rom 1V ad campaigns to the pages of the

Wall Street Journal, everyone seems to be

talking about "getting to know our

customers again" or "putting the customer

first." It seems many businesses and corporations

have lost touch with who their customers are.

This begs the question, "Who are the

Fraternity's customers?" Mark Hollis, President

of Publix and a Stetson (Chi) alumnus,

believes the institutions which will eventually

employ today's student members are our

ultimate customers. Hollis, who is profiled in

these pages, sees the new alumnus as the

product of the fraternity factory.

Others have asserted that our members

--whether students or alumni -- are our

customers, and that fraternity is a product in

and of itself.

Another perspective is a relational sce

nario, with "fraternity" filtering down from the

nationa l organ ization -- the many alumni

volunteers supported by the ational Head

quarters - -and rising up from our student

chapters and alum ni organizations. The public

is affected as well, mostly through our philan

thropy and community leadership .

t the ational Headquarter , we strive to

trea t studen t and alumni alike as cu tamers;

and thi year, we' re getting to know alumni in

particular rather well. Our reacquaintance is

evidenced through a new emphasis in alum ni

involvement, services and communications.

We've added a Director of Alumni Relations,

David Adams, Ala

bama (Omicron), to

ass ist a lumni associa

tions and provide

increased support

services to our

national network of

a lumni vo lunteers.

And Jon athan Scott,

Valdosta State (Beta

Tau), joins us as a

consu ltant to the Star & Lamp, to help better

communicate Pi Kappa Phi's many successes.

This issue of the magazine is dedicated to

a lumni , so we are profiling four who have

demonstrated the power of fraternity in their

personal lives and political careers. We're a lso

reporting o n the sta tus of three housing

campaigns, announcing Supreme Chapter

plans and highlighting a n alumni group

involved in PUSH America.

In add iti o n, the Foundation Annual

Report pays tribute to the 2,800 alumni who

are the financial backbo ne of the organization.

Many of you respo nded to our readers'

survey in th e las t issue and deserve thanks.

Your comments are suggestions a re helping

will want to read from cover to cover.

0 If you want to place a safe wager, you

can bet Mark Hollis knows his business.

President of one of America's largest

grocery chains, Publix

Super Markets Inc., the

Stetson (Chi) alumnus

has played in nearly every

arena of the supermarket

super-industry. Initiated into Pi Kappa Phi in

1953, Hollis became President

and Chief Operating Officer of

Publix in 1984, overseeing nearly

475 stores located in Flo rida,

Georgia and South Carolina.

Currently the eighth- largest

supermarket in the United States,

the chain employs over 90,000

employees.

"I'm a grocery man at heart,

Holl is says, "I'm a merchant, and

proud of it! I started when I was

.__ 12-years-old, bagging grocer-

ies in a little grocery store,

and have stayed with the

same company ever since."

Since his bag boy days in

1946, Hollis has also worked

as a stock clerk, produce

manager, store manager,

and pres ident in 1984.

Through the years, he has

seen many changes in the indus

try. "I was in the store with the

fi rs t refrigerated service case, and

later saw air co nditio ning,

elect ro nic checko uts and the

scanner," says Hollis. "Custo mers

Southern College.

Despite his education,

Hollis claims to have origi

nally been "a reluctant student."

"I wanted to get married and go about

my career with Publix and my father sa id, ' o

you're not, you're going to college: But I'm glad

the circumstances were like they were because

my education has meant an awful lot to me."

One of the experiences which Hollis

credits as transforming him from reluctant

student to a business leader was his under

graduate fraternity experience with Chi chapter.

"The camaraderie that I experienced in the

Fraternity has paid off for me as I have devel

oped the ability to get along with people in

every role that I've had in my career," he said .

While at Stetson, Hollis served in almost every

officer capacity, with the exception of Archon.

"I got married at the end of

my junior year, and I was

working so hard my sen ior

year that I was not ab le

to pursue my goal to be

Archon."

Hollis originally

became involved

with Pi Kappa Phi

even before attend

ing Stetson . "I had

been introduced to

the Fraternity by a

friend of mine from

home who was a

year ahead of me,"

he recalled, "and I

went up to visit him

one weekend. He

was a Pi Kapp and

introduced me to all

the 'b ig men on ca mpus: and they were all Pi

Kapps. So I was really, in my hea rt, a Pi Kapp

before I ever graduated from high school."

