• Yawning happens when the body is tired. A tired body slows down. It does not readily get rid of metabolic waste. Thus, too much carbon dioxide remains in the blood, which, in turn, activates the breathing center.

• The body involuntarily opens the mouth wide, takes in an enormous amount of air, and then pushes out a large breath that expels a lot of carbon dioxide.

Hiccups happen when the breathing center activates the diaphram to inhale air, while the epiglottis at this point gets the wrong signal and closes the windpipe.

Checking of Assignment

• Recall how many times you suffered from colds. What do you do?

• Causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment of common ailments of the

respiratory system

Presentation

• Each group will represent a common ailment of the respiratory system and report to the class the symptoms, causes, prevention and treatment of the ailment.

S A R SSevere Acute Respiratory Syndrome – is a corona virus infection and very contagious. The symptoms are very high fever, shortness of breath, dry cough, headache, muscle pains, loss of appetite, sore throat, fatigue, and diarrhea. There is no known treatment for SARS.

COPD

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is a lung condition usually caused by smoking. People with COPD have difficulty breathing. In the early stage of COPD, they may feel breathless during physical activity. Eventually, they have trouble breathing even at rest.

COPDThe lungs’ airways are called bronchi, or “branches.” They divide and spread throughout the lung and end in tiny sacs. In someone with normal lungs, these sacs inflate upon the inhale and deflate upon the exhale. In people with COPD, the sacs don't work properly because they are damaged (this condition is also known as emphysema) or the bronchi become inflamed (chronic bronchitis).

A tracheotomy is a surgical procedure in which a cut or opening is made in the windpipe (trachea). The surgeon inserts a tube in the opening to bypass an obstruction, allow air to get to the lungs, or remove secretions. Tracheostomy refers to the opening itself.

Application
