Get their Attention! (3 minutes) Materials: Bag of Hero Cards
WELCOME kids to church and tell them your name. PASS the bag around the circle.
1. Each kid should take one Hero Card from the bag and NOT let anyone see it.
2. Tell the group that you’re going to count to three, and on three, they should
all make the superhero pose that’s on their card.
3. Once everyone is in their superhero pose, they should move to be with the
people who are making the same pose they are.
4. Have kids learn the names of the people who made the same pose as them.
5. ASK a few kids to share the name of someone they met in the group, then
CHOOSE a few kids to answer: “If you were a superhero, what would you want
your “super suit” to look like?”
COLLECT cards and SAY:

armor and how it helps us defeat the enemy!
GIVE each child a Bingo Card and writing utensil. Spread picture cards, picture side
down, in the middle of the circle.
1. Everyone put an X over the free space star in the middle of your Bingo Cards.
2. On your turn, toss the beanbag onto the card you want to target (point to
picture cards in middle of circle) and give it to me.
3. While I read the card to the group, everyone can draw an X over that picture
off of their Bingo Cards.
4. When you have five X’s in a row, either up and down, side to side, or
diagonally, say “BINGO!”
PLAY the game.
1. As kids get Bingo, sanitize their hands and give them a piece of candy.
2. Collect the beanbag, Bingo Cards, writing utensils, and picture cards.
3. Allow kids to repeat today’s Need to Know after you: Suit Up with God’s Armor
Those sound like great super suits! Why do you think heroes wear super suits?
(To protect them, to help them defeat enemies, etc.)
Well, God has given us something that can protect you and give you more
power than any super suits. It’s called the Armor of God and when we put it on,
we have the POWER to defeat our enemy—the devil! If you want to suit up with
this armor, then say this after me!

Bible Story Page (4-5) “David and Goliath”
1 Samuel 17
READ the following instructions:
ALLOW kids to stand up, and then READ the story:
ALLOW kids to sit down, and then ASK the following questions:
There’s a story in the Bible from 1 Samuel 17 about a guy named David. He was a little bit older
than you when he did something heroic by defeating an enemy! As I read this story to you, I
want you to participate!
When you hear me say “UP,” jump up. When I say “DOWN,” sit down. And when I say “RIGHT” or
“LEFT,” turn to the right or left!
God’s people, the Israelites, were in a battle with an enemy army called the Philistines. The
Philistines had one soldier that they used to scare the Israelites. This soldier’s name was Goliath.
He was over nine and a half feet tall, and he had really strong armor.
Each day, Goliath would go DOWN in front of the Israelites and shout for them to send a soldier
UP to fight him. The winner of the fight would win the whole battle. But the Israelites were terrified
of Goliath. They would run RIGHT away to their hiding spots every time he came out.
But one day, as David was bringing supplies to his brothers on the battlefield, he heard Goliath’s
threats toward the Israelites. He LEFT the battlefield and went right UP to the king. David said he
would fight Goliath! So the king brought DOWN a suit of armor and put it on David. But the armor
didn’t fit, and David knew it wasn’t what he needed to defeat this enemy.
All that David needed was God’s help and power to win this battle against his enemy. So David
picked UP some stones and went DOWN to where Goliath was standing. Goliath laughed at
David, but David said, “You are coming to fight against me with a sword, a spear and a javelin.
But I’m coming against you in the name of the Lord who rules over all. The Lord doesn’t rescue
people by using a sword or a spear. The battle belongs to the Lord.”
Relying on God’s power, David ran UP toward Goliath and slung a stone RIGHT at Goliath’s head.
The stone hit him and he fell DOWN, dead. The Philistines LEFT in fear, but the Israelites jumped UP
in victory. God’s power protected David and gave him the victory over his enemy.
We can have the same power as David by putting on God’s armor. He gives us this armor to
protect us and help us stand against anything that comes our way. Each day, the devil will try to
bring us DOWN by tempting us with sin and evil. We can rely on God’s power like David did by
putting on and using the full armor of God. So when you get up each day, remember to Suit UP
with God’s Armor!
1. What did you learn from this story? (Allow responses)
2. Can you think of situations when God’s armor would be helpful? (When we’re tempted to do
the wrong thing, when we don’t know what to do, when someone is trying to hurt us, etc.)
3. How do you think you actually PUT ON God’s armor? (Believe, pray, read our Bibles,
remember what God says, trust God to protect us, etc.)
During this series, we will learn more about each piece of God’s armor and how to use it!

Who thinks that superheroes are really awesome? (Allow responses) I
do, too! There are some stories in the Bible about people who saved
the day by defeating an enemy, just like superheroes do.
But instead of using superpowers, these people we read about in the
Bible suited up with God’s armor and relied on His power to help
them!
I’m going to tell you about one of those people. This story comes
from the book of 1 Samuel, chapter 17. It’s about a boy named
David (point to David on front of card). He did something heroic
because he put on all of God’s armor.
Now, as I’m reading this story, I want you to test your superhero
reflexes! When you hear me say UP, I want you to jump up as high as
you can! And when you hear me say DOWN, I want you to sit down.
If you’re ready to do this, stand UP with me! (Stand up with kids)

God’s people, the Israelites, were in a battle with an enemy army
called the Philistines. The Philistines had a very experienced soldier
named Goliath. (Point to Goliath on front of card) What do you
notice about Goliath? (He’s very tall)
Right! He was over nine and a half feet tall and he had incredible
armor. Each day, Goliath would go DOWN in front of the Israelites
and shout for them to send a soldier UP to fight him. The winner of
the fight would win the whole battle.
The Israelites were terrified of Goliath and would duck DOWN to
hide from him. No one wanted to fight against the enemy!
Would you want to fight against this enemy? (No) Why not? (He’s
scary, he’s tall, he is an experienced soldier, and he has strong
armor)

Well, David picked UP some stones and went DOWN to where
Goliath was standing. Goliath laughed at this little boy who had
come out to fight. But that’s because Goliath didn’t see the invisible
armor of God that David was wearing.
David called out, “You are coming to fight against me with a sword,
a spear and a javelin. But I’m coming against you in the name of
the Lord who rules over all. The Lord doesn’t rescue people by using
a sword or a spear. And everyone here will know it. The battle
belongs to the Lord.”
Then David ran UP toward Goliath and slung a stone right at his
head. Goliath fell DOWN on the ground, dead. The Philistines ran in
fear, but the Israelites jumped UP in victory because David had
defeated their enemy.
How did David defeat the enemy: by using his super strength or by
relying on God’s power? (By relying on God’s power)
Why wasn’t David afraid, like the rest of the Israelites? (David knew
God was on his side)

God’s power protected David and gave him the victory over his
enemy. But God didn’t only give this power to people in the Bible. He
gives it to all of us, too!
Each day, we are in a battle against sin and evil. Our enemy, the
devil, will try to bring us DOWN. We can protect ourselves like David
did by putting on and using the full armor of God, which gives us
God’s power. Over the next few weeks, we will learn more about
each piece of God’s armor and how to use it.
Can anyone think of situations when you might need to suit up with
God’s armor? (When we are tempted to do the wrong thing, when
we don’t know what the right thing to do is, when we are being
made fun of at school, etc.)
Right! You can Suit Up with God’s Armor in any situation!
So if you wanted to tell someone else about God’s armor, what would
you tell them? (Allow responses – make sure kids understand that it
gives us God’s power and helps us defeat the enemy every day!)
