“The Mob essentially created the term ‘stand-up comic’ — according to comedian Dick Curtis: ‘The Outfit used to manage fighters. A stand-up fighter is a guy that is a puncher. A stand-up guy was a guy who was tough and you could depend on. The Outfit managed fighters and they managed clubs that booked comics, so the term found its way into the lexicon of nightclubs. A guy who just stood there and punched jokes — joke, joke, joke — he was a stand-up comic.’” ― Kliph Nesteroff, The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels, and the History of American Comedy
You may recall that, on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, I spoke of my newfound hobby of performing improvisational comedy. With the whimsical holiday of Purim on the way, I’d like to say a little about another pastime I’ve tried over the past year: stand-up comedy. I know what you’re thinking: “But Rabbi, your jokes on the bimah are so bad; why would you inflict them on an audience that actually expects to laugh?” It’s a fair question. After all, if I try to say something funny during services, it’s often when the congregation least anticipates it. An audience at a stand-up show or an open-mic night, however, demand humor from the beginning until the end. Why would I subject myself to the ridicule — or, at the very least, the indifference — of total strangers? Certainly, I’m motivated by the challenge of making people laugh, and by the emotional rush of succeeding (however infrequently). But I also view a successful stand-up routine as an intellectual triumph. Many of the best jokes take listeners to a place they least expect. I remember a joke Steve Martin once told at the Academy Awards years ago: he recalled a screenplay he submitted to a studio, noting that the editors didn’t change one word — and that word was on the third line on page 358. To quote Billy Crystal in Mr. Saturday Night: “See what he did there?” Likewise, I’ve found that my jokes that have gotten the best responses in the three times (as of this publication) I’ve tried stand-up have been the ones that involve intellectual sleights-of-hand; you think I’m going to say one thing, but then I say something different. Obviously, I’m no comedy expert. But I believe that, in many ways, the reading of the Megillah (the book of Esther) on Purim is, in many ways, a stand-up comedy routine. The public reading of the Megillah is meant to be a performance. A Megillah is shaped in a scroll that is unfurled, much as a letter in the days of yore a messenger would pronounce, preceded by the phrase “Hear ye, hear ye.” The people that chant the Megillah are encouraged to inject humor into their chanting, sometimes pantomiming the scene they’re describing, or singing in absurd voices. But it goes beyond that. The book of Esther itself has many of the same intellectual sleights-of-hands found in the best stand-up material. Just when you think the story will turn one way, it turns another way. The king is powerful, and yet a drunkard and a fool. The villain is clever and cunning, but can’t get out of his own way. The hero is surrounded by people bereft of integrity, and yet he is as noble as anyone in the Bible. The heroine is shy, but an entire people needs her to speak boldly, lest they perish. In the story of Esther, nothing happens the way you might expect — which is perhaps why it lends itself so much to comedy, and the silliness in which we celebrate Purim. More importantly, just like the best stand-up comedy, the book of Esther reveals important truths about humanity and society while making us laugh at the same time. Amidst all the irony and goofiness, we learn from the story of Esther the values of standing up to tyranny, staying true to our ideals, and concerning ourselves with the fate of others around us. I hope you’ll join us on Purim to be reminded of these values.

