Enrolment 2012 2012: Fingerprints W ow! 2011 represented 10 consecutive years of high achievement in the HSC at Central Coast Adventist School. With students achieving results to be proud of across a range of subjects and topping out with ATAR’s (university entrance scores) in the mid 90’s the school congratulates the class of 2011 sincerely and with great pride. In particular we congratulate our top student on their wonderful achievement of 95.15 – our highest score in 2011. Congratulations! This class faced the incredible challenge of loosing a classmate to cancer mid way through the year and it is must be stated that they not only coped but found courage, determination and inner strength on that journey. We miss Josie and she is forever part of the graduating class of 2011. It is also worth noting again that these results further underline the consistently developing academic quality at Central Coast Adventist School. A pursuit of quality forged on the back of, what are now equal, and in some cases better, subject choices for senior students, than other local schools can match. It is also appropriate and highly warranted to affirm and thank our senior HSC teachers. Whilst all staff contribute over the journey, it is the HSC teachers who finished the journey. Whether through in-class instruction, weekend and after school sessions, as well as holiday sessions to help support our students the HSC team of 2011 gave much and we thank them for that. I also thank you all as parents for your support for us as our senior numbers grow. To grow from a non-existent program just 10 years ago to the program we have today is a real testament to effort and focus. We look forward to the further shared pursuit of excellence and significance for our students in the years ahead. E nrolment across the school is up on 2011 and that is exciting news. Trends to be aware of at the moment relate to the secondary school now forging ahead as a full four stream high school. Year 7 has over 100 students in it this year and our senior school enrolment in Year 11 climbs towards 70. The exciting part of this growth is that even though numbers are increasing, the four way split now means individual class numbers reduce to be around 25 in years 7 and 8 and our senior school average class size is less than 15! A great ratio for our senior students to maximize their HSC focus. The primary school remains strong in Years 3-6, although we have again consolidated into a double stream Kindy program as economic pressures again are felt as was the case in 2010. We expect to see classes ebb and flow between 2 and 3 classes of Kindy’s over the coming years as the economy stabilises. Pre-Kindy is strengthening and it is exciting to see all those yellow t-shirts and smiling faces. B uilding on from 2011 Speech Night the yearly theme this year will focus on the idea of fingerprints - the marks we leave behind. HSC 2011: 10 Years In a Row!Welcome

In this issue...

Enrolment 2012 2012: Fingerprints

Wow! 2011 represented 10 consecutive years of high achievement in the

HSC at Central Coast Adventist School. With students achieving results to be proud of across a range of subjects and topping out with ATAR’s (university entrance scores) in the mid 90’s the school congratulates the class of 2011 sincerely and with great pride. In particular we congratulate our top student

on their wonderful achievement of 95.15 – our highest score in 2011. Congratulations! This class faced the incredible challenge

of loosing a classmate to cancer mid way through the year and it is must be stated that they not only coped but found courage, determination and inner strength on that journey. We miss Josie and she is forever part of the graduating class of 2011.It is also worth noting again that these

results further underline the consistently developing academic quality at Central Coast

Adventist School. A pursuit of quality forged on the back of, what are now equal, and in some cases better, subject choices for senior students, than other local schools can match. It is also appropriate and highly warranted

to affirm and thank our senior HSC teachers. Whilst all staff contribute over the journey, it is the HSC teachers who finished the journey. Whether through in-class instruction, weekend and after school sessions, as well as holiday sessions to help support our students the HSC team of 2011 gave much and we thank them for that. I also thank you all as parents for your

support for us as our senior numbers grow. To grow from a non-existent program just 10 years ago to the program we have today is a real testament to effort and focus. We look forward to the further shared pursuit of excellence and significance for our students in the years ahead.

Enrolment across the school is up on 2011 and that is exciting news.

The primary school remains strong in Years 3-6,

although we have again consolidated into a double stream Kindy program as economic pressures again are felt as was the case in 2010. We expect to see classes ebb and flow between 2 and 3 classes of Kindy’s over the coming years as the economy stabilises. Pre-Kindy is strengthening and it is exciting to see all those yellow t-shirts and smiling faces.

Building on from 2011 Speech Night the yearly theme this year

will focus on the idea of fingerprints - the marks we leave behind. It will be a year spent

bringing the focus on what are the results of the words we choose, the choices we make and the relationships we have. Are we leaving the space we inhabit

better off for our being there?

Here we go again! Doesn’t the Christmas break race by!

Speech Night is but a memory.Firstly let me say welcome to

all the new families joining us in 2012.Welcome to our family! Let me also say welcome back

to all those families who are continuing the journey with us in 2012. It’s great to see you all again.I had the opportunity to say hi

to quite a few of you in Kiss and Drop over the past few days (I was the sweaty one in the suit!). It was exciting to see all the smiley faces and skipping (and that was just from parents!).As is my habit I will give you an

update on a whole range of topics that relate to us all in 2012. Here we go...

