WHAT IS A ROCK?

A rock is a solid material made of minerals.

The rocks you see around you – the mountains, canyons and riverbeds – are all made of minerals.

Rocks are nearly always made of mixtures of different minerals. 

Think of a chocolate chip cookie as a rock. The cookie is made of

These ingredients can be called the minerals of the cookie!!

TYPES OF ROCKS

There are three types of rocks. These types are determined by how the rocks were made.

IgneousSedimentaryMetamorphic

IGNEOUS ROCKS

Igneous rocks are formed by magma being cooled and becoming solid.

MOUNT RUSHMORE – IGNEOUS ROCKMany igneous rocks are used in buildings and carvings.

SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

Sedimentary Rocks are formed by broken bits and pieces of other rocks.

ARCHES NATIONAL PARK -- SEDIMENTARY ROCKMany sedimentary rocks have layers of sediment. Fossils are found in sedimentary rocks.

METAMORPHIC ROCKS

Metamorphic Rocks are rocks that have changed form due to heat and pressure.

ANTELOPE ISLAND – METAMORPHIC ROCKMetamorphic comes from the Greek words meta and morph. Meta means change and morph means form.
