ICEBREAKER: When you were a child, what were your beliefs about Heaven? At what point did you realize that you would have to make a choice about where to spend eternity?

B E C O M E l i ke J e s u s :_____________________________________________________1. Sunday’s message focused on our need for a Savior and God’s provision

through the sacrifice of Jesus’ suffering, death and burial. How did God speak to you through this message?

2. Many individuals and religions believe that people can go to Heaven by being “good.” Do we really need a Savior? In the first message in this series, we talked about the need for an absolute standard. What would Heaven be like if we each got there based upon our own idea of “good?” See Isaiah 64:6.

3. We know from history that crucifixion is probably the most painful means of death. From these Scriptures, discuss some of the ways Jesus suffered: Isaiah 52:14 and Matthew 26:56, 27:46. What was the purpose of His suffering? See 2 Corinthians 5:21.

4. Could Jesus have saved us without dying? See Romans 6:23 and Hebrews 9:22. What happened when the leaders of the other “great religions” died? What does this tell us about the significance Jesus’ of death?

5. Now let’s look at Jesus’ burial. Read Isaiah 53:3-9 and discuss the contrast between His death and His burial. Then continue with the story in Matthew 27:62–28:10. What was man’s purpose for the stone? What was God’s purpose? When does God take something meant for bad, and use it for His good purpose?