Staffing Computer Technology

In the weeks and months to come we will all again get to see the latest My

School data. I wish to reiterate some major points

about this federally constructed school comparison tool. I am fully supportive of quality assurance measures and this is currently the flavor of the month version we are required to use. Central Coast Adventist School endorses the monitoring and oversight of our program and we fully participate in this process. We certainly practice for these tests a little before the event to take the fear and uncertainty of the experience away as much as possible for the children, but we do not spend weeks and weeks teaching to these tests in order to stack results. Our curriculum expectations as

expressed by the NSW Board of Studies are broad and far reaching; so too is our way of teaching and the content and

experiences we cover. If you are unsure of how important the

tests really are let me quote Marilyn Parker, the education columnist in the Daily Telegraph:If you have doubts about how important

the tests are here are a few things to think about; the tests are small – only around 40 questions each; they have a high margin of error – if the same children were to do a similar test around the same time their individual scores could be up to 12 per cent above or below this one result; just because a school get higher NAPLAN results does not mean it has better teachers. They are literacy and numeracy tests in

years 3, 5, 7 and 9. That is all.

We welcome the following new staff who have joined us this year:

• Mr Brian Robinson – Assistant Head of Secondary

• Mr Zachary Rappell – Mathematics• Mr Gary Rogers – Science/

Mathematics• Ms Faith Williams – English

(welcome back!)• Mrs Dianne Hillsdon – Director of

Studies: Primary (welcome back!)• Mr Shane McLevey - PDHPEThe following staff have had a change

of role this year:• Mr Peter Wrankmore – Director of

Studies: Secondary• Mrs Rebecca Stratford – Assistant

Head of Primary• Mr Graeme Harris – Head of

Secondary• Mrs Erin Lovell – Head of

Mathematics• Mrs Tracey Bennetts – Year 9

Coordinator

Following on from over 15 months of planning preparation and government

funding support via the Digital Education Revolution program, 2012 sees the arrival of a broad range of new computing technologies into the school.• tablet computers for students to use in the

library• new class sets of notebook computers for

classes to use in the secondary school• wireless access through out the secondary

school campus• a digital design lab for secondary Art• the roll out of data projectors in primary

and secondary school- electronic whiteboards in the secondary

language room and libraryWhilst these units have arrived, the roll

out will take many months. These units will be established toward late 2012. Further enhancements, yet to be ordered, will be additional electronic whiteboards into the infant rooms, wireless roll out across the rest of campus and further tablets and notebook units for secondary school.Exciting days indeed.

Capital WorksIn 2012 we will pursue the completion

of the ground level of the Sport Centre. This will finally make redundant the current demountable classrooms located near the primary school. It will also deliver change rooms, showers and increased toilet space for students – all highly needed areas. We also expect to place the retractable

seating into the Sport Centre before Speech Night 2012.Planning will commence in 2012 for the

final stages of the Sport Centre - court 3 and associated storage and then below that level a space for Campus Maintenance. This will then free up the oval for further development and improvement.Planning is also expected to start on

the FINAL building on campus, a new multi-level, library/student services/secondary building that will link the existing library to the hall and secondary school. Admin will move into the existing library. Construction though would not be expected to take place for 3-5 years.

ParkingThank you! What a great start to the

year in regards to the Kiss and Drop with so many of you using the Buritz parking area. We have seen a noticeable improvement in flow rates and congestion. It makes a huge difference to traffic flow when we use the off site parking area.I wish to also share that due to increased demand an extra two disabled carpark spots will be created next to the existing one in the top car-park as well as improving ramp access in the lower carpark. This work will be placed as a priority in these first few weeks of school. We apologise that this work was not anticipated as needed for school start up.

Road to BethlehemThank you to so many of you who visited,

supported or donated toward this program. It is a truly wonderful way to finish the school year in such a celebration of faith and family. Please note it in your diaries for this year and if you have never been involved, well, perhaps this is the year to dress up, have fun and celebrate a truly remarkable Christmas.

New School Branding

New Crest Rollout New Crest and Uniform Impact

The CCAS logo has been a very recognisable school logo in the Central

Coast area since 1969. The Latin Nihil Sine Deo insignia translated to Nothing without God. The logo has evolved with the basic elements restructured into a different architecture (while retaining a crest format). The colours have been simplified to make the logo more contemporary. In redesigning the CCAS logo

it was decided to evolve the brand marque. The old red off centre torch

has been simplified and moved into the centre of the new logo. The school name and motto is now moved into one banner sash to be more cohesive. The typeface has also been made to look more contemporary. The sash is also simplified from the old fashioned style in the old logo. In place of the smaller Bible in the old logo, that is replaced with a more prominent larger and centred Bible that provides a backdrop to the central flame. The cross in the top right corner of the Bible is

a new addition that did not exist in the old logo. The crest elements are:• Bible - This is the foundation and

cornerstone of our faith.• Cross – The cross reminds

us of the price that Jesus Christ paid so that we could have a relationship with Him now and into eternity.

