IfRoemer signs the two billsinto law, Louisiana will havecreated two entirely newclasses of criminals: doctorsand record retailers.
It's understandable thatRoemer is feeling a certainamount of hesitancy aboutsigning the stickering bill,which would also target ar-tists, producers, labels anddistributors of unlabeled mu-sic that is "harmful to mi-nors." If he does, the musicindustry plans to strike backon a variety of fronts. NARMwill cancel plans to hold its1992 convention in New Or-leans, NARAS will removeNew Orleans from the list ofcandidates to become thehome of the Grammy Hall ofFame, and the RIAA will in-itiate a court battle over theconstitutionality of the legis-lation. Wal-Mart Nabs W. Merch.In retail news unrelated to
2 Live Crew, Wal-Mart hasacquired the rack -jobbing,one -stop and warehousing(support) operations of West-ern Merchandisers, in returnfor $28 million worth of Wal-Mart common stock in a tax-free exchange.
The exchange is subject tothe approval of WesternMerch shareholders, the filingof notices pursuant to the An-titrust Improvements Act of1976, and adherence to someother equally incom-prehensible legal/financialmumbo -jumbo.
Prior to the closing of theWal-Mart deal, WesternMerch will split off the retail
book, music and videooperations presently handledby Hastings, Disc Recordsand RTH in a tax-free dis-tribution into Hastings. Fol-lowing this move, the rack -jobbing, one -stop and ware-housing (support) operationswill comprise WesternMerch's sole operation. Aftera subsequent exchange ofcommon stock, WesternMerch will become a whollyowned subsidiary of Wal-Mart.
Hastings, meanwhile, willcontinue the present retailbusiness as a private corpora-tion and will retain its currentarrangements with WesternMerch.

A QUESTION OF BAL-ANCE: The oversaturation of"dance" music that currently
Top 40 air-waves is presenting a lot ofproblems, the worst of whichmay not even be felt until afew years down the road -when, I'm afraid, the formatcould be in the shiner. Unlesswe all want to go throughanother period like we had in'79-83, when Top 40 was avast black hole, we must dosomething about it now!
How about making judi-cious use of the non -dancepop/rock product that isreadily available? No matterwhat your musical stance,you may stand to gain sig-nificantly from the properdayparting and rotation of thelikes of Don Henley, JonBon Jovi, Poison, Heart orCheap Trick. There's alwaysa handful of really good onesout there - at least make useof the cream of the crop. Youmight just notice that theseartists actually have careers,sell albums, people pay to seethem perform, and they'requite likely to be around for awhile and mean something toyour listeners. Remember:Too much disposable music
leads to disposable radio.Also, now more than ever,
what goes between therecords is what counts themost. The successful radiostations will transcend theirmusical limitations and touchthe audience. They will beentertaining, emotional, cine-matic, imaginative and invol-ved. We still must play theright music for the marketsegment, but if that's all wedo, we will lose.
Case in point: The twomost successful start-ups inthe last year had little to dowith the music they played.Tampa's Power Pig andL.A.'s Pirate Radio madetheir dramatic impacts bybeing exactly that - dra-matic. They dared to be dif-ferent. They marketed them-selves very well, but theirmarketing efforts virtuallyignored their respectivemusical positions. Theyfocused on being "entertain-ment centers," not formats.They probably could haveplayed just about any type ofmusic mix and had the sameresults. They were simplybetter between the recordsthan their competition. Thestations that survived andprospered in the last Top 40down -cycle knew how to dothis. Do you?

commotion among dis-gruntled ticket -holders.
The shows in San Antoniowere a success despite un-precedented security by thecity's police and fire mar-shalls, "more than double thatof any concert in memory inthis town," according toKTFM Op. Mgr. Bob Perry.2 Live Crew's appearancedrew coverage from both thelocal and national mediawhich Perry said was apromotional boon for the sta-tion. WHISPERS SCREAM!!Anyone who thought that
15 -year veterans theWhispers are now merely avoice from the past betterthink again. "Innocent," thefirst single from the group'sCapitol debut album "MoreOf The Night," is blowing theroof off Black Radio behindmassive phones. But the realdeal is going down at theretail level, where, despite thefact that the album doesn't hituntil July 30,telling us they've got amonster on their hands.
Heavy consumer retail re-quests are being reported inChicago, Dallas, Pittsburgh,Los Angeles and New York,where both DowntownRecords and J&R MusicWorld are both reportingheavy upper -demo action.