In add ition to his position with Publix,

Hollis is Chairm an of the Trustees for Stetson

University and serves on the board of four

other orga nizat ions. He is also a directo r of the

Florida Council of 100 and Florida TaxWatch.

As a lifelong merchant and grocery man,

Hollis knows well th at a successful business

custom ers and their

needs. A 1987

Pi Kappa Phi Hall of

Fame inductee, he has

simil ar advice for th e

fraternity's chapters

and leaders:

"Take a whol e

different look a t who

is the custo mer of

Pi Kappa Phi. Who is

the rea l custom er and

who is the product? It

would seem to me the

product is not th e

Fraternity as an

organization, th e

product is a studen t who graduates better

prepared for life.

"The custo mer is the business, the graduate

school, the leadership o rganiza tion th at is

desperately searching for effective peopl e to

join th eir o rga nizati ons. The custom er is a

public that wan ts a student who is prepared

not just academica lly, but socially to accep t

leadership responsibilities. "

Hollis' personal goal for the future is to

develop new leadersh ip so that when he

retires, people will say that Publix is better

than it has ever been. "I love my work, and I

love the company," he says. "I never had a

desire to look anywhere else."

leadership and politics have been a

part of the malwup of Pi Kappa Phi.

ver the last several months,

America has seen sweeping

changes in its political climate.

When the nation went to the polls

in ovember, the electoral su n

shined favorably on Pi Kapps who

were elected or reelected to public office. Two

Pi Kapp politicians, U.S. Congressman Howard

Coble and Robert Sheheen, former Speaker of

the House for South Carolina, have spent years

representing their electors, while two brothers

- - Jim Rzepkowski and Denny unnelley -- are

working in their state capitals for the first time.

Across the nation, Pi Kappa Phi continues

to produce community and civic leaders on

both ends of the political spectrum. The Star &

Lamp is proud to profile these recently elected

or reelected civil servants.

SIll

U.S. Congre ssm an Howard Coble

A decade before th e "Contract with

America," Congressman Howard Coble of

orth Caro lina may have felt like a lone vo ice,

cryi ng o ut in th e wilderness. In some ways, he

still is.

In 1984, Cob le, a Greensboro attorn ey

who had been recently initiated as an alumnus

into U.N.C.-Greensboro (Epsilon Iota); was

reluctantly con templating a run for Congress.

Fo r a small town "farm boy," the impetus was

certainly not the call of big city Washington,

but rather friends, rel atives and the Republi

cans in the state's sixth district who wanted

him to cut "outrageous" government spending.

Wh il e Coble did not originally have a "fire

in the belly" for Congress, he did have a

penchant for saying "no"-- a single word

that has become his battle cry.

Since being elected in November

1984, Cob le has become a member

tee on Coast Guard and

Maritime Transporta ti on,

having served in the Coast

Guard and having spent 18

years in the Reserves.

In a 1985 article in Spectator Magazine,

Coble explains why some call him "Red Button

Coble":

"One day I stood up on the House floor,

and you know each of us has a card that we're

given to activate our voting machines? I took

my card out, I said, 'Folks, there is a "no"

button at your panel: 1 said, 'Try that red

button for a change, it works: I said, 'You

might like it!'"

"I don't want to be known as 'Congress

man NO; but we're gonna have to be willing to

say 'no' to some of these special programs and

special projects because they've been doin' it

recklessly and imprudently for 40 years, and

we're runnin' out of time," he added.

These days, of course, these words do seem

to be, more or less, the language of Washing

ton --what everyone has on their agenda.

But in one fight against spending, Coble

has at times stood by himself. Since his fir t

election in 1984, Coble vowed not to take part

in the congressional retirement plan . Ever

since, he has fought to enact legislation to

reform congressional retirement benefits. As a

freshman Representative in 1985, he intro

duced a bill to cut pensions to the same size as

those for other federal workers. ot one

congressman stood beside him at the news

conference.

