Inspiration for Jericho RoadOn April 4, 1967, Martin Luther King preached a sermon, calling people to play the Good Samaritan as they walk life’s roads.
But Dr. King urged us all to recognize that unless we change the whole road to Jericho, in a systemic manner, men and women will continue to be beaten and robbed as they make their journey along life’s highway.
“True compassion,” he said, “is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.”
The Jericho Road Project is about that restructuring.

• Started 2003 by First Parish Concord Unitarian; led by business people and ministers.
• Started out of a desire to affect systemic social change and engage new parishioners in social action.
• Complemented existing social action programming focused on alleviating symptoms of poverty (lack of clothing, food, shelter).
• Has expanded to include:
– Other faith-based volunteer pools;
– Corporate Partners; and,
– Other Communities.