Johnny Gill is another one of those amazing New Edition/solo success stories. After two LPs for MCA, Gilljoined up with the group when Bobby Brown split. With Gill singing vocals, New Edition enjoyed thebiggest record of its career, "Heartbreak" Now, in addition to working with New Edition, he's struck goldon his own. His latest self -titled solo record, produced by two of the hottest teams in the business -Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and L.A. Reid & Babyface - has climbed up the charts in leaps and bounds,with the single, "Rub You the Right Way," leading the charge. Having topped the black charts "Rub" iscrossing over to the Top 20. You had a solo career beforeNew Edition, so you're not newat this.It's funny, because I don't care howlong you've been working, untilyou get that first hit, peopleautomatically go, "overnight suc-cess." I had my first solo album in1982. I've been in this business fora while, but I haven't been aroundthat long. I'm only 23.Why did you join New Edition?Wasn't it hard joining a group?They knew of me. We had donesome concert dates together, andwe knew each other from just run-ning into each other. When theyasked me about joining New Edi-tion, the fact that I had a solocareer was taken into consideration.They knew I was going to do moresolo records. But I didn't mind put-ting it on hold because I knew thatjoining New Edition was definitelya great opportunity for me, as well
as them. It gave me exposure andintroduced me to a youngermarket. They wanted to broadentheir audience and reach an olderaudience. I think they felt that withmy vocal ability, that was what wecould do - and it seems like itworked out for all of us.

People always think ifyou have the two hottest producersin the country, that everything willbe fine and perfect and easy, butthat means you have to live up totheir expectations. And more. That'snot the easiest thing to do in theworld when you're sitting thinking,"Everyone has to like this record."That's a lot of pressure.

Did you know this was going tobe a success?You never know. I had the feelingthat it was going to do well, butthere were thoughts in the back ofmy head - "What if it isn't?" If itwas left up to me, and Terry Lewiswill tell you, I'd still be recording.He told me to get out there. At thevery last song, I was really draggingmy feet, going, "Oh, God, this is it."He was saying, "You're afraid. Buttrust me, you're going to be allright. Believe me you're in goodhands." Jerome Benton, dancer/choreographer for the newly re-formedTime. Platinum -dyed mega -producer and Time keyboardistJimmy Jam Harris just grins and shoots Benton a look of all-knowing cool. It's a look that the members of the Time - Har-ris, Benton, bassist Terry Lewis, keyboardist Monte Moir,vocalist Morris Day and the two Johnsons, guitarist Jesse anddrummer Jellybean, exchange frequently on the L.A. set of therecent video shoot for the first single, "Jerk Out," from theirbrand spanking new Paisley Park/Reprise LP "Pandemonium."They all know what's happenin' is them, as their highly an-ticipated reunion begins to pick up some serious steam. "Therehave been so many people bugging us to put this backtogether," jokes Jimmy. "I wanted to do it just to get everyoneoff my back."
The time seems perfect for the return of one of the '80s' mostrighteous rhythm & funk outfits. Since forming in the Twin Citieseight years ago, the Time's throb & roll - along with Prince, ofcourse - has become a cornerstone of the "MinneapolisSound" through a trio of high -voltage albums: "The Time,""What Time Is It?" and "Ice Cream Castles."
After the group splintered apart in 1985, each of the mem-bers gravitated to individual projects. Jam and Lewis formedFlyte Tyme Studios and became one of the most sought-afterproducing/songwriting teams in the business, launching thecareer of Janet Jackson, among others. Morris Day embarked ona solo recording career and became an actor. Jesse Johnsonreleased three solo LPs and also began to produce. Jellybeanhooked up with Flyte Tyme as a producer and writer, Bentondabbled with a film and recording career, and pro-ducer/arranger/songwriter Moir built a home studio in whichto practice his craft.
Reunion pangs have afflicted each of the members since thebreakup. Atter a couple of aborted attempts at getting backtogether over the past few years, the guys have given it a com-mitted shot in 1990, which will see the release of the new LP,an appearance in Prince's new movie "Graffiti Bridge," foursongs on that film's soundtrack and a planned tour.
The gathering brought back some poignant memories forHITS' John Lappen, a former Minneapolis homeboy turned Hol-lywood hanger-on who definitely needs a lot more than a watchto tell what time it is.