The congressional retirement plan cur

rently costs taxpayers over $15 million each

year. At the end of 1993, there were 391 living

former congressmen receiving pensions, with

an average annual annuity of $44,479. Some

former congressmen receive over $100,000.

"I do not believe," says Coble, "that

retirement benefits are necessary to entice

qualified Americans to run for Congress.

Instead, the generosity of the congressional

really began to turn around in the spring of

1994 . The last couple of semesters, we have

had double-digit rush classes."

Bill Burke added: "We used to have more

than enough chairs in our meeting room, but

now we have people sitting on the floor. I

remember walking into a meeting and think

ing I was in the wrong room!"

camps to support groups-- will be offered.

them. Based in

Wi nter Park, Fla., the

Boggy Creek Gang

Ca mp will serve more

than 4,000 people

each year afte r its

opening in late 1995.

The Boggy Creek

Glorfield's passion for camping was planted

during his summers at college, when he

worked as a camp counselor. He believes

kids becau e it

provides "a real

founded by actor Paul ewman and U.S.

General orman Schwarzkopf. There are now

five affil iate camps, all serving children with

disabilities and chronic illnesses.

The original camp is in Ashford,

Conn., and the others are in

upstate ew York, Aspen, Co. and

Kildare, Ireland .

The Boggy Creek Gang Camp,

thanks to Florida's temperate

climate, will operate year round

and serve many more chronic

illness groups than is possible in

colder weather. During the summer months, at

least 10 "traditional " camping sessions will be

held, most specific to an illness or disability.

Having always dreamed of owning and

running a camp for kids, he says destiny played

a happy role in making his dream come true.

After finishing his M.B.A. in finance at Florida,

he worked as a financial analyst and lobbyist

for General Mills Restaurants, and later ran a

petroleum distributorship in central Florida.

He became aware of the Boggy Creek

Gang's efforts during its early stage in 1990.

After several years of research, the Gang wa

ready for an executive diredor, and the Glorfield

Boggy Creek Gang match was made in early '94.

"Building the Boggy Creek Gang ha been

a tremendous amount of work, but a very

positive experience," he says. "People have

taken a look at the common good of helping

kids, and it is a powerful thing."

12 T H E STAR & LAM P

With the tum of a new tide in Washington,

it is expected that Coble will now receive more

support for what has been his one-man crusade

aga inst what he calls a "taxpayer rip-off. "

" ow people are li stening to

me," Coble to ld the Star & Lamp. "I

hope we can get reform."

Bill Zel iff (R- .H. ), who along

with two o th ers joi ned Cob le in

cosponso ring a bill last year to

abolish congressional pensions

altogether, says that it is a "travesty"

that Coble's fight has been over

looked until now. "A guy who stuck

his neck out when he did, at a time

when it was unpopular, deserves a

lot of credit. ow anybody can get behind this

stu ff because it's in vogue," he said .

But now, for perhaps the first time since

he came to Washington, it appears that the 64-

year-old Pi Kapp --affectionately described

by the Washington Post as a "cigar chomping,

back slapping congressman from Tobacco

Road" -- is definitely in style.

S.C. State Rep Robert Sheheen hen Robert Sheheen left Ca mden, S.C.

to attend Duke University, he did not

expect to join a fraternity. He did

expect to work hard and leave a mark. Instead,

he did all three, and is still proving the va lue

of good, hard work.

Sheheen, Speaker of the House of Repre

sentatives in the South Carolina State House

from 1986 to 1994, was reelected last fall to

the position he has held for almost 20 years

-- Representative of District 52. Besides

serving as Speaker, Sheheen has served as

Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee

and the state's Advisory Commission on

Intergovernmental Affairs.

Public service was a natural fit for

Sheheen. His family, which served as one of

his greatest influences, was always invo lved

with public service. His fath er was a city

councilman, and served as Mayor of Camden

for 10 yea rs. His o ldest brother served as

chairman of local county govern ment.

It was this o lder brother that Sheheen

followed to Duke in 1961, though from th e

onset he made sure that he wou ld only follow

in those footsteps for so lo ng. Sheheen's

brother, Fred, had not been in a fraternity, but

he had served as editor-in-chi ef of the campus

newspaper. From the beginning, Robert

Sheheen knew th at he would have to make his

own mark, so he made a conscious effort not to

join th e newspaper staff.

