It's really hard to believethat the Fall running season hasbegun and all the lime devoted totraining will culminate in Fall marathons around the world. Taconicmembers are planning to run inVenice. Dublin. Philadelphia.Washington. D.C.. DutchessCounty and New York City, justto name a few. I have run in a fewmarathons (six in the last year) and

want to share a bit of informationand inside scoop with you:•Always bring a very large garbage bag with you. This can serve as a matbetween you and the ground at the starting line, or as a raincoat in case ofshowers, or as a windbrcaker if it is cold. It is a good idea to startcollecting old clothes now that you can take to the start to use as "throwaways."♦If you are among those who have difficulty drinking on the run. bring astraw and use it to sip the water or Galorade or whatever. Remember tofind out what liquid replacement will be used during your race and try itout before the big day,•The most important thing to remember is the location of the Port-o-sans.In New York, the best ones are located on First Avenue under the 59thStreet Bridge. At the Dutchess marathon, the fields are the best place togo. and there are lots of them. At Marine Corps, there are lines at the startto use the facilities, but the finish line portables are great.

Good luck to everyone, and remember to wear the TACONICsinglet with pride, because we are all proud of you!

Club members have been busy cross training and doing variedthings this summer, Denise Lutrick won her weight class in Augusta,Georgia at the first-ever Women's National Amateur Boxing Championships. Fred Reger did the Triathlon in Falmouth. Keith Panzer completed the Vermont 100 mile run in 25 hours. Alyssa and Bill l.ifrieri areexpecting their second child. At the Empire Stale Games, variousconbinations of Doug Miller. Ken Martin. Ken Pfaff. Nick Caswell.Justin Kclley and David Goldberg collected both Gold and Silver in the4X400 and 4X800 relays,

1 f I have forgotten someone and their event, please let me knowso that I can mention it next month. By the way. welcome home fromBelgium. Quinn family.

The Masters Challenge was held in Ridgefield this year andTaconic had a great turn-out. Thanks to the team captains; DebbieKenney, Melanie Benvenue. Scott Abercrombie and Rich Nash for all thephone calls and reminders.

The 1997 Putnam County ClassicBy Fred & Christine Reger

The 25th anniversary of the Putnam County Classic was held on Friday, July 4th and included the largest field of runners inmany years. On a relatively cool morning there were 351 finishers. Leading the way was Scott Brown in a time of 42:18 for 1st placeoverall (3rd time in a row!). 2nd overall male was Antonio Alves with a time of 42:58. 3rd went to Phil Richey in 43:35 (Phil isturning 40 soon, so look out masters!). On the women's side, Alyssandra Lynch was back with a 1st place finish in a time of 49:18.2nd went to Nora Sema in 52:33. 3rd was Barbara Brittan in 54:31. John Albanese carried The Flag once again and finished in 54:17in breezy conditions to carry on a long standing tradition.

The day would not have been complete without the food, refreshments, and music, which most people stayed to enjoy. Theevent is growing each year, and we hope to have more community involvement and more runners in the years to come. We also hopeto have more amenities and valuable prizes next year, so tell a friend about the race! Together we can bring the number of runners upto what it once was. (You can all help by Just passing out flyers in the months prior to the race.)

We extend our thanks and appreciation to all of the volunteers and sponsors, also to Mahopac Central School, the PutnamCounty Sheriffs Department, and the Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department.

Dear laconic Road Runners,I am very thankful for your generosity in selecting

This summer, I am working as a lifeguard at FDRState Park I have been dedicating my early mornings toprepare myself for this coming Cross Country season. Iam currently running 50 miles a week, and I am on trackto be running about 75 miles a week by August 15.

Thanks again for selecting me as this year'sScholarship winner, and I hope to volunteer at some roadraces to help repay the club for their kindness.

SEVEN HILLS, Version 5.0"Homeric!" A very descriptive word which I first

recall hearing as it was uttered by the character actor BanyFitzgerald in "The Quiet Man". The word aptly applies to theepic achievement of the eleven Taconics who undertook thelatest version of The Challenge of the Seven Hills on JulyS E V E N T H .

This year's "King of the Hills" is Mark Lovitz. Markmanaged to be first to the top of six out of seven of the hills. His perfect score was spoiled by Joe Jeraci who edged Markout on the last hill - up Teatown Road. Joe, of course, endedup in second place having scored six second place finishesbehind Mark. The rest of us muddled along behind the two ofthem.