What's the theme of the videofor "Jerk Out?"Jerome Benton: It's what happenswhen the Time walks into a cluband takes the other men's womenaway from them. We don't reallytake them, they just follow us outbecause we're such cool dudes.We "jerk out" the women from theclub. It's kind of a tongue-in-cheekPied Piper theme.Jimmy Jam: Julien Temple's direct-ing it. He's great. He gives thevideo a real feature film feel. Weconsidered working with Spike Lee,but our schedules didn't fit.Why did the reunion attemptclick this time when past effortshad failed?Jam: We were able to get all theoriginal members to commit to it.We'd come close on other occa-sions, but somebody was alwaysmissing for one reason or another.We didn't want to do this withoutall of the original members -that's the only right way todo it. Otherwise, it just wouldn'tbe the Time.Benton: We always felt that we'dget back together, we just didn'tknow when. Because of scheduleconflicts, it took five years to do it.Morris Day: It was timing. We'dbeen talking about this for threeyears and wanted to do it. It wasjust a matter of everybody takingtime out of their solo careers anddoing it. We thought we'd better doit now or people will think thatwe're just crying wolf - that wewere all talk and no action.It seems you guys packed it injust as the band was beginningto hit its stride and become amajor act.Day: I agree. I think we have somethings to settle. We did good busi-ness even at the end, but by thattime, it wasn't the original bandanymore. It was cool, but it neverhad that same feel once we start-ed to lose and change members.Jam: There's some unfinishedbusiness to attend to. Ironically,the biggest -selling Time albumdidn't feature the original lineup. Itwas the video boom that reallyhelped bring the third record to alarger audience. first began. I've always wanted towork with the original band in avideo and film format. It's one ofthe things that the group's pre-mature end kept us from doing.Monte Moir: The original band hadonly two records out, and it seemedlike we were just starting to comeinto our own. It just seemed to getcut short a bit too soon. We didn'twant to come back and play onlythe old stuff. We wanted to take ita step further and have some newmaterial to play along with oursongs from the past. This isn'ta nostalgia thing.Benton: There'll always be un-finished business to attend towith this band.Do you feel the pressure to suc-ceed given the fact that this hasbeen a highly anticipated reunion?Benton: I don't think there's anypressure. We owe it tc our fans tocome back and do what we didbefore we left.Jam: There's no pressure because

everybody is doing well in their out-side careers. We didn't do this be-cause we need the money. We didthis because we wanted to. It's afun thing for us. The fans and thecritics have been very kind to us inour absence. I think there is agreater appreciation now of whatwe were doing several years agothan there was during the time wewere doing it. I think time hasproven us to have been successfuland I see no reason for that tochange now.Day: We didn't take the attitudethat there would be pressure in-volved. We came in feeling that thiswas going to be our party and weput the project out there for peopleto come to our party. We're nottrying to be current in the sensethat we're jumping on the hip -hopor rap bandwagons. You won't hearthat on our record. I think the onlypressure we had was to be trueto ourselves.Did you ever worry that - be-cause of the different directionsthat black music has taken sincethe Time last recorded - you'dsound dated?Day: I really don't think so. Ifsomeone comes up with a seriousgroove, it's going to be well -ac-cepted. We come from the schoolwhere it's about bands, not com-puters. We're able to utilize corn -

