The Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg was re-formed in 2009 by
Martin SCHLÄPFER and is now regarded as one of Germany’s most
successful and innovative ballet companies. After Die Deutsche
Bühne had given the company first place in 2010, tanz Magazine poll
of international critics has named Martin SCHLÄPFER “Choreographer
of the Year 2010” and the Ballett am Rhein “Best Company” in 2013,
2014, 2015 and 2017. Music and dance combine in a psychological
portrait of obsessed individuals. In Martin
SCHLÄPFER’s ballet, the world becomes a stage on which the
challenges of life are literally embodied–both with seriousness and
with humor. The rejections and the cracks remain intact and are not
covered up.

Turandot, the story about the cold-hearted Chinese princess who
mercilessly beheads her admirers if she does not solve the puzzle
she has been given, is PUCCINI's last opera. Director Huan-Hsiung
LI, one of Taiwan's leading theater directors, has set the task of
interpreting the puzzles this work abandons. He considers Puccini's
Turandot from the point of view of his own cultural background and
directs his view of a China that, according to its eventful past,
sees the rise to world power as a new hope. Huan-Hsiung LI directs
the dream journey of an Asian girl into the mysterious world of
Princess Turandot.

CHENG Tsung-lung X Cloud Gate 2 22° Lunar Halo
22°
22
In ancient folklore, a lunar halo is a sign foreboding changes,
while scientifically it appears when the moonlight is refracted by
22 degrees through millions of ice crystals suspended in the
atmosphere. Accompanied by the oneiric music in collaboration with
Sigur Rós and Kjartan HOLM, this new dance piece by Taiwanese
choreographer and artistic director CHENG Tsung-lung from the Cloud
Gate 2 excavates our deepest fear toward ourselves as human beings.
Through bodies squeezing one another, creeping, mating, fighting
and killing in the lunatic, ever-changing world of high-end
technology, dancers morph into concrete symbols of anxieties,
struggles, desires and loneliness, and eventually lead us to a slim
hope of love and inner serenity. 22º Lunar Halo will enter the
repertory of Cloud Gate as CHENG takes over the directorship of
Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan in 2020.

2019 — YinQi Symphony Orchestra & Chorus The River of Agape and
Vitae
Music of Narratives The River of Agape and Vitae depicts how Dr.
George Leslie MACKAY, a Canadian missionary, sacrificed himself to
resolve conflicts and cultivated a sense of eternal hope in Taiwan.
Gordon Shi-Wen CHIN, a Taiwanese composer and receiver of National
Awards of Art, composed several pieces for The River of Agape and
Vitae with the inspirations from Dr. MACKAY’s Christ- centered life
stories, selections from CHIN’s opera Mackay The Black Bearded
Bible Man , and other relevant works of classical music. The
audience could, therefore, be deeply touched by Dr. MACKAY’s
lifelong dedication which was epitomized in his motto “It is better
to burn up than rust out”.