Three-peating in the Women's division is LeeSaroken. Facing no challengers, the 1997 "Queen of theHills" won in what is known in the boxing world as a walkover. but with a slight difference. The difference is that evenwith no challengers Lee had to complete the full complementof mountainous terrain to claim her prize.

Once again we were fortunate to have volunteers tohelp us through. Many thanks to Sue Menz, Rudi Einhorn andJustin Kelley. And..a special nod to Justin who had to dealwith a flat tire on his Jeep near the top of Arcady Road. Oh,not to forget our sole spectator, Brian Wheaton.

The awards and T-shirts for this event will be

presented at the October monthly meeting at Teatown.See you there. Myles O'RhoJe.s

T R R C H a l f M a r a t h o nBy Greg Diamond

Surprise! - We floated a trial balloon in the form of a half marathon at the Pump House Saturday (8/9/97) morning. Fifteen laconicMen (not on purpose) ran the double out and back course - flat (mostly), shaded and soft on the feet. 7 water and Gatorade stops andaccurately measured. Maybe it will become an annual event.

Sixty seconds. Just one quick minute. But so muchseems to happen in that single lap of the track. Four hundredmeters stretched out.. .way out.. .into four seemingly non-connected one hundred meter races, each with their ownindividual identity.

Taking the baton in the third leg of the 4X400 meterrelay and I'm thirty meters behind. Take off. Close the gap toten meters by the end of the first hundred. Yelling (to myselO"Whoa! Whoa! Slow down, slow down!"

Second hundred: talking "easy, easy, just follow,fo l low. Lots o f t ime. Time. Save i t . Save i t . " H i t the two-hundred meter mark, flowing around the curve, leaning in.Feeling like a million dollars. Flying. Flying.

Then, I'm on him. Not wanting to pass. Screamingin my head, "Not yet. Not now. Not on the curve. Not now!"But then, he chops his stride and I move out, forced to goaround, or run up and over him. "Feel great. Feel great,"cascading in my mind. My stride feels long, really long, likeI'm Just swallowing meters and meters of track. Fying, flying.

The final hundred: and I swear unto you, when Iround that curve, hit the final straight, and leave my opponentlight years behind, I swear I feel a hurricans force wind whipme in the face. My forward progress seems to stop. My legs, which only seconds ago possessed the strength of PaulBunyan, are reduced to spaghetti.

Form? Hah! 1 swear I'm almost running in place, knees kicking high toward my chest, toes turned out, way out,in some bizarre imi tat ion of Ronald McDonald 's walk.

People must be laughing at me. I'm laughing at me!Why am I performing like a street mime? Why can't

I run? Oh, if only that wind would just stop. And then itdoes. The wall of wind appears to simply burst before me andI'm moving again. Still mimicking some caricature of mynatural running self, but moving, steadily moving.

Then it's done. The baton is passed. Bend over.Gasp. Gasp. Gasp.. .Walk it off. Walk it off. Piercingscreams directed at our anchor leg, "You keep digging!" Howam I even breathing? But it's done. Done.

A n d w e w o n ! Ye a h Ta c o n i c !Then 1 tell someone about the wind, the last hundred

meters, the hurricane wind. They point to the flags circlingt h e s t a d i u m . S t i l l . N o m o v e m e n t . N O W I N D !

They smile. "Welcome to the 400," they say. Smileagain. They've felt that wind themselves, I guess.

Note: I'd like to thank the other members of my team: JoeBencivenga, Ken Martin, and Doug Miller, for bringing homethe gold for Taconic. And to all my other TRRC buddies whohelped make it a very memorable week-end, thank you. Nextyear we set a curfew, okay?!

B o i l e r m a k e r :20 Years and Counting

By Justin Kelley

On Sunday, July 13, the people of Utica, N.Y., held alittle party. Actually, it was a living, breathing, moving, serpentine street party of 9,400 runners that charged its waythrough this normally subdued town.

The runners, from first place Joesph Kimani ofKenya (42:54 - 15K) to last finishers Charles Zuis of SchuylerLake (2:22:22), wound their way over a scenic and rollingcourse to the finish, which was located adjacent to awarehouse for major sponsor, Saranac Beers. The finishlocation - just coincidence? Or Divine Inspiration? All 1 knowis a record 7,661 finishers crossed that line on their way tosampling countless kegs of free Adirondack Amber, makingthis the largest 15K in the U.S.