At first, we were alittle apprehensive, but that quicklydisappeared. I had huge feelings ofanticipation. Now it's just fun.Benton: Yeah!! The vibe was coolfrom the start. It's like we justcame off a tour and had our littlebreak and now we're preparingto do it all again.Did you have to get Prince's bless-ing to do this?Benton: He gave us his blessing.All the years that I worked with
Prince, he always said that theTime was his favorite group. Hewished we'd never split up.Jam: We spoke to him after theMinneapolis "Lovesexr show. Wetold him that we wanted to reformand asked him if he'd like to be in-volved in any way. It was an ab-solute necessity that we talked tohim before doing this. He had agreat deal to do with shaping whatbecame the Time. For it to be atrue reunion, we had to ask for hisinvolvement. The cifference now isthat we're calling the shots, whilebefore he was the shot caller. Hetold us that he didn't want to beinvolved - that he just wantedto see it happen.Day: Nobody had to do anythingconcerning this project, and that'sthe beauty of it. There was a daywhen we had to do certain things,but that was what ended up beingthe demise of the Time. I didn'thave to talk to Prince, but if I dotalk to him, it's because I want to. Idon't have to do anything just be-cause somebody said to. We'redoing what we want to this time.Moir: I don't think we had to askhim, but we wanted to out ofrespect. He helped us get our footin the door originally.What if he had said he didn't wantyou to do it?Moir: I don't think he would have.He wants to see us succeed.Jam: We probably would have doneit anyway.
Day: It would have been a wasteof breath.Is It true that Prince felt threat-
ened by the Time's success?
Jam: I don't know about that. He'salways been supportive. For us,Prince has always been the eighthmember of the Time. He's beenvery influential. It's sort of likewe're his sons and he's the dad.Day: I think what he created endedup being bigger than he ever ex-pected. Sometimes someone putssomething together in hopes thatthey can control it, but that's nothow it worked out. There was no-thing we could do about it if we wereputting the heat on him. I mean, wecouldn't tone down the show.Moir: He was feeling some pres-sure from the band, as far as thelive performances go. There werecertain cities where we couldn'topen for him because we weremore popular. He didn't like it, buthe did. We were pushing himharder and it forced him to do bet-ter and that caused everybodyto get better. But he doesn't liketo be upstaged.Did Prince break up the band?Moir: Pretty much, yeah. After hefired Jimmy and Terry, it started tofizzle pretty quickly. I left about amonth after that. By the time of thesecond tour, there was a lot oftension and problems.Jam: Terry and I had started ourproducing career by then. We'd gotcaught in a snowstorm after work-ing with the SOS Band and couldn'tmake it to a Time gig. Conse-quently, Prince fired us. I thinkPrince really didn't like it that we'dgone off and started our own ca-reers. He felt it interfered with hisgrand scheme of things regardingthe Time. So, I guess it's mine andTerry's fault that the Time split.Benton: It was a case of growingpains. Growing in different wayscan make any relationship split up.In our case, the split was a friendlyone. There was no animosity. Ithink the split was inevitablebecause we're all such strongpersonalities and we needed toexplore the solo projects thatwe undertook.Day: No, I can't blame anybody forbreaking up the Time. The begin-ning of the end came when Princefired Jimmy and Terry. After that,everyone left of their own free will.We learned a lot from the whole
situation.How do you feel now about yoursolo careers?Day: Obviously, I didn't turn into themega -superstar I hoped I would.It's not like I sold 10 millionrecords or anything. The fortunatething about my career is that it'sbeen both lucrative and a slowgrowth process. There have beenups and downs, but it's beenpretty consistent as to who MorrisDay is. I don't think anyone hasforgotten me.Benton: I had both a record andfilm deal, but things didn't quite goas I had planned. L.A. just wasn't agood place for me. It's tough here.I feel more at home in Minnesota.It suits my lifestyle more.Moir: I've kept a lower profile, but
Jam: For me, the "MinneapolisSound" is Prince and the differentkinds of music that have arose asthe result of Prince. That's mydefinition. Making it wasmade easier by the fact that wedidn't butt heads. We took a familyapproach to the process thatenabled us to bury our egos. As forthe movie, I think it will be good. Itwas certainly fun to make.Benton: Anything that Prince doesusually has genius written all overit. Hopefully, the public and criticswill think the same thing. Makingthe record was a slow process be-cause of our schedules, but it got alot more exciting as the processwent on. I really love it.Day: It's a logical extension of ourearlier stuff. I think it'll kill. Soshould the movie, but that's adifferent business.Is there such a thing as the "Min-neapolis Sound" or is It Just hype?Day: I think it's a very valid term,though it's hard to define it now. Ithas to do with the sound of thedrums and the way the keyboardsare used - particularly the wayPrince and the Time utilized thoseinstruments. It's not exclusively ablack sound because the peoplewho pioneered it have had extremepop success. It's hard to saywhat's pop and what's urbanthese days.

