific posters, in general, have the following

characteristics: are presented by individuals rather than by organizations; present scientific material, usually new information; do not solicit members for, or promote an organization; and are not presented on an annual basis. Scientific posters will be judged on scientific merit.

Informational Poster • Informational posters, in general, have the follow

ing characteristics: are presented by organizations rather than by individuals; present information about an organization and its purposes, sometimes including scientific material; may promote an organization and its mission, solicit members, and appeal for support; and may be presented annually. Submissions for informational posters will be accepted on a space-available basis.

Scientific Exhibit • The same standards apply as for scientific posters.

Informational Exhibit • The same standards apply as for informational

posters. Note: exhibits which primarily promote and solicit registration for meetings are considered technical exhibits.

The Academy reserves the right to determine the appropriate category (scientific or informational) fQr each poster or exhibit abstract submitted.

4. Space Requested (exhibits only) • A space request should be indicated for exhibits.

5. For Film/Video Program Onlylength of Film or VIdeotape • List the length of film or videotape on the submis

sion form. The presentation should be between 5 and 20 minutes.

6. Subject Classification • Indicate your choice from the subject classifications

listed on the form. This will be helpful in compiling the program and has no bearing on the acceptability of the presentation. The classifications are as follows: a. Cataract b. Cornea, External Disease c. General Medical Care d. Glaucoma, Iris e. Intraocular Inflammation, Ocular Tumor f. Neuro-Ophthalmology g. Optics, Refraction, Contact Lenses h. Orbit, Plastic Surgery J. Pediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus j. Retina, Vitreous k. Socioeconomic, Administrative I. Trauma

7. Title of Your Presentation • Type the title of your presentation.

S. Abstract • Please keep in mind that a carefully prepared abstract

will assure that the Program Advisory Committee or FilmlVideoAdvisory Committee will be provided with the information necessary to assess the suitability of your work for the program. For this reason try to be as specific as possible. Studies barely underway orin which the outcome m~y be inconclusive should not be submitted.'-'

(OVER)

• Abstracts will be evaluated without the knowledge of the name or affiliation of the author. Thus, identifying phrases within the abstract itself are not desired and may result in the disqualification of the abstract.

• Type the abstract. In order to be considered for the program, the abstract must fit in the box provided, be typewritten and not exceed 10 lines. Otherwise, the abstract form will not be evaluated.

• The Academy will not consider papers that have already been published or submitted for publication. If accepted as a paper for the Academy program, a manuscript must be submitted to Ophthalmology for consideration for publication (see number 14 below).

9. Suggested Discussants (papers only) • Please suggest at least two discussants. • Be sure to include addresses and phone and Aca

demy ID numbers of your suggested discussants.

10. Audiovisual Requirements (papers only) • Please note that the only movie projectors available

are 16 mm with silent or optical sound.

11. Additional Co-authors • List all co-authors exactly as their names and

degrees should appear in the Academy programs. • Note their Academy ID numbers. • List their mailing addresses and phone numbers. • Indicate whether each is a member of the Academy.

12. Proprietary Interest • The Academy Board of Directors has determined

that proprietary interests should not restrict presentation or publication, provided that appropriate disclosure of such interests is made. Appropriate disclosure of proprietary interests shall be expected in presentations, posters, exhibits, courses, films, videotapes, and submitted manuscripts.

• Examples of appropriate disclosures are the following:

"The author holds patent rights to this instrument."

"The author has a financial interest in this instrument:'

"The author is a consultant to the National Widget Company."

"The author owns stock in the National Widget Company:'

"This study was supported in part by the National Widget Company."

• A disclaimer of proprietary interests may be appropriate, especially if such interests may be falsely suspected. Example:

"The author has no proprietary interest in the development or marketing of this instrument, and no financial interest in the National Widget Company."

• Your signature on the abstract submission form indicates that you have complied with this policy and would disclose at the time of your presentation any proprietary interest which you and your coauthors might have.

• Even with the disclosure, presentations and publications should not promote exclusive use of a commercial product.

Permission-to,.. Record • The Academy plans to record all presentations and

discussions at the Annual Meeting. The unedited tapes will be made available for purchase and the proceeds used to support Academy programs. Your signature on the form indicates you give the Academy permission to record your presentation.

Videotape submissions should be on 3/4" U-matic tape with sound. The final version of the film or videotape must be sent with the abstract; it will not be possible to alter the submission at a later date. Films and videotapes will be judged according to educational value, originality. and expert use of the medium.

14. Publication of Material Presented • Authors of papers accepted for presentation at the

American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting are asked to submit before the meeting the original and three copies of their paper to the editor of Ophthalmology, the official journal of the Academy, for consideration for publication in an early 1987 issue. If this is not possible, authors must submit the original and three copies to the audiovisual office at the convention center on Sunday. November 9. Failure to do so may result in disqualification from present or future programs.

• All papers must be submitted in accordance with the "Instructions for Contributors to Ophthalmology," including the Checklist and Copyright Transfer Forms associated with the Instructions. The instructions and forms will be sent to all presenters.

• All papers will be considered for publication in Ophthalmology. Papers considered unsuitable for publication in Ophthalmology will be returned to the author, who is then free to seek publication elsewhere.

• Individuals presenting scientific posters mayor l1lay not submit a paper for consideration for publication in Ophthalmology. However, should the author wish to publish his or her poster material, it may not be submitted elsewhere until it has first been rejected by Ophthalmology.
