On a quiet day 115 runners gathered together at the of the day was 17-year-old Chris Reilly from Goshenstarting line for this year's race. A moment of silence NY who arrived late and made it to the starting line withwas observed for Veterans' Day but especially for a vet- his old pair of training shoes. Unable to change into hiseran whom I had known for the past 15 years through racing flats, he ran 17:32 for fifth overall and one of themy work here at the hospital. Bob Horton died in a fire fastest times for his age group. Also, Jim Fillis and Bobin Peekskill on November 3 while many of us were in Hermesch both got into the record books for their ageNew York running the marathon. He was one of the groups this year. At some future time I will publish a listquiet persons I've known who spoke by his actions. of the record times for the Thanks To Our Vets Race.

It was somewhat like that for this year's race winner, Although Bob Hermesch has not missed a Veterans'Scott Mosenthal, who quietly goes about his steady Day race since it began in 1984, he has not had therunning. His first place fi^sh was ahead of two masters consistency that Clem Mclay has had in finishing hisrunners. Bob Hermesch and John Holland. On the eight races. Clem holds the record for finishing the racewomen's side, Laurie Golden 37, of Monsey NY was in the same place each of the past eight years: last. Anddelighted with her win. She was followed by Cynthia as long as Clem doesn't get any faster I hope he canBrown from West Point and Judy Freeman. In the past, continue his record for the next umpteen years. He isJudy has come over to support this race and usually ahead of a lot of others who never make it to start, brings her daughters to help. One of the notable times

I was hanging out in my car in Downing one late afternoon, waiting for someone to run with. A few yards awaywas an old tree, or what used to be an old tree. It had beenslowly dying, and one day the park workers cut it down. But it was no sad stump. No way. It had been roughlycarved into a chair, steps leading to a lofty seat, and no kidcould pass it by without trying it out. Now I watched as amom and her daughter, about five, wearing an oversizeddress of pinks and purples, parked. The girl fidgeted as hermom got out, impatient to hit the playground. A stop atthe wonderful chair. Only this time, it was Mom who assumed the seat. Not a particular fancier of five-year-olds,I had to smile in appreciation as the child paused, faced TheQueen, and executed a theatrical curtsey. After which sheresumed her role as nineties child and dashed off to findinteresting rocks.

1 would lilce to thank the club and its members for thegreat support in my quest to do the NYC Marathon as myfirst marathon. (I told myself - why not start with the biggest.) Just by mentioning this to a few people, I got goodsupport and advice from the beginning. (Apply early, trainhard, take the TRRC bus ride down to the start...and comeparty after.)

So race day came, weather was great. I was told thatgetting up front at the start was one of the hardest parts ofthe race. But I knew that that wouldn't be hard for a veteran rock-conccrt-goer like me. I knew all those rock concerts helped do more than just ruin my hearing. My mindwas on telling myself not to go out too fast. It's not a lOK,it's a marathon. I kept thinking "what is this so-called wallat 20 miles going to feel like?" I was prepared for a lotworse than just the cramp in my leg (after 20 miles) thatmade me walk for a while. The only walls I saw were wallsof people throughout the race. Every few miles someonewould yell out "GO TACONIC" which helped the last fewm i l e s .

Here it is two days later and it's still uncomfortable towalk up and down stairs or take my dog for a walk (becauseHE wants to run). I think we'll wait until Thursday to runagain.

Well, thanks again TRRC. I don't think I would havemade my goal or had such a wonderful day if I hadn't mett h e T R R C .

A Night of Wine and Roses?

There was plenty of wine, but no roses. The annual Taconic RoadRunners* dinner dance did have plenty of wine...and of course,beer...as well as good food, good friends and plenty of dancing.O v e r 8 0 m e m b e r s a n d g u e s t s e n j o y e d g a t h e r i n g a t L o m b a r d i ' sRestaurant in Mahopac November 8. Runner of the Year went to a very deserving Tom Church. Tom hasbeen in the winner's circle consistently this year. He defended hiscrown in the Philipstown lOK and won North County News and theSaint Patrick's Day 2M. He was second at the Father Mooney, DebbieShram and Mudde rs and Grun te rs , t h i r d a t L i nco ln Ha l l and t heFreezer Five 5K and won his age group at the Jan Peek and the MileFly in Peekski l l . Tom was also a stalwart in the Manhattan toPeekskill Taconic Relay team and the Taconic team that placed sixthin the NYRRC Team Championship. But what really makes Tom Churchspecial is that when he is not running he is helping out at any andall events, truly a Runner of the Year, congratulations Tom.

Volunteer of the Year honors were bestowed upon John Hallinan andG r e g D i a m o n d .This year we could not decide on any one individual. John Hallinanis well known for his work as club president, but now that he hasretired he has shown that he has not tired. John can be seenhelping out consistently at races and events and doing much work inthe background with sponsors and others to keep the club moving int h e r i g h t d i r e c t i o n . T h a n k s a m i l l i o n .Greg Diamond is running better than ever, but it doesn't stopthere. Greg's love of computers has brought Taconic into theelectronic age. In fact Greg can score a race faster than TomChurch can run a 5K, or Harry could give out awards. Additionally,we must point out that he trained Nancy for her superb marathonfi n i s h .Tru l y g re a t se l e c t i o n s , d o n ' t yo u t h i n k ? !

Door prizes were part of the evening's surprises. A Sony Walkmanand a Watchman were given away in a tradition we are thinking ofc o n t i n u i n g n e x t y e a r .

Thanks to Rich Adamski and Steve Quinn who co-chaired the evening. Thanks too, to President Ed McLaughlin and rambling speaker FredLoehfelm who took over Harry Neeson's usual emcee duties. Harrycommented later that Fred seems to have as much difficultyrelinquishing the microphone as Harry does!

Preliminary plans for next year's dinner dance include schedulingIt for the Friday after the New York Marathon, since this dateproved very successful this year. Next year's door prize winnerwill be selected from the first fifteen paid reservations. So markyour calendars and your budget to include next year's party. Whoknows? There may even be roses !
