Taconic Running Life JULY, 1989 TACONIC SCOTLAND BOUND The Lincoln Hail race was a matter of the utmost importance for many of TRRC's best runners. At stake were a variety of running plums. First off there was the issue of the trip to Scotland, awarded to the first nine qualified club members crossing the finish line. Kevin Wynne, Steve Calidonna, Luis G u e r r a , B r i a n W y n n e , B e r n i e D i e t r i c h , R o n H e r r e i d B o b Hermesch and Doug Miller will compete in the Edinburgh-to Glasgow relay to be held in November. Paul Fendler, the ninth runner across the finish line, is slated to be the alternate. The Scotland Eight form TRRC's first open team. Our second open team is headed by Paul Fendler, followed by Pat McDonald, Tom Church, Scott Abercrombie, Scott Mosenthal, Ken Filmanski, John Hallinan and Gary Steinel. Our Masters will be ably represented by Tony Galfaiio, Joe Porcaro, Frank Sabito, Howie Bashant, Roger Cocking and John Wilson. mas ters team. With so much at stake it was a fine race. Bob Hermesch took the lead in the first mile, but Kevin Wynne soon took control of the race. In fact he was so much in control that at one point he even beat out the lead car. (This was due in part to lead car driver Brian Wheaton flirting with the young la dies at the water stop.) On a warm, humid day on a hilly course, the times were i m p r e s s i v e . T h e fi r s t 2 7 r u n n e r s fi n i s h e d i n u n d e r t h i r t y minutes. John Holland, first 40-49, was eleventh man in at 2 7 : 5 7 . Helen Gordon, just back to racing after the birth of her child, was the second woman at 35:20. Third place finisher Diane Wagner (35:33) was not far behind. Among the younger set, ten-year-old Nicholas Vecchiariello turned in a very nice 37:49. Elizabeth Pres and Meghan Quinn, b o t h 1 2 , fi n i s h e d i n 4 9 m i n u t e s t o c l a i m fi r s t a n d s e c o n d places in the under-15 division. Perhaps the most pleasant surprise of the day was a visit by Margarete and Fred Deckert formerly of Dutchess County, where they were at the core of of the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club. Recently Margarete and Fred have "retired" to Florida. Margarete easily won her division after having done the same a day earlier at the TAC National 5K Championship in Albany. Complete race results are on .page 23. Winners Kevin Wynne and Mary Fanelli- Lund .

T o T R R C :

I just wanted to thank the volunteers for the fine job theydid at the Sybil Ludington Run. The support this year wasphenomenal, and for people to give up most of a weekend dayto aid only about 25 runners is truly "giving back" to runn i n g .
