Keynote Address – South Africans who have
made it LARGE Internationally –Trevor Jones
This is not about blowing our collective trumpet.
You need to know how they did in the beginning. You
don’t want to know about the big concerts in front of
20,000 people with 3 tour bus’s hauling 5 tons of
equipment round the States. You want to hear about
the 1980’s VW Bus which slept two but had 5 in it.
The driver was the roadie, the tour manager, the
merchandise lady and the accountant
simultaneously.
That’s what we’ll tell you.
Trevor Jones
International Film and Television
Composer
“David Bowie, Sting, U2, Sinead
O'Connor, Charlotte Church,
Britney Spears and Elvis Costello
have all worked with him, Film and
television have also benefited from his
pioneering work with the fusion of
acoustic and electronic mastery over
the past four decades. From Excalibur,
The Dark Crystal, Runaway Train,
Angel Heart, Mississippi Burning,
Last of the Mohicans through to In
the Name of the Father and Notting
Hill, amongst many others – Jones’
scores are the stuff of legend.

Interactive Lecture - Making money from those
hits
Historically, a professional songwriter's most
reliable customer had been the major label
recording artist. Whether they landed an album
track, a b-side or a coveted single, songwriters
based in
Cape Town, Durban or Jozi could rely on a steady
stream of work.
Today, there are fewer major label releases selling
far less than ever before, yet, many would argue that
it's never been a better
Time to be a songwriter. From jingle-writing, to
scoring films, writing television themes and
collaborating with artists around the world, the
opportunities are endless. Industry professionals will
discuss the various ways songwriters are thriving in
the new music economy

BRANDS ROCK
Lecture - Branding Without Bullshit: Building Social Media-
Proof Bands/Brands.
When corporate brands combine with music and the movies, the
results can be spectacular, both creatively and monetarily. While
major artists routinely extend their brand into clothing, perfumes
and other types of licensing arrangements, now emerging artists
may grow their own brands as they play an important role in
brand marketing campaigns. In addition, audio has become a
vital element of a company's brand identity, affording additional
opportunities for artists to participate one more business aspect of
the music business.
Consumers don’t believe marketing. We believe our experiences.
Our friends’ experiences. Even complete strangers’ experiences.
In an always-on, social media-enabled world, consumer
experiences
– And consumers’ willingness to share them in the moment – can
make or break a brand. For brands, it’s not what you say but
what you do. No longer can brands hide behind a façade of
artifice. A big
Idea and a break-through campaign may generate buzz, but is it a
big idea that could be slapped on to any other brand in the
category? If so, the rewards will be fleeting.
Cape Town is an incubator for the quirky and creative. It’s also
an epicentre for authenticity, with a culture not afraid to call
bullshit. We’ll explore what it takes to build a brand with the
authenticity to
Sustain and flourish in the cynical, exposed world of social
media-empowered consumers: the rewards, but also the risks, and
the challenges you can expect to confront along the way.
Can we make cash out of brands and how?
Bands have value, how do you monetise it?
What can you offer the brand as a band?
Are you well enough rehearsed?
How did Parlotones get so much exposure on SABC 3?

In 1997, Stephen "Sugar" Segerman set up a website, called
'The Great Rodriguez Hunt', with the intention of finding any
information about the mysterious US musician of 'Cold Fact'
fame. In the same year Brian Currin established 'Climb Up
On My Music', a tribute site to the life and works of
Rodriguez.
In 1998, when Rodriguez was discovered, alive and well and
living in Detroit, the search was over and those two websites
were combined into one central online repository for all
information about Rodriguez.
Brian Currin will be holding a one-hour workshop on the
