HEAD COACH MIKE BOYNTONSecond season | South Carolina, '03

►Mike Boynton took the reigns of the program in 2017 and wasted little time reignit-ing the Cowboy basketball fanbase.

►Under Boynton, the Cowboys have posted six wins over ranked opponents, including four victories over top-10 squads.

►In 2017-18, OSU tied the school record with 15 home wins and notched four victories over teams that advanced to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament.

►With over a dozen years of experience at the Divi-sion I level, Boynton has been a part of nine combined postseason runs as a coach and a player, including NCAA Tournament appearances in four of the last five years.

►His philosophy on life and the game of basketball can be summed up in his favorite saying – let’s work – and his Cowboy teams will be a living embodiment of that, with hard-nosed defense and up-tempo attack.

THE BASICS

►Oklahoma State begins the 80th season of basketball in historic Gallagher-Iba Arena when the Cowboys host UTSA for their home opener on Wednesday night. The Cowboys are coming off a heartbreaking loss in their season opener at Charlotte, but will look to regroup against a Roadrun-ner squad that is taking on its second straight Big 12 opponent. OSU is led by its junior captains Cameron McGriff, Lindy Waters and Thomas Dziagwa, who all scored 15 points or more in the season opener on Saturday. UTSA fell to 0-2 after an 87-67 loss to Oklahoma on Monday, but is led by the duo of Keaton Wallace (15.5 ppg) and Nick Allen (15.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg).

ON THE AIR

►The matchup between the Cowboys and Roadrunners will air on FSOK-Plus at 7 p.m. Central. Mike Wolfe and former Cowboy guard Bryndon Manzer will handle the on-air duties. Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call.

OKLAHOMA STATE SNAPSHOT

►Heartbreaking OpenerThe season opener at Charlotte showed how explosive the Cowboys can be, and at the same time, how young and inexperienced the team is. OSU raced out to an 18-point halftime lead thanks to 65 percent shooting in the opening frame, and even stretched that lead to 24 points with 14 minutes to

play. That's when OSU's shooting touch went cold. The Cowboys were 2-of-20 from the floor for the rest of the contest and the 49ers relied on their veterans to take advantage. Charlotte's Jon Davis, a career 1,500 point scorer, posted 20 second-half points, including the banked in 3-pointer with 0.6 on the clock to hand OSU a 66-64 loss.

►Home Opener SuccessSaturday marked the beginning of the 110th season of Cowboy basketball. The Cowboys are 97-12 (.889) all-time in home openers, including a 76-3 (.962) record in home openers in Gallagher-Iba Arena. In fact, OSU has won 42 straight home-openers in GIA dating back to 1974-75. OSU's last home-opening loss came at the hands of No. 11 Alabama, 74-67, on Dec. 2, 1974.

►Plenty of New CowboysThe Cowboys are bringing a new-look squad to the floor in 2018-19. OSU has nine newcomers to the roster, which are the seventh most among all Division I schools nationwide. Only nine schools return fewer letterwinners than OSU's four returners. Those four returners accounted for just 30.1 percent of the team's minutes in 2017-18, which ranks 14th nationally in fewest minutes returning this year.

►80th Year of the White MapleThe Cowboys are entering the 80th year on the historic white maple floor of GIA, which has the distinction of being the oldest in college basketball. Since hosting its first game on Dec. 9, 1938 (a 21-15 win over Kansas) the GIA floor has seen OSU amass an 800-228 (.780) home record, which has included just eight non-conference home losses since 1987. In 2005, the floor was named in honor of Eddie Sutton, who won 804 career games and led OSU to Final Four appearances in 1995 and 2004.

►McGriff Poised For BreakoutCameron McGriff, a team captain for 2018-19, was averaging 6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds over the first 17 games of 2017-18 - and then the light switch came on. Over the remaining 19 games, McGriff tallied 10.1 points and 6.2 rebounds on 38.9 percent shooting from 3-point. He led OSU to road wins at Kansas and West Virginia with 20 points and nine rebounds in each contest, and bullied Oklahoma with 18 points and nine rebounds in the Big 12 Championship opener. McGriff started the 2018-19 season on a tear as well. He posted 17 points and six rebounds at Charlotte, which are both team highs, and added two assists, two steals and a block.