We all agree thatwe can do the Time for the rest ofour lives if we want. That might

"I was a carpenter," laughed Warner Bros. VP of National SalesCharlie Springer, explaining how he got his start in the record biz. Itseems some insightful soul at Tower Records/S.F. hired him to buildtheir first eight -track wall shelf in 1968. Charlie, who was already abonafide record junkie, expertly helped so many customers that hewas immediately hired at the Columbus & Bay outlet. After Tower,it was back to his native Chicago and his first WEA gig as "orderpicker #9" in the Des Plaines, Ill., warehouse. After working inChicago and St. Louis for WEA, Charlie joined WB in 1984 as Na-tional Sales Manager in Burbank. A true champion of great music,regardless of style or label affiliation, Springer owns 18,000 LPs,12,000 45s, 10,000 cassPttes, 5,000 CDs, 800 78s, and a handful ofeight -tracks as evidence of his devotion. HITS' Joe "Ducky" Med-wick hordes a single copy of "The Alessi Brothers' Greatest Hits."
You are one of the true music peoplein a key sales slot at a major label.Can you sometimes become too at-tached to a project?I don't know if I become too attached.There are definitely projects that aredisappointing to anyone at the labelwho have really been involved withthem. It takes the masses a lot longerto get into some music than recordjunkies.Any specific examples?I've been a Replacements fan since thevery early Twinffone records. I justthought every record they've made hasbeen a great development in theircareer and every record has gotten bet-ter and better and I'm truly surprisedthey aren't household names. At thesame time, I'm blessed that I'm work-ing for a true artist development -oriented company and we'll be stayingwith the Replacements until they arehousehold names, which I reallybelieve will happen with theirnext album.How do you communicate that en-thusiasm for a new act to the field?At WEA, we have both in-housemarketing reps and alternative in-house marketing reps who key in onnew acts, working them specifically atthe retail level. These in-house repsreally help out in educating retail. Itruly believe all new stuff that has tobe developed usually starts witha retail base.WB has a hugely successful andlarge roster. How do you keep allthe balls rolling?We're in the process of dividing thelabel up. We've reactivated RepriseRecords. The roster is slowly butsurely going to be half Warner Bros.and half Reprise. And, as you know,we are going to be manufacturing anddistributing Iry Azoff's Giant Records.Does it ever get to you when a Bon-nie Rail or a Rodney Crowell leavesthe label and finds success else-where?
It's interesting you've chosen two art-ists I'm a huge fan of. When BonnieRain won her four Grammys, I can tellyou there were as many high fives atthe WB party for Bonnie as there werefor k.d. lang. I know a lot of peoplewho worked their tails off for Bonniefor a number of years - and the samething goes for Rodney Crowell. Wefeel we are a very artist -oriented com-pany and if, for whatever reason, anartist doesn't find success with us butfinds it with another company later on,we say more power to them.Who do you see as the next Bonnie,meaning an artist who's been greatfor a long time, but for some reasonhasn't struck the public's fancy?I'd say John Hiatt would be a goodcontender. I think he's been makingreally inspired records for a long timeand hopefully the public is ready tocatch up with him.
Sometimes, if you look at the LyleLovetts and k.d. langs of the world,they are hugely responsible because ofthe limited amount of airplay andvideo play on artists like that. What'sgreat is how retail can maintain inter-est in an artist until radio and videofinally comes to the party. It's verypleasing to see retail stand behind anartist like k.d. lang. Faith No More isanother act that is now a year old andis finally getting full rotation video ex-posure and also is exploding at radio,but retail has been there all along.What could retail do better?We could stand some improvement inthe service area. It's real important forpeople who work in record stores to befamiliar with all kinds of music, notjust specific genres. They should knowwho Mantovani is, who Van Morrisonis and who Severed Head In A Bag is.How are your guitar lessons

