Dr. and Mrs. REASON A.GOODWIN of North Tarrytown,New York, who are vacation-ing at Gulf Breeze on Sanibel, bought a Gulf front lot on GulfDrive Monday morning throughSanibel-Captiva Real Estate.

Dr. Goodwin is the editorof the World Book EncyclopediaDictionary and the word ex-pert on Password. A few weeksago, we had recieved a tipfrom a far-flung correspondent(whom we love dearly) that theGoodwins already owned Islandproperty---but they didn't;they just knew they were goingto.

Mrs. Goodwin said that shealmost hated to admit it, butthey decided to buy after justtwo days on Sanibel. They hadwanted to go to the VirginIslands, but couldn't get a res-ervation, so Dr. Goodwin said,"why don't we go to Florida? Then we can cross it off ourlist."

Last month, therefore, theyarrived at Beachview on San-ibel and promptly submitted to-the Islands' charm. Why did theycome to Sanibel while "cross-ing Florida off the list?"

"Oh, I had read about itsomewhere," said Mrs. Good-win. "Dr. Goodwin said thatit most have been my hominginstinct."

They hope to start buildingthis fall, and will visit hereas frequently as possible untilDr. Goodwin decides to retire.

Welcome.

Mrs. PETTERSEN MAR-ZONI, who returned to Birm-ingham, Alabama, Friday, wasthe first to break up the house-party at the home of Mrs, JOHNP. GLASS on Sanibel Island.Mrs. STANHOPE ELMORE,Mrs. CHARLES DUNCAN andMrs. WILLIAM BAUER all leftMonday for Montgomery, Ala-

Miss Higgins has had aninteresting career in New Yorkwhere she has been in PublicRelations and has been activein club work. She is a memberof the Board of Directors ofthe National Shut-in Society andis Chairman of the Annual Ap-peal Fund, and Vice-Presidentof the New York Chapter ofthe same association.

She is taking a prominentpart as an Executive Commit-tee member and P.R. Chairmanin the movement to save thedestruction of the Savoy-PlazaHotel, where General Motors isplanning to erect a forty storyoffice building, therefore de-stroying the beautiful Plaza fac-ing Central Park.

She is the author of severalbooks and many magazine ar-ticles, and is a past-presidentof the Washington Square Bus-iness and P r o f e s s i o n a l Wo-men's Club, a member of theAdvertising Club of New Yorkand a charter member of theNew York Women's News-paper Club.

There's a small lake-etteWhere birds used to setAnd we could be alone, to-

gether . . .

But there has been seenA new den-i-zeenOtherwise known as an al-

ligator . . .Now that our deathless lyric

has put you in the proper mood, and even though it didn't happenat a small hotel, but near thecorner of Gulf Drive and TarponBay Road, we'd like to saythat Sanibel does not always

produce the kind of incidentsthat one might expect.

To wit: There is a pondnear the corner which was for-merly the gathering place formany feathered visitors, andactually, was well on its wayto becoming a special Jsirdsanctuary within a sanctuary.

One morning, however, near-by inhabitants noticed that thebirds weren't there. And theyweren't there again the nextmorning, or the next, or thenext. The cause? The pond hadbeen picked by a spunky youngalligator as home. From allreports, he's a cute little fel-low, about three or four feetlong, and after being told ofhis playful expression, we'reignoring all stories about lostdogs, etc.

Seriously, though, we're gladto be able to report in thesedays of super highways andtraffic jams that there are stillspots where creatures normallyseen only in zoos can splashhappily about in freedom andfun...without stepping on theirneighbor's t o e s . . . o r beingstepped on!

Mr. and Mrs. C. BISCARDI,Sr., have been enjoying theirthird season on Sanibel, stay-ing at Tiki Cottage, the duplexhome owned by Cy Biscardi,Jr.

While Mr. Biscardi is ac-tively p a i n t i n g the manyb e a u t i e s of Sanibel, M r s .Frances IBiscardi continues toregale her many Island friendswith her delightful c o o k e r y .Both are, of course, enjoyingthe great Sanibel weather andare looking forward to the ShellFair where Mr. Biscardi ex-pects to display his fine oilpaintings.... ISLANDERHI-HO!

We think we've gotten thesubscriptions straightened out

If we haven't, please callor write, depending upon whereyou are.

In the many letters which wehave received, two questionsseem predominant. One iswhat is our weather like? It'sdelightful. We're trying to talkone of us into keeping a tem-perature chart, and as soon aspossible we plan to get it inthe Islander. To give a gen-eral picture, though, we turn-ed the air-conditioner on acouple of afternoons last week;as an added bit of Information,it sprinkled Saturday and Sun-day nights, which made a lightblanket mandatory for sleep-ing, at least in our house.

The other question was whendo we require notice of a changeof address. When you are leav-ing the Islands for the north(or wherever) please let usknow the week before you leave. However, we would appreciatefour to five weeks notice whenyou are leaving your northernhome and coming to Sanibel orCaptiva. Thank you.

P.S. we didn't say any-thing about hurricanes last fallbecause we didn't have any.

FASHIONS AND FUNThe Colony swimming pool, with the Gulf of Mexico to the south and parks of palm trees

and flowers on all sides, made a beautiful background for the annual St. Michael's and AllAngels Fashion Show Saturday. Even the weather cooperated and cloud formations effectivelyshaded the scene from what started out to be a hot sun. It was a gay and festive afternoonand a big success. Much credit must be given to Mrs. Paul Stahlin (Fannetta to her friends)for a superb job of commentary and to Mrs. Richard Fuller, show chairman.

Six Sanibel dress shops, plus the Thrift Shop, participated Bailey's, The RedPelican, Birglt's, Dotfi of Casa Ybel, The Sea Horse Shops and Clark's. Mrs. FrancisSaxinger played an accompani-ment of organ music,

«. • • . *RARE SHELL BEDSBy Permission of Ding Darling

The largest item brought in during the 1965 Shell Count was anoctupus measuring six feet across which some Island visitors found.Someone told them the Shell Fair would like a live speciman so theybrought it along. Unfortunately the tanks are much too small for sucha huge creature so, with the thanks of the Count folks, Mr. Octupuswas returned to his natural habitat, which was off the Causeway.Unfortunately, too, no one had presence of mind enough to obtainthe names of our visitors.

This year's count lacked several of the specimens of other yearsbut made up for it by acquiring some new ones so the final countwas 129 species. Workers and visitors alike enjoyed the coffee anddonuts supplied by Sanibel-Captiva Real Estate office.