And the volunteer support: simply otherwordly! 1 dobelieve that every soul living in the greater Utica area whowas not running was lining the course offering water, sponges, ice and their ferociously vocal support. Spectators were linedfour and more deep in some sections. It was wonderfullyoverwhelming.

The amenities: from the strangely eclectic goody-bagfilled with everything except a t-shirt (Saranac Beer mug, pasta, loaf of white bread, peanuts, hard candy, nite-Iight, etc.)to the savory pre-race pasta dinner, to the post-race fruit, sandwiches, bagels, cookies, pizza and beer. Everything wasfirst class, including the band. Well, especially the band.

This was an event to remember.

Women Running

The Taconic Womens Masters Team is in 3" place and the Veterans Team is in I*' place! I We ran the ClubTeam Championship on July 20* . Believe it or not, it was a beautiful COOL morning. Actually, it was aGreat day to run a race. We had a delicious picnic in Central Park (we were the envy of all the other clubs). Thanks to all the people who pitched in to help! A special thanks to Margie for staying behind andperforming the boring job of watching the table, food and personal belongings!! Thank you to theE>eitricks for the delicious cookies mie!) The results for the Women were: Nancy Venegas 32:38,Ddjra Kenney 33:48, Beth Anne Cincotta 34:16, Lee Saroken 36:03, Nancy Young 36:40, Carol Hanson37:25, Kate Glynn 37:34, Melanie Benvenue 38:12, Greta Olsson 39:39, Marci Smith 42:34, DeborahHartstein 44:23, Kathleen D'Ottavio 45:00, Mary Fields 47:30, and Peg Meisler 1:14:25.

The team results were: The TRRC's Mens Open team came in 6* place, the Womens Open team came in10* place. Mens Masters finished in place, Womens Masters took 6 place, and the Veterans Mensteam came in 3"* place and lastly, the Womens Veterans team took 1* !!

On August 10''*, the Womens Master Team and the Womens Veterans Team travelled down and over toRoosevelt Island to run a lOK. For us Northern Westchesterites, who are used to lots of trees and coolertemperatures, this was a very sunny, hot course! Finishers were Debra Kenney 44:39, Nancy Young 47:17,Melanie Benvenue 48:22, C:arol Hanson 48:25, Greta Olsson 54:00 and Kathleen D'Ottavio 59:25.

I would like to wish a special to Barbara Brittan. We miss you. I also

wanted to mention that our President, Lee Saroken, is running great! You would think with all she has todo that her running would be suffering. Not So!!

ALSO, there hasn't been an article in Taconic Life about the Mens Masters Team. I happen to know thatthe Captain of the TRR Mens Masters Team has been woridng a lot of hours (and 1 mean a lot!!!!!!!!) so,because there has been no article you might not be aware of the exciting race for first place that is going onin the New York Chy Grand Prix between the Taconic Masters Team and the Staten Island Athletic Club. The word I hear is that the SI AC wants the trophy for first place this year. The TRR Mens Masters teamhas won it for a bunch of years now. I believe that TRR Masters are still in first place after RooseveltIsland lOK, but it is close!! We are all real happy that Hiil Richey is turning 40 in September!!!!!

The next NYRR Grand Prix Race for both men and women is the Staten Island Half Marathon. It will takeplace on September 21". Unfortunately, it also happens to be the same day as the Dutchess Classic.

North County Trailway to Stretch Out on Dec. 31According to a recent article in the Gannett Newspapers, construction that "started in April is proceeding quickly on the

North County Trailway, formerly the Putnam Division Railroad, and Yorktown officials say they're looking forward to the Dec. 31schedu led fin ish . "

The 5.1 mile Yorktown secion of the 30 mile trail will run from Hanover Street, across the Croton Reservoir via the oldrailway trestle, and tie into a bike path on Route 134 by Kitchawan Preserve. The project is being funded by $2.1 million from thestate and federal governments.

Underground passageways under Croton Heights Road and Old County Way will make the trail safer for runners, walkersand bikers.

TRRC encourages members to lend their support to the expanded trailways. This one will add some great, safe mileage tothe Pumphouse run.
