The 5K was run on February 9 in cold temperatures after a light snowfall the day before. It was truly a "Freezer Five" with the 1 1 9 fi n i s h e r s s l i p p i n g a n d s l i d i n g t h e e n t i r e d i s t a n c e . I t w a s reported that the winner Cam Dauler fell twice during the race. Thank goodness he heard the advice of Owen (Sal) McCrudden concerning falling in races. (Owen's advice for the rest of you that didn't hear is to "get right up!") Cam's winning time was 1 6 : 5 3 , w h i l e L a u r i e ' s w a s 2 0 : 5 4 . The Five Mile race was run on February 23 with a temperature of about 55 degrees. (I guess that makes it a Freezer Five Five Five Miler.) Jim McDermott suggested we rename the race the "Global Warming Five Miler." Scott's winning time was 27:40 while Laurie came in with a fine 33:06. Of special note was Nick Caswell, who placed second overall only 5 seconds behind. It won't be long 'til we see Nick win one of our races as a master. (You may think we have had masters win our races outright before, but a check of the results in the last few years of newsletters did not reveal any.) As most of you know there are two ways to run a race: one with shoes and another with volunteers. The Freezer Fives are no exception. We could not do it without the volunteers. Special thanks to Rich Adamski my co-race director and course auditor. Others whose help was priceless include Jim McDermott (Fireman), Pete Meisler, Brian Wheaton, Melanie Benvenue, Hank Buchanan, Pat Loehfelm, Denise Friedly, Katy and Conor Quinn, A1 Gorman (First time volunteer), Owen (Sal) McCrudden (Poet Laureate), John Hallinan, Joe Porcaro, Rick Salemmo, Tom Church, Ken Filmanski, Ed McLaughlin, Pete Corsino, Greg Diamond, and Frank Rothwell. Thanks to those who helped and I don't have your name (like the other helpers at the 5 Mile water stop.) We'll be back next year and I h o p e y o u w i l l t o o ! iTcczcr rives 5K winners I^urie Simunek (riglit) and Cal Dauler head toward the finisli line after sliding around the icy course. D e a r Ta c o n i c s :Just received a letter with some clippings from the

newsletter. You don't know how much I miss the club, the races, the park, and all of you. By the time you getthis, the holidays will be over and I hope they were greatfor all of you.

Took a flying leap, well, maybe flying fall is more likeit, last week while running. I swear the pavementmoved! Anyway, my training has been curtailed a bit,but I hope to be at it again in earnest soon. The injurieswere minor, but, alas, infection sets in right away here.I'm on the mend though.

Almost none of the races here have women's divisions, although near Bogota, a woman won a recent racein 38:40, so they must be out there. I guess I won't beable to use heat as an excuse anymore, I'm sure 111 beable to think of something else by July.

Let me thank Carmelo for keeping the roads safe forracing in Dutchess. I hope you're not too badly injuredand you're getting lots of recognition and sympathy.

Hope the masters team had a great run in Boston,You guys are still my heroes. Saw a few of the timesfrom the Yorktown lOK. Great going! And great performances at Dutchess. Go Green!

I love my job here and Colombia is definitely an experience. I guess a break from Polypro and Gortex isgood for me, and I even have a tan of sorts.

I may not get back in time for the relay, but I'll try.Sign me up for Father Mooney, though. Can't wait tosee you all then. I've got lots of stories to share, and I'msure you've got tour war stories piling up too. Justthink; someone you haven't told all your '91-'92 PRs to,who actually understands what you are talking about.Even in Spanish.

Ed, I would really appreciate a newsletter. Can weafford that? You're a great group, even if you neverw r i t e .

D e a r E d :

Thank you for your letter of December 17 concerning TaconicRoad Runners Club members participation in the 1991 New YorkC i t y M a r a t h o n .

As you discovered, we do follow certain requirements for teamparticipation and qualification for awards in all of ourevents. One requirement is that all race applications musthave the team affiliation included on them in order for therunner to be eligable towards any team awards.

I cannot waive this rule for the Taconic Road Runners Club asit is a rule which applies to all Clubs in all of our eventsa n d m u s t b e a d h e r r e d t o .

I wish you and your Club members continued success in yourrunning and look forward to awarding you a team award for the1992 New York C i ty Mara thon.