• Torch & Flame – In the Bible, Jesus tells His

followers that they are to be the light of the world. We

strive to be that light here on the Central Coast.

• Globe – The globe represents the impact that our local community has in this world.

• Shield – This element is symbolic of going into battle, prepared for what lies ahead.

• Nihil Sine Deo – Latin for “Nothing Without God”

• CCAS – Central Coast Adventist School

There will be more news over the coming months about the staged

integration of the new crest that was unveiled at last years Speech Night.By way of brief reminder please note

that this new representation of school identity will be rolled out, in stages, across all elements of school life - from stationary to uniform, from signage to web design. It will be gradual and well signposted. This will be most notable in regard to

uniform changes so that cost is not a factor for families in the change. In particular the uniform will be done

in intentional stages and we will allow several years for this change so that families can hand uniforms down to siblings, as has been the case in the past.We will continue to take second hand

uniforms up until the end of 2012.

Whilst it has been mentioned in other sections of the newsletter,

let us again comment on the impact of the new crest on our uniform with a few key concepts highlighted. The change to the crest is an exciting

time and a real step toward enhanced maturity for the school, however, the school remains committed to making sure this change, as it impacts on families, is handled responsibly and sensitively.• The transition to a new uniform will

be staged and gradual. There is no immediate need to change anything.

• February 1, 2014 is set as the designated completion of this change over cycle.

• The change to uniform is minimal and based primarily around the change of the crest upon the pockets of white shirts (boys and girls), jumpers, bags

and jackets.• The cost of a new pocket is expected

to be less than $7 per pocket and the school will be offering a service where once a family purchases pockets the shirts may then be left at the Uniform Shop and the pockets will be swapped over – free of charge.

• Jumpers and jackets will be made available as they arrive over the coming months and this will allow families to plan for a 2014 implementation.

• Second hand uniforms will still be taken and facilitated throughout this change over. However school jumpers and jackets will be gradually phased out of ‘second hand stock’ during 2013, ready for the full commencement in 2014. All other items continue as applicable to second hand uniform transactions.

First SabbathPlease note that our annual First

Sabbath program will be held in the school hall on Saturday, 4 February at 11:15am. This is time where we commit the year ahead to God, where we celebrate and dedicate ourselves to the service of this school. A BYO picnic lunch on the oval will

follow if weather permits. All are welcome and invited to this wonderful day. Dress is smart casual.

Years 11 and 12Investigation is underway to commence

Year 11 and 12 classes earlier in the day (8:00am) in 2013 to better line up with many other local schools in the delivery of the senior school program. A move such as this will increase flexibility of students study loads and also increase the amount of in class time each senior subject can benefit from. We will keep you posted as this is researched and developed further during 2012 before any decision is made on implementation.

Teenagers, Alcohol and DrugsLast year Paul Dillon, national

commentator and advocate for Alcohol and Substance education for students, came and spoke to our Year 10, 11 and 12 groups. He also delivered a program for parents. For the 30 parents there, and I know they agree, it was a fantastic night of empowering us with information and facts. Alcohol and teen drinking is a real

problem in all schools to varying degrees - including ours. The central coast is known as a teen drinking hot spot. Year 10 and 12 will hear from

Paul this year now that we are into a regular education cycle. Therefore, I encourage you to come

along to this parent program and hear what Paul has to share with you as parents. If you came last year please come again and tell your friends to join you this time. I look forward to seeing as many

of you as possible there for this great night; a night that gives us confidence, skills and information as parents to assist our teens as they step toward young adulthood.

2013-2017 SMP IVIt is exciting days indeed in 2012.

2012 is the commencement of the next construction of our 5 Year Strategic Management Plan. SMP IV will see us consider, dream and plan for where we next want to see our school develop, consolidate and grow.

The preceding three SMP’s have been the guidebook for where we are today. Each one has four fundamental sources of ideas and goals - students, parents, staff and School Council. Each group has an opportunity to be involved and share in this exciting adventure.

During 2012 there will be a number of ‘Dreamscaping’ sessions that you can come and participate in as well as a survey instrument that will be sent home. For those that have been with us over the years you will remember both these elements and I encourage you to get involved as you are able.

School Uniform2012 will see a continued focus on

the correct wearing of uniform for students. In particular the following areas should be noted:

• correct school shoes

• school bags

• jewelry

Uniform is only as strong as the partnership between home and school. Please do not support your students in choosing non-uniform items or allowing them to wear their uniform inappropriately.

In particular secondary students need to be aware that new supervision focus before and after school at the front gate will be used to further police uniform wearing in 2012.

Uniform is not a negotiable expectation – it is a requirement. If you or your child is unsure of the expectations please refer to the school website or ask advice from any of the school leaders in primary or high school.

First Sabbath Celebration

This is a great opportunity for all students, parents, staff and local community.

Please bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the school grounds.

We invite you to join us in celebrating the commencement of the 2012 school year.
