Lesson 2-1: Notes Decimals to words 1. Write the number before the decimal in English words 2. Use the word and for the decimal point (don’t say point- and don’t say and anywhere else when writing out a number) 3. Write the number after the decimal as if it were another number and then write the place value position of the last digit in the number. (hint: your place value will have 1 zero for every digit) See page 89 for examples that change decimals to words: Decimals to Fractions 1. Write the number after the decimal over the place value of the last digit. (hint: your place value will have 1 zero for every digit)

Lesson 2-1: Notes

Decimals to words

1. Write the number before the decimal in English words2. Use the word and for the decimal point (don’t say point- and don’t say and anywhere else

when writing out a number)3. Write the number after the decimal as if it were another number and then write the place

value position of the last digit in the number. (hint: your place value will have 1 zero for every digit)

See page 89 for examples that change decimals to words:

Decimals to Fractions

1. Write the number after the decimal over the place value of the last digit. (hint: your place value will have 1 zero for every digit)

2. Simplify the fraction

See page 89 for more examples that change decimals to fractions

Lesson 2-1: Notes continued

Fraction to Decimals

Method #1:

1. See if the fraction can be simplified or scaled to an equivalent fraction with a denominator that is a power of 10 (10, 100, 1000, 10000, etc)

Method #2:

1. Divide the numerator by the denominator. You might need to keep adding zeros after the decimal in the dividend.

Lesson 2-2: Notes

Percents: A ratio that compares a number to 100.

To write a percent as a fraction

1. Put the percent number over 100 in a fraction.

2. Simplify the fraction

Lesson 2-2: Notes continued

To write a fraction as a percent

Method #1

1. Change the fraction to an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. You might have to scale the fraction down before you scale the fraction up.

2. Your percent is the numerator of the fraction.

Method #2

1. Change the fraction to a decimal. It is usually easier if you simplify the fraction first.

2. Change the decimal to a percent by moving the decimal 2 places to the right. ( You are really multiply the number by 100)

Lesson 2-3: Notes

To write a Percents as a Decimal

1. Divide the decimal by 100. Really you are just moving it 2 places to the left because you are dividing by 100.

2. Remove the %.

To write a Decimals as a Percent

1. Multiply the decimal by 100. Really you are just moving it 2 places to the right because you are multiplying by 100.

2. Add a %.

Lesson 2-4: Notes

Mixed Number: A number made up of a whole number and a fraction. Ex. 3 14

Improper Fraction: A fraction whose numerator is larger than the denominator. Ex 134

To write a Mixed Number as an improper fraction

1. Multiply the denominator ‘c’ by the whole number ‘A’.

2. Take that product (answer to mult) and add it to the numerator ‘b’.

3. Put that sum (answer to add) over the denominator ‘c’.

4. Simplify the fraction to lowest terms.

To write Mixed Numbers as a Percent

Method #1:

1. Change the mixed number to an improper fraction

2. Scale to an equivalent fraction with a denominator that is a power of 10 (10, 100, 1000, 10000, etc) if possible. If not use method #2

A bc

Change the mixed number to an improper fraction:

2 38 (8 x2 )+38 = 16+38 = 193

Lesson 2-4: Notes continued

Method #2:

2. Divide the numerator by the denominator. You might need to keep adding zeros after the decimal in the dividend.