Fo llowing his brother's advice, Sheheen

decided to rush . "Don' t go in with preco ncep

tions," he was told. "At leas t rush to meet other

people." As it turned out, he did find a frater

ni ty that he liked-- Pi Kappa Phi .

His penchant for invo lvement also led him

to join many of his Mu chapter brothers in

ca mpus politi cs. He eventua lly became presi

dent of th e student union.

Sheheen credits his political career to

Pi Kappa Phi. "The activity of Pi Kappa Phi in

campus life and campus politics was pretty

va luabl e in learning about people and how to

get along with people," he says. "Living in that

tight arrangement with others was good for me

as a Southern er from a sma ll town . I never

imagined that I would have friends from

Rochester, New York, and Dallas, Texas, and

San An to nio .. . The exposure to al l those

attitudes was good for me there, and it really

gave me a much broader vision of what I ought

to do in public life."

After graduating from Duke, Sheheen

attended law schoo l at the University of South

Carolina, where he was voted Outstanding

Class Member. After practicing law for two

years, he decided to run for the office he now

holds. On his first try, he lost by only 90 votes.

Two yea rs later, he ran aga in and los t by 40

votes. Fin all y, in 1976, he wo n and has served

in the House ever since, ga rnering several

Legislator of the Year awa rds from th e press

and several honorary degrees fro m universities.

In 1986, he became Speaker of the House,

serving co ntinuously in this positi on until last

fa ll when the Republi ca ns took the majority.

Sheheen credits the House with several lo ng

term contributions to better government during

his spea kership, including a more busin ess li ke

management approach, budget reform, and

passing the toughest ethics law in th e coun try.

Sheheen has seen many changes in politics

over the last two decades. "Po liti cs is a lo t

mea ner now," he says. "Campaigns are mean

and ugly. Isolated instances o f vo tes which

have no mea ning are explo ited and accusa

ti o ns are made."

Despite the negatives aspects, he sti ll enjoys

his job. His fo rmul a fo r success-- at Du ke, in

law school, and as a legislato r -- is sim ple:

"If you wo rk hard and you tell the truth ,

people respect you and beli eve what you say.

Then they tend to rely o n you because they

know that you've done your ho mework, you've

worked hard, and you're no t go ing to lie."

Sheheen currently has no pl ans to seek

any o ther po litical office. "My highest and best

use is being a legislator. Of course, I'd still

prefer to be the Speaker. .. . "

Maryland Delegate jim Rzepkowski

hen Jim Rzepkowski, 23, was elected

to the Maryland House of Delegates

in November, no t only was he the first

Republi ca n to ever win the 32nd Di trict, he

was also the youngest member of the House.

A 1993 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of

Maryland, Rzepkowski was one of the found

ing members of Eta Epsi lo n chapter. He was

install ed as Archon fo ll owing the chapter's

chartering and a lso served as Trea urer.

In September, just fo ur mo nths out of

coll ege, Rzepkowski annou nced his plans to

run fo r State Delegate. "The American dream

wasn't seem ing a rea li ty and I was frightened

wi th what was going on around me," he says.

"If our youth are our future, let's change the

di rectio n of our govern ment so we have a

chance for a future."

O n the cam paign tra il, Rzepkowski worked

tireless ly to meet the people who wou ld be his

consti tuents, trave li ng door to door and

waving signs. His fraternity brothers were

extremely helpful to his campaign. "The best

fee li ng was when younger guys from the

chapter, who didn't even know me, would

co me to campaign events. They

were all real supportive,"

Rzepkowski sa id .

A state-licensed insu rance

office manager, Rzepkowski's

days were often long during the

campaign. He would get up at 6

a.m. to wave his signs as people

drove to work, un ti l it was time for

him to go to work. Then after a

full day at the office, he

and h is supporters would

wave signs aga in fo r

hours before cam-

paigning door-to-

door u ntil dark. His

n igh ts were occu-

p ied by comm unity

events.

