    Your Commitment

Our Commitment1. First Sergeants and commanders have already committed to

resiliency in your own military lives as observed by your

military success; are you just as committed in family

    resiliency?

    2. As you are presented with the resiliency skill sets taught byyour unit MRTs it is your commitment that will gain the trust

of the rest of your unit.

    3. To maintain a commonality across the Army; the RTC has

proposed to the Chief of Staff a skill set maintenance

program using RTC assets and SMEs

    Mission Statement

Soldiers learn about resilience and the competencies thatcontribute to resilience: Self-awareness, Self-regulation,

Optimism, Mental Agility, Strengths of Character, and

Connection. All of the skills that Soldiers and Civilians learn in

the MRT course build resilience by targeting one or more ofthe MRT competencies.

    Resilience and the

MRT Competencies: B.L.U.F. B.L.U.F. (Bottom Line Up Front): You can enhance your

resilience and effectiveness as a Soldier by using skills that

build the competencies that contribute to the ability to deal

    with and overcome obstacles.

What MRT skill set could this Soldier be demonstrating?

    20

  • 8/6/2019 1hr Command Resiliency

    21/37

    What is resilience?

Resilience is the ability to grow and thrive in the face ofchallenges and bounce back from adversity.

It is built through a set of core competencies that enable

mental toughness, optimal performance, strong leadership,

    and goal achievement.

    A Story of Resilience

    23

  • 8/6/2019 1hr Command Resiliency

    24/37

When is This resilience, too? Youre juggling work, issues with your new Soldiers, one of

your kids keeps getting sick, and a Soldier in your unit tells youthat your support has made a big difference to him.

How do you handle the praise

Do you give him the Heisman because of all the crap you are

    dealing with?

Do you tell him thats great but now is not the time?

Do you actively listen and feel good despite the other things going

    on in your life?

Youve been under a lot stress lately, your spouse is starting a

new job, and you made a brief to a Commanding Officer thatwas well-received.

What would be a resilient course of action for this situation?

Do you see things as getting better or are you sure that now

something bad has to happen because the brief went well?24

    Understanding Resilience

Does anyone in the Class have a story of resilience in action.

Everyone create a list of the strengths, skills, and abilities that

you believe are critical for resilience.

Focus on solutions when change is possible; acceptance when

    it is not

Are more accurate about how much control they have

    Take better care of themselves

Are more likely to try new strategies when current ones arent

    MRT skills make

    you stronger, not softer.

They increase your ability to cope with stress.

They increase your ability to overcome

    setbacks.

They increase your ability to solve problems. They increase your ability to remain task

    focused.

They increase your ability to perform under

    pressure.

    They increase your confidence.

    They decrease helplessness, depression, and
