From the Desk of Father Ed:

Dear Parishioners,

In our Gospel today, “Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the Kingdom.’” Then he went on to tell them to “Sell their belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy.” One of the themes in this weekend’s Gospel is readiness, that is, be ready because you do not know the day or the hour when the Son of Man will come.

Jesus gives us two examples of a disciple’s readiness in the Gospel. The first is the servant who waits in the master’s house for the master’s arrival from a wedding. The master of the house relied on his servant to be on watch for the master’s return so that he could unlock the bar from inside the door and allow the master to enter. If the servant was not watchful or fell asleep the master would be left outside and exposed to robbers and thieves. The master of the house could come at any time, any hour of the night and so the servant must be vigilant and watch for his master’s return. Jesus tells us that if the servant is faithful the master will reward him and “have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them.”

The second example that Jesus gives us of readiness is the thief who breaks into the house. If the owner of the house knew the day and the hour the thief was coming he would not have let his house be broken into. No one likes to have their house robbed and their personal items stolen. It is a frightful experience to discover that someone was in your house and your possessions stolen. If we knew that someone was planning a robbery we would certainly notify the police and they would be arrested. Jesus tells us that he is like a thief who comes in the night and we don’t know when he will come. He tells us this not to frighten us but to warn us of the need to be prepared. No one knows when the Lord will call us from this life and so we have to always be vigilant and ready for when he comes.

Be prepared because Jesus comes like a thief in the night! “Sell your belongings and give alms.” Store up treasure in heaven. “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” If we have few belongings here on earth and detached from possessions, then we will not fear even if someone were to break into our homes. The Gospel invites us to be ready and free of the world’s attachments so that when He comes we will be prepared for him. The Father promises us a kingdom, so keep vigilant each day till He comes for us and invites us to the banquet where He will wait on us.

Our Lady Queen of Peace, pray for us,

Father Ed,

Administrator

Parish Outreach

“Whatever you did for one of these least

brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Mt

25:40)

In November of last year our parish opened a food pantry. It has been very successful do to the continuous support of numerous parishioners. Since the opening of the food pantry we have helped over 50 families in the neighborhood. Because of the need in our area we are starting a new ministry of parish outreach. The ministry will consist of a prayer group that will meet monthly and focus on visiting the needy in their homes. If you would like to be part of this ministry or need more information please contact Elenor Reilly at 973-827-2420.

Second Collection Aug. 13th & 14th

Next weekend we will have a guest speaker from The Missionary Society of St. Theresa of the Little Flower (Theresian Fathers), a religious community of priests and brothers in the Diocese of Wa in Ghana. The apostolate of the Theresian Fathers is Evangelization and Education in the most rural parts of Ghana. Rural, meaning, they have no portable drinking water and no electricity. The children have to walk several miles each day to school in a nearby town and back and usually do so, many a time, on empty stomach. We find it our calling to reach out and journey with such children and provide for their needs in whatever ways we can.

This year there are two main projects for the course of this Mission Appeal; one is to build a school for the children, and the second is to provide one nutritious meal a day for the over 800 kids we work with in an after school program in northern Ghana. The construction of the school will cost an estimated $150,000 to build and furnish. All funds from this Mission Co-op in your parish will go directly these two causes. In order to realize these goals, we count on your generosity. Please be as generous as you are able.