►Cowboy Splash BrothersJuniors Lindy Waters and Thomas Dziagwa are neck-and-neck on the program's career 3-point shooting charts. Dziagwa has now hit 75 career 3-pointers and Waters isn't far behind at 72, and both are on pace to join the OSU career top-25 this season (25th is Chad Alexander with 97 3-pointers). But that's not where the similarities stop. Dziagwa holds a slight edge in 3-point percentage at 39.5 to 39.3, which ranks them 12th and 15th in school history, respectively. The duo is nearing the program's top 25 in career 3-pointers attempted, with Dziagwa at 190 attempts and Waters at 183.

►Likekele StoryFreshman Isaac Likekele (pronounced like "likely") has emerged as a natural leader for the young Cowboy lineup. The former Texas 5A state champion and all-state guard from Mansfield Timberview High School has a vocal leadership style to go with length and versatility that could allow him to make an immediate impact at OSU, especially on the defensive end of the floor. Boynton has been quick to describe Likekele as "in the mold of" Cowboy greats Tony Allen and Marcus Smart. Likekele led the Cowboys in scoring (10.7) and ranked second in rebounds (5.7) in OSU's Euro tour.

►Euro TripOSU experienced a 10-day European tour that featured a pair of wins and countless sightseeing and team-building opportunities. On top of going 2-1, OSU averaged 75.7 points and handed out 16.7 assists per game while seven play-ers averaged at least 8.0 points. OSU toured Venice, Rome and Athens during their 10 days abroad, and got 10 extra practices prior to departing.

►"Indian of the Year"The 2018 American Indian Exposition honored Lindy Waters with their Indian of the Year award. The AIE is one of the oldest and largest intertribal gatherings in the United States. The celebrations dates back to 1924 and includes representatives from nearly 50 native tribes each year. Past Indian of the Year award winners include Willie Nelson, Roy Rogers and Crystal Gayle. Wates celebrates his Kiowa/Cherokee heritage, and was presented the award after four days of celebrations and parades.

►Transfer of PowerAndy Katz named Curtis Jones one of the nation's top-15 transfers heading into the 2018-19 season. The Richmond, Virginia native appeared in 40 games for Indiana over the previous two seasons, and is expected to be eligible for the Cowboys at semester break (OSU finals end Dec. 14). The junior shot 35.0 percent (21-of-60) from beyond the arc in 2016-17, and scored 3.5 points in 11.2 minutes per game as a true freshman. Jones was a standout at Huntington Prep and a consensus top-100 recruit prior to his time in Bloomington, Indiana.

►The GraduateA veteran of 96 career games and 1,181 points at USC Upstate, Mike "Chico" Cunningham brings an instant dose of experience to a young Cowboy roster. The lone senior on this year's squad, Cunningham has connected on 215 career 3-pointers at a clip of 37.3 percent. He owns 65 career double-digit scoring games and 14 career 20-point performanc-es. Cunningham earned his bachelor's degree from USC Upstate in Interdisciplinary Studies, and is pursuing a master's degree in leisure studies from OSU.

►Defense-First MindsetOklahoma State has always been about defense. Mr. Henry Iba (1935-70) was known as the "Iron Duke of Defense" thanks to his swinging gate principles and shot-blocking phenom Bob Kurland. Eddie Sutton revived that tradition with All-Americans like Bryant "Big Country" Reeves and Tony Allen, and Mike Boynton is bringing his attacking defensive style today. The 2018-19 Cowboys play extended, high-pressure defense that looks to speed up opponents and force turnovers. In fact, OSU forced at least 10 turnovers in 32 of their 36 games last season.

►Coaching VeteransCowboy head coach Mike Boynton is one of just 12 coaches in the country, and the only coach in the Big 12, to have the luxury of multiple former head coaches on his staff. John Cooper is a veteran of over 100 wins as a head coach at Miami-Ohio (2017-17) and Tennessee State (2009-12), while Scott Sutton spent 18 seasons as the head coach at Oral Roberts, where he posted 328 career wins.

