    What is ERP?

    The Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP):

    Enables the integration of business processes and systems to

    achieve enterprise-wide operational efficiency.

    Improves the performance of a business by consolidating the

    operations of an entire multi-site enterprise into one database, one

    application, and one user interface.

    SAP History

    In 1972, five former IBM programmers formed the companycalled SAP AG in Germany and released the first version ofSAP.

    Timeline:

    1972: SAP AG founded in Germany. 1979: SAP R/2 introduced for mainframe computers.

    1992: SAP R/3 released as client-server application.

    1996: SAP R/3 became partially Internet enabled.

    1997: Developed and launched the new dimension product line

    including CRM, SCM, and Data Warehousing solutions. 1999: SAP announced mySAP.com, the next generation of its

    Enterprise Application System, based on the Internet architecture.

    2000-2005: Introduced mySAP business Suite, NetWeaver, andXApplications.

    Definition of Modules

    Sales and Distribution (SD)supports the tasks and activities carried out insales, delivery, and billing. Key elements are:

    Pre-sales support

    Inquiry processing

    Quotation processing

    Sales order processing

    Delivery processing Billing and sales information system

    Materials Management (MM)supports the procurement and inventoryfunctions, such as purchasing, inventory management, reorder pointprocessing.

    Production Planning (PP)is used to plan and control the manufacturingactivities of a company. This module includes; bills of material, routings, workcenters, sales and operations planning, master production scheduling,material requirements planning, shop floor control, production orders, productcosting, etc.

    Definition of Modules (cont.)

    Quality Management (QM)is a quality control and information system

    supporting inspection, and control for manufacturing and procurement.

    Plant Maintenance (PM)is a complex manufacturing process where

    equipment can be rebuilt and service maintenance provided. Plant

    Maintenance is tightly integrated with PP.

    Human Resources (HR)is a complete integrated system for supporting the

    planning and control of personnel activities.

    Financial Accounting (FI)designed for automated management and external

    reporting of general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable and othersub-ledger accounts

    Controlling (CO)represents the company's flow of cost and revenue and

    used for internal or managerial reporting.

    Definition of Modules (cont.)

    Asset Management (AM)designed to manage and superviseindividual aspects of fixed assets including purchase and sale of

    assets, depreciation and investment management.

    Project System (PS)is designed to support the planning, control and

    monitoring of long-term, highly complex projects with defined goals.

    Workflow (WF)links the integrated SAP application modules with

    cross-application technologies.

    Industry Solutions (IS)combines the SAP application modules andadditional industry-specific functionality, e. g: banking, oil and gas,

    pharmaceuticals, etc.

    Financial Accounting (cont.)

    Financial Accounting consists of the General Ledger moduleand sub-ledgers of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivableand Asset Accounting.

    Data arrives into the Financial modules automatically from

    operational and planned business transactions in Logistics(Materials Management and Sales and Distribution).

    Incoming and outgoing invoices can also be created byLogistics components without data transfer.

    In addition to processing payment flows, Financial Accountingprovides the basis for identifying all valuated businessprocesses.

    Revenues and expenses from the components of Financial Accounting,

    Human Resources, Material Management, and Sales and Distribution are

    posted via cost and revenue elements in the Cost Accounting modules.

    Costs that cannot be assigned to an individual cost object are allocated to cost

    centers or to internal orders.

    Finished products for sales orders are debited in Product Cost Controlling with

    material costs, production activities, and overhead costs.

    Prices for production activities are transferred via internal cost allocations to

    the cost objects.

    Overhead costs can be transferred to cost objects by cost centers or internal

    orders.

    Getting Started with SAP: User Setup

    User profile is established to identify the authenticity of the

    individual logging on to SAP. It specifies the functions that the

    user is allowed to use.

    Users personal default settings are set.

    Favorite list of transactions, reports, files that user uses the

    most are organized. Activity groups (user roles) are set up using the Profile

    Generator so that users of the SAP system can work with user-

    specific or position-related menus.
