Apostrophes

DEFINITION: AN APOSTROPHE LOOKS LIKE A COMA BUT IT IS RAISED OFF THE LINE OF WRITING.

THEY CAN BE USED TO SHOW POSSESSION ON WHERE A WORD OR WORDS HAVE BEEN SHORTENED.

THEY ARE ALSO USED TO SHOW THAT YOU HAVE MISSED LETTERS OUT OF WORDS. YOU CAN USE AN APOSTROPHE TO SHOW WHERE THE MISSING LETTER SHOULD BE, IT IS KNOWN AS A CONTRACTION.

ACCIÓN

6. We don’t want to go now.

Forming Plural: We don’t use apostrophes to form plurals.

Apostrophes and Plural Nouns:

1. Add only the apostrophe to form the possessive of a plural noun that ends in “s”.May I take your friends’ book?

Friends= plural of friend. Plural possessive Noun.

2. Add the apostrophe and “s” to form the possessive of a plural noun that does not end in “s”. These are children’s book. Children= Plural possessive Noun.

Misuse of Apostrophes

Never use the apostrophe after a plural noun that does not show possession. There are many car’s in the parking lot. (wrong).

There are many cars in the parking lot.

Never use apostrophe with possessive pronouns- Its, hers, his, yours, ours, and theirs. They do not require an apostrophe because they already have shown possession.
