Life happens when you least expect it…As every Monday, eccentric private detective Frankie spends his eveningdrinking his usual rum and coke in his local bar and before heknows it, he is knee-deep his most absurd case to date.
Mauke, president of Germany’s railway company, isblackmailed by an anonymous caller. The only clue to hisidentity: he called from a nightclub while Madonna's "WhiteHeat" was played in the background.
Together with his sidekick, long-term philosophy studentJens, Frankie combs through the West German nightlife ofthe 80ties. The fact that no DJ seems to have ever played"White Heat" turns out to be the least of his problems.Industrial espionage, double agents, betrayal and deception –during the hot summer of 1988, Frankie is on a mad trip, inwhich the boundaries between delusion and realityincreasingly blur.
Witty and the good kind of weird, this literary debut sitssomewhere between Jonathan Ames’ Bored to Death andThomas Bernhard. It is a trip down memory lane as much asit is an exploration of a country that does no longer exist.
"The authors exceptional wit, clever observations and
attention to details grips the reader from page one."

Quite the opposite, they nd themselves withoutsocial and ideological structure, spat out into a new worldthey don’t understand. Both brothers look for freedom andrespite outside of their home. They do things all boys theirage do. Everything rather harmless, until the day they see aswastika drawn on the school campus. And not far, a group ofolder boys cheering and cajoling. Philip is fascinated anddrawn to their toughness and comraderie. He enjoys theevenings drinking and dreaming of a better future – a futurefor a stronger Germany…
2015, when both bothers are about to graduate from school, hundreds of thousands of refugees arrive all over Germany. Not everywhere the atmosphere is very welcoming. Germs
Far more microbes live in an average kitchen than in mosttoilets. A single kiss transmits millions of bacteria.
Even with an OCD level of cleanliness applied, we have toaccept that we live under one roof with tens of thousands ofdierent microbes. Every kitchen sponge, that has been usedfor one week, is teeming with an amount of bacteria that youwould normally nd in a human stool sample - up to 54billion per cubic centimeter.
So, do we already have one foot in the grave, if the disinfectantspray is not always at hand?
The internationally renowned microbiologist Prof. Dr.Markus Egert, professor of microbiology and hygiene atFurtwangen University, takes a look through the microscopewith us. He vividly explains, why there are many more germsin the sink than on the toilet seat. And why we absolutelyhave to kill some microbes, while many others of theseinvisible life companions are even important for our well-being.
His scientic study on the kitchen sponge was widelyreviewed and was rst mentioned in the New York Times andTime Magazine. With this book, he gives us the full picture.

Why human thinking can never be replaced byartificial intelligence.

Markus Gabriel studied in Bonn,Heidelberg, Lisbon and New York. Since2009 he has been Professor ofEpistemology and Modern Philosophyat the University of Bonn, where he isthe Director of the International Centrefor Philosophy. He was visitingProfessor at the Sorbonne (Paris 1).
The Meaning of Thought
From populist propaganda against knowledge (a.k.a. fakenews), the ideological fantasies associated with the digitalrevolution to the advances of A.I. research - human thought isunder attack. With his third book, philosopher MarkusGabriel concludes his trilogy on the philosophical movementcalled New Realism. In The Meaning of Thought he deals withone of the major topics, perhaps the true main concept ofphilosophy: human thought. Gabriel claims that our humanthinking is part of our senses and is subsequently tied to itsbiological conditions. We are part of the animal kingdom. Our thinking is not a form of data processing, but rather thelinking of images and imaginary ideas, which we process indierent sensory modalities. Our time frame expands farbeyond the present moment, as our ideas and beliefs stretchfar beyond the here and now. We are living beings and in ourlife stories the whole evolution is built in. Our thinking is acomplex structure that is not easily replicated - especially notby technology. In a certain sense, you could even call it a formof articial intelligence.
With his usual verve and curiosity, he combines classictheory with pop culture and sets the stage for his bold andcompelling claims. He oers new insight into a complex andvery timely subject.
His previous books have been translated into 14 languages.

Prof. Dr. med. Bruno Müller-Oerlinghausen heads a research groupfor clinical psychopharmacology at thePsychiatric Clinic of Freie Universität,Berlin. He is an internationallyrecognized expert in depressiontreatment with focus on body-therapeutic methods. Gabriele MariellKiebgis is a massage and body therapistand certied Postural Integrator withmany years of experience in numeroustreatment methods.
"With touch, our senses open up. We let memories in thathave been blocked for a long time, thereby countering stressand its negative eects. It has been scientically proven thatchronic stress is a cause of depression. The use of speciallyselected, gentle, peaceful massage techniques can helppeople with depression, who not only suer from mooddisorders but also disorders and conditions of the body, whichare manifested in various symptoms such as cold limbs, tensemuscles, pains or sexual problems."
Touch is one of the most basic human needs. A lack of touchhas been proven to cause illness for all ages. Touch can be auseful measure in treatments for physical as well aspsychological conditions.
The skin is the organ that is closely tied to our self-condenceand our identity. It has an intelligence on its own. How doskin and brain communicate? How does a gentle touchgenerate a sense of well-being? In this book, the authorsexplain the extent to which touch is part of our biologicalmakeup. How it is crucial for the maintenance of our healthand how it works as an elixir of life to mobilise our self-healing powers.
This book is not only a plea for more touch in a non-contactworld, but rather an incentive to develop a new bodyconsciousness and with it experience more joie de vivre andenergy.

Icy friends
Penguins are considered funny and cute, but the birds withthe Charlie Chaplin gait are so much more than that. They arehighly individual creatures and they are hardly ever alone. They lead a modern family life - with penguin fathers takinghalf a year parental leave. They live in extreme weatherconditions and keep every record in deep diving andswimming. Yet, the masters of adaptation are exposed to greatdangers: global warming, oil pollution and overshing of theoceans have a direct impact on their lives.
Klemens Pütz explains why penguins play a key role in ourecosystem. Why Patagonian squid on our plates aects thedecline of the rock penguins in the Falkland Islands.
A book about a fascinating bird family that we care about.

Where does freedom of opinion end – wheredoes censorship begin?
© Pia Malmus
Nikola Roßbach is Professor for ModernGerman Literature in Kassel and hasbeen working for many years on thecontrol and standardization of literaryknowledge. Since 2016, she has focusedmore intensively on censorship inresearch and teaching. She was ascientic partner in the monumental artproject Parthenon of Books by MartaMinujín (documenta 14).
Beware: Censorship!
Censorship is the rallying cry of the moment. A poemis removed from a building façade? Censorship! A painting isremoved from a museum? Censorship! A speaker is no longerwelcome to give a talk at a university? Censorship! But is thatreally what it is? Traditional censorship, as still enforced bythe state in dictatorships and autocracies, has been overcomein the modern constitutional state. However, a highlyemotional debate about freedom of opinion has erupted inGermany. The literary scientist Nikola Roßbach analyses thecontroversial discussion about the expressible and reveals itsunderlying mechanisms. She promotes a censorship debate, which goes beyond polemics and eect-seeking extremepositions. The open democratic discourse is no longerthreatened by the state, yet the danger comes from the centreof society. Who are the new enemies of diversity of opinion? And how should we respond to them?