J.R. Stockton once said that "February is merely as long as is needed to pass the time into March." Well, at Synagogue Emanu-El there are so many things happening in the month of February that we all hope the month of February stays as long as possible. February 3rd, Daniel Nirenblatt’s Bar Mitzvah February 4th, World Wide Wrap February 10th, Sisterhood Anniversary Shabbat February 16th, Friday Night Live February 24th, Sisterhood Shabbat February 28th, Purim Party The events above are organized by our synagogue staff, volunteers and members of our Board of Directors. One such individual who goes out of her way to devote her time and energy to such events is our President Elect, Marsha Gewirtzman: Marsha was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. She is married to Neil and have one son, Brett, who currently resides in Santa Barbara, California with his wife Kate and their two dogs, Lenny and Frankie. Marsha and Neil currently reside on Kiawah Island. Prior to her retirement on Kiawah, Marsha was an executive in New York with numerous Fortune 500 companies. Marsha loves tennis, fitness and hiking and devotes as much free time as possible to the synagogue and other charities in the Lowcountry. We are so lucky to have Marsha as a leader and patron of our synagogue. Most of our programs are guided by Marsha’s insight and efforts. She is going to be an outstanding President. The next time you see Marsha please give her a big thank you! Before I end this month’s Scroll article, I just want to remind everyone again of the importance of building the Synagogue’s endowment through the Life and Legacy program of the Charleston Jewish Federation. Mike Mills and Bill Golod are spear heading the program for Synagogue Emanu-El. I am proud to say that our Synagogue was one of the leaders in the legacy program for 2017. It is a simple process to name the Synagogue as a beneficiary of an insurance policy, retirement plan or beneficiary under your Will. It is essential for us to sustain the Synagogue now and into the future and this simple process will help us achieve such goals. I urge you to please contact Mike or Bill and they can tell you the simple steps to get this accomplished. Have a great February and I hope to see you around the Synagogue. Paul Lynch

I am sure you will join me in saying good-bye to January and the wonderful chilling weather. Welcome back all Sisterhood snowbirds! We had our annual Donor event on January 9th. Our speaker was a new author exhibiting her book My Jewish Great Grandmother. We enjoyed a light dinner and great company. I would like to thank all that attended and also those who made a Donor Fund donation. Remember it’s still not to late to donate! During the January FNL, we had our New Member Shabbat dinner, and Sisterhood presented all new members who attended with a “goodie bag”. Join us Saturday, February 24th, for our annual Sisterhood Shabbat. I hope you are able to join us! Ladies, please don’t forget about Sisterhood’s Social Action Program, Save the Girls. We need bras!! The collection container is right outside the Social Hall doors. Sisterhood Book Club continues to roll along with great attendance monthly. Remember, you must be a Sisterhood member to participate. It is great fun and we read some wonderful books. Let me ask if anyone changes their email or phone number, please let Leah in the office know as well as Sisterhood. Don’t forget Sisterhood Shabbat, lets make this a record breaking attendance this year. It is an amazing service. Linda Krawcheck Sisterhood President 843-607-7829 [email protected]

In last month’s Scroll, I failed to thank Howard Snow and Harold Grater for their help grilling as part of Men’s Club grill team in the Jew’s, Brews and Ques competition. Thank you, Howard, for being our grill-master, and thank you, Harold, for your help. Also, thank you Harold for leading our first Spirit Night in January. You will be seeing a lot more from these two upcoming leaders of our Men’s Club. July 1st Harold will move up as President and Howard will be Vice-President. There will be no Spirit Night in February. Sunday, February 4th, is our annual World Wide Wrap at 9AM followed by brunch and a short Hearing Men’s Voice program. On Friday, February 16th, we are off to Camp Ramah for the annual Regional Retreat. It is not too late to join us. Saturday, March 3rd, is Men’s Club Shabbat. Anyone that wants to read a Torah portion, please contact me ASAP. Expect a call soon to help fill the other parts of the service. I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers as I continue to improve from my recent hip surgery. I should be out and about soon before I develop “Cabin Fever”. That is what many of our Jewish Brothers are experiencing in the Abayudayan region of Uganda due to the current famine. Our Men’s Club is a partner with the Seaboard Region of Jewish Men’s Club in helping them. The Abayudayan women hand-knit Kippot that many Men's Clubs are selling for $18 each and 100% of the money goes to support our Jewish
Brothers and Sisters in Uganda. The money helps with food, education, Hadassah School and maintaining their Jewish Life. Please support our Tikum Olam project to secure their future.

Have you moved into a new home? Do you have doorposts that don’t have mezuzot?
It’s considered a mitzvah to hang a mezuzah (an ornament with a small scroll containing the words of the Shema) on most of our homes’ doorposts. Rabbi Rosenbaum would be pleased to come to your home to help you hang your
mezuzot with proper blessings. This occasion can be simple and private, or more elaborate if you choose.
Please be in touch with the Rabbi if you’re interested in adding a Jewish flavor to your home.
