EIGHT PROTECTORS

The sublime Conqueror said that if one recites this prayer when ongets up,one will achieve all one’s aims that day; if one recites it before going to sleep,one will have good dreams; if one recite it as one enters into battle, one willbe victorious in every respect; if one recites it when one begins a project,one’s plans will succeed; if one recites it daily one’s lifespan, success, fameand wealth will increase, one will accomplish one’s aims exactly as one hasplanned and find perfect happiness; all negative actions and obscurations willbe purified and all one’s desires for the highest temporal and ultimate happi-ness will be fulfilled..This is a great garland of jewels which rose out of the oceanic mind of Jam-pel Gyepai Dorje (Mipham Rinpoche) at a perfect time, the third day of thefifth month, a Sunday, in the Fire Monkey year, at an auspicious moment whenthe constellation of the Victor was dominant.

Appendix ADescription of the Tashi Prayer

I will speak briefly on this text. Shakyamuni Buddha taught what is known as theSutra of Auspicious Words. This prayer consists of the names of eight different buddhas, fol-lowed by the names of eight bodhisattvas. Then there are the names of eight female bod-hisattvas and of eight dharma, protectors. These are all outlined in this prayer. The teachingsof the Lord Buddha tell us to recite these thirty-two names of enlightened beings. By callingupon the names of those thirty-two enlightened beings, we can generally bypass or get rid ofall the obstacles in this lifetime, whatever they are. Even if, you experience difficulty, lack ofsuccess, or have an illness; whatever negativities you face are purified and you are able topass through that kind of problem and become successful in anything you wish. That is thetemporary benefit of this prayer. The absolute benefit is especially for someone who is prac-ticing Dharma. Any obstacles that might prevent realization can be dispelled by this prayer;therefore, it is strongly recommended by the Buddha for practitioners to recite this prayer atthe beginning of their practice.

Sometimes you may face dangerous situations, such as the threat of death by variouselements or by animals, or any sort of threat to your life. If such a circumstance arises, if you,instantly recite this prayer, you will definitely be able to remove that obstacle. Even if youhave bad dreams bother you at night, if you wake up and recite this prayer, that bad dreamwill instantaneously disappear. If you read this prayer once or twice every day without miss-ing a single day, you will increase all positive effects and accomplish any goal. Also whenyou die, if you have recited this prayer on a daily basis in this lifetime, you can eliminate theillusory state of bardo and obtain enlightenment in the bardo.

The actual sutra, which is much longer than this prayer, was condensed into its presentform by Mipham, Rinpoche. Since he composed this prayer, Lama Mipham, along with hisdisciples, as well as Jamgon Kongtrul the Great (the first Jamgon Kongtrul) and his followershave all recited this prayer frequently throughout their lives. The modern teachers who havevisited the West such as Kalu Rinpoche, Dezhung Rinpoche and all present Eminences—havealways recited this prayer at the beginning of their trip wherever they have travelled. Becauseof this strong tradition, I would like to request all our students to do this prayer as part of theirdaily practice. I have been wanting to adopt this prayer in our students’ practice for sometime, but for different reasons we could not make it available until now. Now I am introducingthis prayer, which I personally feel is very auspicious, to the general community for the firsttime.

One of the particular reasons I want all of you to do this prayer is that I and otherteachers are constantly being told by our students about losing jobs or not being able to decidean a career or not finding a new job and various obstacles of this kind. When I am asked tohelp people in this situation, I immediately recite this prayer for that disciple, for his or herachievement of a good life. It would be wise for students to recite the same prayer wheneverthey face problems related to livelihood, such as finding a job.

Appendix BThe Male Bodhisattvas

1. Manjushri (Skt. Manjushri, Tib. Jampal Yang)Manjushri is the embodiement of knowledge (prajna).He is usually depicted with a sword in his right handrepresenting cutting through ignorance and a lotus inhis left which holds the Prajnaparamita sutra (the pri-mary text on emptiness which is the true nature of re-ality.)

2. Vajrapani (Skt. Vajrapani, Tib. Dorje Channa,Chinese, Jin Gang Shou). Vajrapani is one of the mainBuddhist protectors. He is usually represented as darkblue and having a vajra in the palm of his hand in hispeaceful form. However, he is usually depicted in hiswrathful form where he is dark blue and holds a vajrain his right hand in the warning mudra and a noose inhis left. He also usually is winged in this form.

3. Chenrezig (Skt. Avalokitshvara, Tib. Chenrezig,Chinese, Kyin Ying).Chenrezig is the embodiment of compassion.Chenrezig emanated from a tear drop of the Amitabhabuddha when he saw the needles suffering of sentientbeings. Deities are obviously beyond being either maleof female so Chenrezig in Tibet is a male, andChenrezig (Kyin Ying) is a female.

4. Maitreya (Skt. Maitreya, Tib. Jampa) Maitreya wasa bodhisattva at the time of the Buddha and became aBuddha later. He is depicted sitting in a chair (theroyal mudra) and holding a lotus with a stupa emerg-ing out of it. Maitreya will be the next (5th) Buddha ofour era.

5. Ksita-garbha (Skt. Ksitagarbha, Tib. Sai �ingpo,Chinese Di Zang Wang).Ksitagarbha is green and is depicted as a seated firgurewith a lotus bearing a naga tree. He is the god of deathwho took a vow to help all sentient beings until all thehell realms were emptines out.

Incidentially, Tulku Damcho did the Ksita-garbha empowerment last year.

According to Wikipedia Ksitagarbha was depicted inthe movie Crouching Tiger as the Chan master whocarries a staff confronting the boy in a hotel whichrepresents the hell realm.
