2 Focus on Reading A- Reading One: Organic Produce vs. Regular Produce Mr. Green has a newspaper advice column called “ Ask Mr. Green.” People with shopping problems write to him. Read this letter to Mr. Green. The writer asks two questions. How will Mr. Green answer these questions? Dear Mr. Green: Lately, I see more and more “organic” fruits and vegetables in the supermarkets. I’m confused. Often the organic apples or strawberries aren’t as red or as large as the regular ones. They sometimes have spots or insect holes. Also, organic produce can cost three times as much as regular produce! So, tell me, what exactly are organic fruits and vegetables? And why are they so expensive? Confused Shopper Bakersfield, CA Pg. 125 1 Ms Sherine El Deeb

B Reading Two: What’s in Our Food?

Chemicals aren’t just used to grow produce. They are also used to keep

foods fresh, give them color, or change the taste. Natural food, including organic food, is food that doesn’t have any chemicals orother artificial ingredients.

Look quickly at the two soup can labels below. Answer the questions.

A- Which soup is more natural? Health Country Soup

B- Which soup has artificial ingredients? Gordon’s Soup

Now read the labels more carefully. Then work in a small group to answer the questions on pg. 30.