All of the hard

work paid off when

Rzepkowski received

the highest vote total

of any county candi

date in his district. He

gained 2,264 more

votes than the

ontinued on page 14

second-place candidate, and 2, 732 more votes

than the third-place candidate.

Despite his youth, Rzepkowski says that

the public respects him. "People haven't

reacted in a negative way. Many said my age

was an asset, because the governm ent needed

fresh voices."

He also enjoys the attention he gets. "I am

the youngest member-- that's how I am

introduced. It also means a lot of free publicity."

Rzepkowski feels that his youth does not

jeopardize his stature in the eyes of his fellow

delegates. "They don't hold it against me. Our

votes count the same, and at some time or

another, they are going to need my vote," he

says. "(Other representatives) are sometimes

envious of the press I get."

According to Rzepkowski, his Pi Kappa Phi

experience gave him drive and leadership

skills.

"College life is wonderful, my education

was beneficial, but what I do now is use the

skills I learned as a Pi Kappa Phi: the people

skills you learn by running an organization,"

he says. "I attribute my success thus far to my

Pi Kappa Phi experience. I joined for leader

ship opportunities, and that's what it gave me.

I am a firm believer in the Greek system."

Eta Epsilon chapter is certainly proud of

their esteemed brother. In a letter from on

behalf of the chapter, Scott Rosenbaum wrote,

"Just as he worked to make Pi Kappa Phi a

reality here on campus, we can be certain that

Brother James Rzepkowski will apply the same

devotion to building a better Maryland."

For now, Rzepkowski says that getting

through this legislative session is his first

priority, then he plans to run for reelection.

And after that?

"Well, I like that building across the street

(the Governor's Mansion). It would be a great

place to live! "

Kentucky State Senator Denny Nunnelley

lthough las t fall marked Denny

unnelley's first bid for the Kentucky

state Senate, he is no stranger to public

life. Ever since he left Morehead State in 1974,

Denny unnelley has been in the public eye.

unnelley began serving the people of

Woodford Coun ty, Kentucky 20 years ago,

when he began working at the Sheriffs Depart

ment, shortly after finishing college. In 1981 ,

he was elected Sheriff, an office he held until

being elected County Judge in 1985. unnelley

was reelected in 1989, then decided to take his

knowledge of county government to the state

level.

When the votes were tabulated in last fall's

election, unnelley had kept his wi nning record

intact. Despite all the electio ns he's faced over

the last 15 years, he has never lost.

unnelley serves Kentucky in the 30th

Senatorial District, consti tuted of six counties

and a portion of a seventh, and representing a

more than 100,000 people.

unnelley's primary goals are related to

how counties can work together to become

more efficient.

"I believe that the counti es should join

efforts on shared services," he says. "In the

past, there has not been enough push fo r loca l

governments to work together. Local govern

ments are top-heavy in admi nistration. They

must join hands to become more effective,

tearing down the meaning of county bound-. " anes.

A former Archon of Delta Eta, unnelley

ranks several of his fraternity brothers as

among his best friends. "As a matter of fact," he

said, "I talked to two yesterday and o ne today."

Public life is also a natural fit for

unnelley. "I have always taken a stance and

been active," he says. "!love meeting people

and shaking hands."

Postscript: Do you or one of your alumni brothers hold a public office? Whether you've been appointed or elected, we'd like to hear about it.

service to Pi Kappa Phi is substantial;

their contributions of time,

program to honor CEO Durward

Owen upon his retirement after 35 years of

service. To date nearly $500,000 has been

donated or pledged to the Owen In itiative.

The outstanding Owen Retirement Dinner

and Fund-raising Roast was one of the most

memorable evenings in the 90-year history

of the Fraternity.

The Foundation awarded $500 scholar

ships to 12 Pi Kapp Scholars last year, as well

as almost $20,000 in grants to deserving

students.

In addition, the Foundation made a

major contribution to the ongoing cost of

Pi Kappa Phi's Leadership Consultant program.

These five outstanding young men travel to our

140 chapters throughout the year. The Founda

tion also supported the cost of Pi Kappa Phi's

premier leadership event, Pi Kapp College.

the Fraternity's innovative education program,

the Journey. The Journey is the centerpiece of

Pi Kappa Phi's effort to help build better men.

