14TH AUGUST

BE THERE OR BE

ftuPpettn tu yuur tne vot- rJuruu !

We have all said many times on the air I'11 send my QSL card via the bureau and with any luck it will arrive irabout a yea.r then what happens the card that you really need for that award or even the DXCC !!I would just like to give you a few facts and points which in the end will help , you as one of my clients, ttunderstand how things work from this end of the operation, and also help me to do the Qsl Sub-Managen jobmore efticientlyAli the world's Amateur Radio Qsl Card Bur€au"s send their cards for the UK cail areas to the Radio Societlof Great Britain QSL Bureau, located at Radio Society of GrEat Britain headquarters at Lamba House, PotterrBar, Hertfordshire. As these cards arrive they are then sorted into their Sub Managers box for that particulacall - sign, these sub manager$ number around 100 when the box is full with around 2,5AA tc 3,500 cards ireach box, it is despatched by parcel post to the Sub-Manager's address and in most ca$e a box arrives every €lo 10 weeks. When that b*x arrives at the Sub-Managers address, the following has to be done with the all cards as they arrno kind of order and in my case I wilt"have cards'for GMO's aid lnmvl0's , normally these are in their-owrbundle so not a very big job to find and sort those. The work really starts now and the house can at times looftvery much like a battle field with odd cards here and rubber bands, all over the placel Once they are in call-sigrorder they need to be sorted into call-sign first letter order by this I mean all the GMOA's , GMOB's and so onup to GMOL's in my case. I use an alphabetical folding file which allows me to put the cards in there owrtolder *o the letter A to Z. Once they are in this order I then remove them to the trusty plastic shopping bagsready for the next sorting stage. This will be the final stage of sorting when each plastic bag of cards is thersorted into second letters again using my alphabetical folding file, which mean I end up with cards forGMOAB's and so on up to GM0LB' at the end of the second letter sorting stage it is very easy to sort theninto call-sign order to reach this stage takes between 8 and 12 hours in total, I try to right offa complete da1nnd the job is finished, well almost. !!From some dark cupboard that no one uses very much or often, lbr that matter, I bring in to operation the twoDoxes of customers envelopes which over 300 and a total of around 700 envelopes which need both storing andrcrting into alphabetical order ready for this last stage of checked that there are envelopes for the cards whichhave been sorted, over half do not have envelopes so these have to be stored afterwards for around 12 months.rut those who do have envelopes are the lucky ones, as then all that is needed is to put them in their envelopesmd put them in the post-box , just one last thing to do when putting in the card, put a note in with them sayingrow many envelopes that call-sign has left at the same time updating my database. The other reasort for thisnote with my address on , it also aids the post office to return any envelopes to me, should that call-sign havenoved house and forgotten to inform me. Last and not least of all use some sticky tape to seal the envelopes asihe sticky stuffdoes not always work having been stored for a good while and the complete story starts all overnhen the parcel force delivery man hits the door bell around six in the morning in around six to I weeks time!lt is rewarding Really73 De Fred GMOALS Sub-Manager for GM0AAA ta GMQLZZ MM0AAA totvfrvIOLZZFlere are a few small hints and tips which I think will help most Qsl Sub-Managersl. Please write your full call-sign on the front & back of your Envelopes.Z. Write the Call-Sign on the back of the card to whom it is going [Saves turning them over ]l. Oniy use one first class stamp on each envelope{ Only mark the last envelope I saves sorting ]i. Only deposit a maximum of 4 envelopes of the right size to take the normal QSL card [This saves stcrage]5. when you stick the stamp on your envelopes remember that the flap will lose it stickiness over a period o1:ime so leave enough room so that tape can be used to reseal the envelope.I. Should you be using a special Event's Call-Sign of a Club Call -Sign could I ask if you could inform theJENDER to put YOUR OWN Cail-Sign on the card as well this will help with sorting time as wcll as finding:he owners of unclaimed cards [Ve GBaWCH Via GMO ???1 as some will {ind their way to your Sub-Managarnd not ths GB calt-sign Sub-Manager.t. Should you find some cards for another Call -Sign in your envelope by mistake please return them withIOUR next lot of Envelopes to your Sub-Manager. Cheers ....

PORT SETON GALA (GBfiGPS)

Flaming June they say, well I hate to say that must be a figment of someone's imagination..whydo I say that !! Well the Gala Day goes something like this. There was I awake nice and early, aftera Club Night too, and looking out of the window was pleased to see that it was dry. I then had anice leisurely breakfast before heading down to the Links to meet Tom GM4LRU and CallumLM|DZ,S to set up the tent..how far did I get, about 10 yards before the "heavens opened" andunfortunately it stayed that way tbr most of the day.

Apart from the weather I felt that it was a successful day as quite a few people eame and visitedthe Station, asked a lot of questions and some even took away some of the prepared literature thatwe had done on Amateur Radio. I even managed to get another Novice Recruit for my next classstarting in August !!!!

At the end of the day we had a total of 63 contacts,, managing to work the following countries :

ONBelgium I ON4CAS YE Canada r, 3)C.{EAS Canary Is I EA8/DIARZEIEire I EI9CJG England 4 G3UCE UA European Russia 6 RAIAVP OH Finland 1 OH2MT F France IF/GM3UCH DL Germany 11 DLZHRT 4X Israel | 47ADX I Itaty 5 IKSNKQ 9H Malta I 9HIFBSPA Netherlands I PA3DAY LA Norway I LA2IR CT Portugal I CT1APR GM Scotland llGM3BQA OM Slovakia 1 OM3CFK EA Spain ? Thanks to everyone who provided the equipment but with a special thanks to Callum, Lv andEuan for providing the 72' x 12' tent to help keep us all dry on the day.

That's it then another good Amateur Radio selling event passed....