"Stray" and "The GentleKind" are also wonderful in the most heartwrenching way.Roddy has always been a gifted songwriter and may he contin-ue to follow his creative bliss. Not since Joe Jackson has anartist been able to pursue his creativity in such a blaze of glory.
Wire, "Manscape" (Enigma/Mute): Ifyou are unfamiliar with three of themost influential albums ever made:"Pink Flag," "154," and "Chairs Miss-ing," cease reading this review, do notstop, do not pass go, until you haveheard these records. Wire have played acritical role in the evolution of Post
Modem music, which is more than reason enough to buy theirlatest, as well. "Manscape" covers the same ground as their lastfew LPs, with New Order-ish verve, and let's hope it makesthem rich and famous.
24-7 Spyz, "Gumbo Millenium" (In -Ef-fect): If every kid was given a copy ofthis album and a copy of the new Iggyalbum, they would learn more about lifethan they'll ever learn in school. Thesecond 24-7 Spyz album is awesome.Racism, oil spills, love and other grimrealities are presented in full sonic for-ce; more guitar -driven than the last record. This is powerfulstuff, kinda like Soul Asylum meets De La Soul on SoulTrain. MAKE SURE you see 24-7 Spyz live. They'll blow youaway.

The Cavedogs' LP (produced by EdStasium) will be out this month, the Posies (produced by JohnLeckie ships late Aug., and the Rembrandts (self -produced byDanny Wilde and Phil Solem) is set for September.... The sixth
band, which a number ofA&R people overlookedbelieving they'd already beennabbed, is being rushed byseveral labels and pubs - butI'm not gonna mess with thepossibilities by mentioningtheir name until somethinghappens.... Another just -inkedact with a lot of potential isBuffalo -based modern -popgroup Beat Goes Bang,bagged by Enigma's JohnGuarnieri, with the support ofboth label head Bill Hein andA&R guy David Gerber, whorecently moved over fromRestless. TIMES THEY SHOULD BE A-CHANGIN': Don't get me wrong."Beat's Me" has loads of admiration for the LA. Times' influen-tial Dean of American Rock Critics West Of The Mississippi,Robert Hilburn. His enthusiasm is remarkable and he does try tokeep up with new stuff, but can you really imagine him sittingaround snapping his fingers or banging his head to Ice Cube andFugazi, two of his midyear Top Ten? I can't, but maybe that'sbecause my most -played records so far this decade include"Raffi In Concert With the Rise & Shine Band" (Taylor Max sez"Ban the Box!") and the cosmic "Pet Sounds" CD. The latterwas the subject of an incredible series in Garry TrudeauDoonesbury, with Andy dy-ing of AIDS and receiving theCD version of "Pet Sounds"as His final earthly blessing.The sequence ends with thecharacter passing away andleaving the scrawled message,"Brian Wilson is God," as thedoctor nods sagely, "Hmm...He must have gotten hold ofthe 'Pet Sounds' CD." NOT NAT KINGDon't be fooled by the press photos circulating 'round. True, LloydCole is quite the commanding figure, tall and rather surly looking,but he's actually very polite and perhaps even a bit reserved. Hislatest self -titled release is also his first solo flight since Lloyd Cole &
the Commotions disbanded, and some critics say that it is Cole'smost cohesive work to date. The first single, "Downtown," wentTop Five on the Post Modern charts, and now Lloyd Cole's makingthe rounds, pressing the flesh, signing records and being thecourteous British artist that he is. Having recently moved to NewYork City, he's living amongst the masses with his new Americanwife, happily unrecognized by most and playing lots of goodAmerican pool in smoky dives. Unfortunately, he risked a dive inhis own career lately when he visited the HITS offices in thedowntown septic tanks of beautiful Sherman Oaks and talked withMiss Rot Rooter 1990, Heather Lose.
How's America treating you?
In what way? It's very different here.
What about the people?
Well, New York is treating me pretty
nicely - treating me like a regularguy, which is sort of a change. My
life is pretty normal, when I'm not
working. The rest of the time, I get
treated pretty much the same as any
other Post Modern artist.
Do you think there's a distinction
between, say, a Post Modem
artist and...
One who sells records?
Yeah, like the Rolling Stones
or somebody?
For sure. I find it kind of difficult, just
dealing with the whole thing... it's so
much more commercial and or-
ganized over here. There are given
ways of achieving goals that seem to
be very fixed. It seems everybody is
expected to do exactly the same as
the last guy, and I don't like that. I
find it very difficult to come in here
and meet and greet people.
How would you do it if you hoda choke?
I wouldn't do it. I mean, I'm quite
happy to sign records for people, if
they want me to sign records. But it's
almost like.. in Britain, they give
merchandise and things away to
radio people and to people at
magazines like this. They come up
with gimmicks... I guess they do it
over here as well, except over here
they just seem to feel like they can
proceed to give away the actual guy.
So you're running around talking
to people...I'm running around talking to peo-
ple, yeah, and I find it very uncom-
fortable. This is not what I got into
rock & roll for.
Do you enjoy playing live?
A certain amount, but I really like
making records. I enjoy songwriting,
and I like being in the studio because
of the finished product.
One of the guys in the art room
wanted to know why they X'edyou out on the cover of your
new record.
Basically, it was looking too pristine.
It looked like a sort of Peter Gabriel -
type photograph. And we liked it -it was kind of evil looking, but the
whole image itself was too neat and
tidy. We tried various things, and
we ended up liking the look of
that cross.
I liked extremely well those photo-
graphs of Marilyn Monroe that
turned up after she died. She crossed
herself out with lipstick, the ones that
she didn't want anybody to see. The
figured one of the few advantages
would be that I should be able to
have more latitude.
In some areas, the music is
very lush, and in others it's kind
of sparse.
Yeah, it's meant to go up -down, up -
down. My favorite bit on the record
is out of "Sweetheart" into "To The
Church," which is kind of like the
two most opposite tracks on the
whole record.
Is there more pressure not having
a band?
Not really. The prospect of it was
kind of scary, but once we got a little
bit done, it became apparent that I
could make records by myself.
There's just less grief involved. Less
discussions (laughs). But I do still
work with producers, to try and
have an overview of what I do
so that I don't get someplace
too self-indulgent.
In your press release, they liken
you to people like Bob Dylan and
Lou Reed.
Do they mention Ray Davies as well?
Let's kook... yes.
They do mention Ray Davies,
okay...see he's the only one I admit
similarity to. I think I have something
in common with him. I guess Lou
Reed and Dylan are heroes for sure,
but all three of them, even Davies,
they've all done what you shouldn't
do: they've all kept going after they
peaked. It's difficult to have heroes
when they undermine their greatness
by just carrying on and on and on. I