The educational tracks will dea l with scholar

ship, values and service during the member's

freshman year. During the sophomore and

junior year, the focus will be on leadersh ip and

personal development, and seniors wi ll

concentrate on career and life planning.

These are bold new initiatives to challenge

and inspire the individual member, the

chapter, and the entire national Fratern ity.

The Journey will be unveiled in August at

Designated Pi Kapp scholarship funds honor brothers

ne of the best ways to

support the Foundation is

through designated schol

arship funds. Throughout

the years, many members,

family, and friends have

made generous contributions to the

Foundation to form the corpus of a

designated scholarship fund.

In some instances, a single dona

tion is made while in others, donations

are made over a period of time, by a

number of people.

To establish a designated scholar

ship fund , the Foundation asks that

donors set a goal to reach a corpus of

$10,000 or more, which may be reached

over a period of time. The reason is that

$10,000 will produce an annual income

of $500 or more for a scholarship.

On the following page, we highlight

three of the many designated scholar

ship funds. Two of these scholarship

funds were created to honor brothers

Paul Green and AI Brown, who both

joined the Chapter Eternal last year.

The creation of a designated

scholarship fund is an extraordinary

way to honor a beloved member of the

Fraternity and to be certain that his

legacy to Pi Kappa Phi is remembered

in perpetuity.

BY TED SCHARFE TEl

EXECUTIVE VICE P RESIDENT

The Pau I Green Memorial Scholarship

aul Green, who joined the

Chapte r Eternal in December

1994, was the 1,297th initia te

of Florida

(Alpha Epsi

lon) . He was

intimatel y

invo lved with

the rebuilding

of the chapter

and remained

deeply inter

es ted in its welfare following gradua

tion .

Paul served the national Fraternity

as Director of West Coast Expansion.

His efforts led to the estab lishment

of severa l chapters in Ca li fornia . Pau l

assisted the development of Duke

(Mu) and was servi ng as "house dad"

for the recently rechartered chapter at

L.S.U. (Gam m a Iota) wh en he was

tragically killed in an automobile

accident.

Paul's many friends from Alpha

Epsilon and Gam ma Iota and his

fam ily have established the Paul Green

Memoria l Scholarship for students at

both Florida and L.S.U.

In the words of one donor: "It's

so sad that such an outstanding young

man has been taken from our midst.

This contribution will help perpetuate

his memory. Paul would light up a

room with his enthusiasm and love of

life. In some small way, my wife and I

want to keep that spirit alive."

The AI Brown Memorial Scholarship

I Brown, Beta Alpha #161,

joined the Chapter Eternal in

1994. AI was an extraordinary

member of the Fraternity, and his

mark on both the chapter at ew

jersey Insti tute ofTechnology and

the national Fraternity is legendary.

Indeed, his efforts over the years

earned him the Fraternity's highest

honor, Mr. Pi Kappa Phi , in 1988.

Among his many accomp lishments, Al

is perhaps best

known for

emceeing the

Beta Alpha

Founders' Day

celebration.

At Beta

Alpha's

Founders' Day

celebration last year, a designated

scholarship in Al's memory was

initiated. The objective is to raise a

corpus of $25,000. Pledges are being

accepted over three years in the

amounts of $161 and $483 or more

depending on the member's circum

stances.

The Harman Scholarship

ldred Harman is an initiate of

Iowa State (Alpha Omicron).

Among his Pi Kappa Phi accom-

plishments are serving on the Alpha

Omicron Housing Corporation and

the Foundation's Board ofTrustees.

Harman played a major role in the

construction of the new chapter

house in Ames, Iowa.

As part of his interest in the

chapter at Iowa tate, Harman wanted

to create a $500-a-year scholarship for

a student in the Agriculture chool. He

contributed $10,000 over a period of

time to the Foundation. He also wa

instrumental in suggesting that these

funds be used to buy a 30-year U.

Treasury Bond, which pays 8.5%

interest.

Eldred and

Donna

Harman know

that the

scholarship

they estab

lished will be

fully funded

well into the next century.

For more information about the designated clwlarsilip

program, please write Ted charfenstein at 289 outh

treet, Rocl?port, MA 01966 or call (508} 546-2214.
