What is World Challenge?

• Concept – Educational Programme sees students Fund, Plan, Lead own expedition to one of 40 destinations

• Students - Leading the expedition, organising transport, accommodation, food, problem solve, communicate with each other and locals

• Manage Budget throughout

• RESULTS – Real life skills – Leadership, Teamwork, Negotiation, Financial Awareness, Tolerance, Confidence, Broaden Horizons / Perspective

Expedition phasesAcclimatisation, trekking, project, R&R

Acclimatisation: La Fortuna (Northern Costa Rica)

• 2 days in phase duration, located in Northern Costa Rica

• Terrain: Mountainous, Volcanic

• Main attractions: Volcan Arenal, a massive active volcano dominates the area, the chance to climb an extinct volcano before relaxing in hot springs

• Itineraries: Day treks up extinct volcanoes

• Accommodation: Cabins or camping

• Remoteness: A developed area with a solid tourist infrastructure

Challenging treks: Cerro Ena Peak (Central Costa Rica)

• 4 days in phase duration, located in Central Costa Rica

• Terrain: Mountainous

• Main attractions: High Altitude, (3126m), challenging trek

• Itineraries: Guided trek without porter/mule assistance, self catering

• Accommodation: covered trek shelters

• Remoteness: Trail is widely used, mostly by Costa Ricans

• Every expedition offers its share of challenge and adventure - that is how students learn new skills and reach their full potential. Learning about safety, both their own and others, is a crucial life lesson

Safe People

• When it comes to training, safety and backup, we are proud to set and exceed the standard in the school expedition industry. Our extensive training prepares World Challenge staff for every eventuality. It also enables us to provide the highest level of operational support possible and helps to continually review and improve our established procedures.

Safe Places

• At World Challenge, we work with a number of consultancies and agencies to ensure we have the most up to date in-country information at any given time. Our Expedition Planning Managers regularly visit each destination and scope out new locations, including risk assessing every aspect of an expedition.

• Diplomatic advisory services monitored 24hrs a day (FCO, DFAT, US State Dept)

• Subscribed to independent security specialists Drumm Cussac and Red24

• Annual visits to every destination

• Safety audits carried out in-country - we have the ability to re-route teams to pre-planned and risk assessed itineraries in alternative destinations

Safe Practices and Policies

• Detailed risk assessments for every activity and location Expedition Leaders trained in all policies and must pass World Challenge Training Course Every expedition itinerary signed off individually by a World Challenge Expedition Planning Manager.

• Ratio of adult to Challenger does not exceed 1:8 • Crisis Response Plan and trained team• Detailed annual review of all safety management systems• Compliant with British Standard 8848 Ventures provided by World Challenge Expeditions Limited conform to BS8848

(Specification for the provision of visits, fieldwork, expeditions and adventurous activities outside the United Kingdom).

Independently assessed and declared by the Young Explorers’ Trust on the basis of Operating Procedures and Safety Management Systems evidenced on 26th April 2008 and subjected to a further interim reviews in 2009 and 2011.

Safe Resources

• Safety is always our number one priority. • World Challenge commits a large number of resources to managing and

maintaining our world-class safety systems. Because of this, teachers, parents and students can look forward to a rewarding, well-managed experience.

• Every team is provided with the following, all managed by our Global Operations team:

• Satellite beacon• Satellite phone• Operations Centre – 24hrs emergency support• Specialist Incident Response Managers in Operations Centre• Access to RAF Kinloss for search and rescue advice and support• Leading insurance policy• Western Union terminal in-house• International medical assistance company First Assist• TUI Customer Operation emergency facility• SafeChild – child protection advisory service

World Challenge Operations Centre

• A dedicated bank of computers with a unique database used to log all incidents enabling up to the minute progress reports

• A bank of telephones including a dedicated emergency line, administration lines and emergency fax. Complex telephony that allows interaction with databases and other call handling technology

• Plasma screens and interactive computer touch screens scrolling all active incident reports and other useful data

• A file for each travelling team containing detailed country specific information such as an itinerary, in-country contact numbers, casualty and evacuation details, World Health Organisation and First

• Assist recommended hospitals and medical centres. World Challenge also holds details of each team member (including adults), photocopies of passports and flight tickets, emergency contact details for next of kin and school emergency contact details

• Detailed maps of each destination• A current and extensive library of guide books for each destination• Satellite communication contact details for every team• Live news feeds from the BBC and other media agencies• A bunk room for Operations Centre night duty staff• In-house Western Union money transfer terminal• Our own unique disaster recovery plan including a large generator to power all systems in the

event of a critical power failure and an alternative location planned for use in an emergency