►Home, Sweet HomeThe Cowboys won a school-record tying 15 games in Gallagher-Iba Arena last season, which strengthened OSU's already stellar record in the "Madison Square Garden of the Plains". Overall, the Cowboys are 800-228 (.780) in GIA, but own a stunning 214-8 record in non-conference home games since 1989.

►Preseason PollsThe Cowboys were once again picked to finish 10th in the Big 12 by the league's coaches. Last season, OSU went on to defy those expectations by finishing with 21 wins overall and in a tie for sixth place in the league at 8-10. The Cowboys took two out of three matchups against both Oklahoma and Kansas, and split the season series with West Virginia and Texas Tech.

►Body TransformationsKentrevious Jones is just one of several Cowboy players to make huge strides in improving their bodies thanks to a rigorous strength & conditioning and nutrition program monitored by Jake Manzelmann. Listed at 6-10, Jones went into the summer weighing 320 pounds, but dropped over 50 pounds and now checks in at 265. Duncan Demuth needed to go the other direction with his weight. At 186, Demuth was undersized for the Big 12 at 6-8, but over the summer he jumped to 206 pounds. Isaac Likekele needed to refine his weight, and went from 223 pounds to 202 and lowered his body fat from 14 percent to 7.5.

►2017-18 in ReviewMike Boynton's first year in Stillwater was one to remember thanks to six wins over ranked opponents, including a school-record four victories over top-10 teams, and a school-record tying 15 home wins. Built on the mantra "Let's Work," the Cowboys became the first team to sweep the regular season series with Kansas since 2001. The senior trio of Jeffrey Carroll, Mitchell Solomon and Kendall Smith helped the Cowboys advance to the third round of the NIT and re-ignite the OSU fanbase.

CHARLOTTE 66

QUICK HITTERS►Charlotte's Jon Davis banked in the game-winning 3-pointer with 0.6 remaining to defeat OSU on Saturday.►Davis' 3-pointer capped off a 32-10 49er run over the final nine minutes and helped Charlotte overcome a 24-point second-half deficit.►The Cowboys led by 18 points at halftime, 37-19, which tied for the largest halftime lead surrendered in a loss in program history.►Cameron McGriff posted 17 points and six rebounds to lead OSU in both categories. He was 8-of-8 from the line in the second half.►OSU led 64-61 with five seconds on the clock when Lindy Waters was called for a flagrant foul on Davis, who had just crossed mid-court. Davis, who finished with 27 points, hit both free throws and then sank the contested 3-pointer for the win. ►OSU shot 65.0 percent in the first half and knocked down 7-of-9 3-point attempts, but was 2-of-20 from the floor and 0-of-8 from 3-point after going up by 24 points with 14 minutes to play.

QUOTABLE COWBOY Mike Boynton after the game ... ►"Give Charlotte a lot of credit. We jumped on them pretty good, but they kept scratching and clawing. We've gotta get better and learn from this. We've gotta teach our young team how to finish a game, and not just at the end."

OKLAHOMA STATE 90

QUICK HITTERS►Oklahoma State overcame an 11-point deficit in the final 2-1/2 minutes to help the Cowboys defeat UTSA 90-85 in overtime.►Cezar Guerrero tied a then-OSU single-game scoring record for a freshman with 29 points to fuel the OSU comeback.►A conventional three-point play by Guerrero with 18 seconds to play cut the lead to 77-74. The speedy fresh-man then stole the in-bounds pass, stepped behind the arc and drained a trey with about eight seconds to go, sending the game into overtime.►OSU took a 30-25 lead into the half, but UTSA out-scored the Pokes 52-47 in the second half.►Le'Bryan Nash added 18 points and nine boards, while Philip Jurick posted his third straight double-figure rebound game with 10 boards.►The Roadrunners were led by former Cowboy and NBA star Brooks Thompson, who was in his sixth year at UTSA at the time.

QUOTABLE COWBOY Le'Bryan Nash on Cezar Guerrero's performance ... ►"To tell you the truth, when Cezar hit his first three, I thought we were back in it, even though we were down by eight or something. I was like, 'I know the seat was getting hot ... something good is gonna go for us. Then (Cezar's shot) happened, so we all believed in it, that's why it happened, us all believing in it."