redefine contemporary music. Even
the national advertising agencies have
noticed. They're using people like

threatening delivery or street language
which defined the intense rap we star-
ted with five or six years ago. This is
accessible music for the suburbs. In

heavy metal as the rebellious music of

While the big boys are steppingup to support Atlantic's deci-sion to pick up embattled LukeRecords, and rightly so, it's in-teresting to note that just a fewshort weeks prior to Atlantic'sbrave and brilliant move,NAIRD and the independentrecord community were mak-ing a brave, if misunderstood,move of their own by issuing astatement of non -consensusregarding the stickering issue.Several NAIRD members, in -chiding Green Linnet's WendyNewton. Bayside's RobinWise. Sugar Hill's Barry Possand Alligator's Bruce Iglauer,were outspoken in their opposi-tion to self -censorship sticker-ing measures of any kind.Iglauer in particular was dis-pleased about the misconcep-tions the media - specifically,Billboard - had createdregarding just what NAIRDhad said and meant in formulat-ing their statement. SaidIglauer, "After a lot of discus-sion, a statement came out ofthe board; that statement,which was passed by themajority of the board, wasnever printed by Billboard. Itwas a very strong anti -censor-ship statement, drawing paral-lels between the record industryand the recorded word, and thebook industry and the printed

word." At the same time,Iglauer emphasized that"[NAIRD] is a trade organiza-tion, which means it cannot dic-tate business practices to itsmembers, any more than I

Said RecordBar Prez Steve Bennett: "[Thindies' stickering stance is] noa major issue with us, otherthan the fact that if we havelot of inconsistency on the in-dustry side, it's going to makit much more difficult to jushave operational things work 'the store." Record World'Mitch Umber agreed: "It's avery sticky situation. It couldpresent a problem if I'm goingto have 80% of my storesstickered and 20% not." In-deed, Musicland's Dick Odette,stated that if it came down to aquestion of buying unstickered,potentially offensive prouduct,"We would probably have topass." While the industry ap-plauds Atlantic's move, it
