will be reviewed at the beginning of today’s class.

Alliteration

• The repetition of consonants at the start of words.• E.g. “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.”• (Remember a consonant is a letter of the alphabet that is

not a vowel.)

Assonance• The repetition of vowel sounds at the beginning of words,

or within words.• E.g. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

The early bird catches the worm.• (Five letters of the alphabet are vowels: A, E, I, O, U.)

Hyperbole

• Deliberate exaggeration.• E.g. “It was packed to the rafters.”

Onomatopoeia

• Words similar to the sounds they are describing.• E.g. Beep, boom, clap, meow, moo, oink, splash & zoom.

Simile• Comparisons using the words “like” or “as.”• E.g. As strong as an ox.

As white as snow.As black as coal.As light as a feather.

Activity 1:

• Fill in the missing lyrics in your copy of the song “Solitaire.”

• When you have done this, work in pairs to identify the poetic device that has been used in the chorus.
