    3EDITORIAL

On the contexts of the celebration of the Bicentenary of Mexicos Inde-

pendence, the celebration of the Centenary of Mexicos Revolution, and the

    celebration of the 50th

Universidad del Valle de Mexico anniversary, our

LANGUAGES e-MAGAZINE, THE QUEST, Campus San Rafael, is proud to

launch its second number, THE QUEST, THE BEGINNING - 02/2010, full of

our students work and teachers contributions, having enjoyed a rainy, but

exciting summer packed of celebrations and swamped with the expectation

of having Mexicos football team as part of Africa 2010, now, experiencing a

rainy and cold autumn, hoping disasters around our country stop. While reading about the worlds cuisine, places to visit, famous people, and

classical music composers who have been part of our history, we can reflect

about helping our environment in a positive and productive way. Waves of emotions lead us to celebrate this second number with new and

different ways of demonstrating what we have done through the first 2010

semester, given the case of some of the projects presented by our students

of different majors, remembering our English Academic Week held at Uni-

versidad del Valle de Mxico, Campus San Rafael, from April 12th

    to April

    16th

, 2010, besides knowing about UVM teachers and the subjects they

    teach.

Lets be part of THE QUEST, THE BEGINNING - 02/2010 to learn more and

    get pleasure from it.

In 1992, with the objective of giving the consumer the best, Sabritas created the

Centro de Investigacin y Desarrollo Agrcola to support the process and research

    that has benefited Mexican producers.

In 1994, by the first time, Sabritas incorporated Tazos which

were their most successful promotion, lasting more than a year.

In 1996, a new factory was born in Mision, Texas, followed by a new factory was born in

Veracruz, Mexico, one of the most sophisticated in the world, in 1999.

In 2000, Sabritas launched their web page, a site for children, teens and adults to get

    along and have fun.

In 2001, Sabritas Foundation was born supporting the education and health of kids and

    teens living in extreme poverty.

In 2002, Sabritas bought Mafer, a peanuts producer.

In 2003, Sabritas celebrated its 60th

anniversary delivering quality and care, always with

the same idea in mind: To keep bringing smiles. So, a new factory was born in

    Mexicali.

In 2004, Sabritas started with the Activa2 movement with the support of PepsiCo

foundation, Sabritas and Activate, promoting physical health in order to have a good

way of living. Besides that, Sabritas started producing Salsabritas, in Vallejo.

In 2005, Sabritas received an award as Empresa Socialmente Responsable given by

    Centro Mexicano de la Filantropia.

In 2006, Pepsi, Sabritas, Gamesa, Quaker, Gatorade and Sonrics

presented a program called Vive saludable, which had, as a

main objective, to continue with the research for the expansion of

new products and promoting health. So, in 2007, Sabritas

presented the program Vida Saludable in schools.

    NOWADAYS

On the one hand, the consumables cost of Sabritas product has increased causing

gradual increase ranging from 5 to 7% their prices through last year. The regional

president of Sabritas in Mexico indicated that potatoes are the main ingredient used

for this product, as a consequence the products costs have been doubled. He said that

the company has been absorbing costs because they expect to maintain the prices as

    they are nowadays.

On the other hand, the Sabritas company directive commented that nowadays

costumers are looking for a healthier low-fat product, as a consequence, there has

been a decrease on their sales, because Mexicos specialists are dealing with obesity,

nearly related to junk food and unhealthy ingredients used by Sabritas.

As a consequence, since 2008, Sabritas has been launching its strategy of

sustainability, based on: Consumer with Sense, Atmosphere with Sense, Talent with

Sense and Mexico with Sense, offering new products which are healthier because

their main ingredients are dehydrated fruits like bananas.

    Lets give them a try.

    8FORMALITY vs

CONVENTIONALIYTWO WHEELS WILL DO - PART TWO

---------------by Octavio Plaza C.EL teacher at UVM, Campus San Rafael

    Firstly, cars wouldnt be allowed

    downtown and its surrounding area;

there could be car parks nearby, where

people who needed their cars to

commute long distances could find a

parking spot. However, they could still

be able to hire a bike at a fairly

    reasonable price at convenient bike

    rentals which you could find

    everywhere, to access the downtown

area. There might be special bike paths

for the elderly and children. And police

officers would look after them. Parking

lots formerly designed to hold cars,

would now house bikes just like in cities

such as Amsterdam. The use of bikes

could eventually extend to a wider

area, making more and more people

enjoy riding to work or school. This will,

little by little, discourage the use of cars

in big cities and could encourage other

    cities implement the system.

On the other hand, Biking in a city like

Mexico could be hazardous due to de-

linquency and crime; however, if gov-

ernments along with society are ready

for a change, they could work out ways

to protect their citizens by means of ef-

fective safety programs as well as well

illuminated streets and bike paths. Cars

are not allowed, so there might not be

such violence trying to steal a cheap

bike. Bike theft can be a problem too.

Overpopulation would soon producea saturation of bikes making it easier

for thieves to steal them. Many people

    could paint or otherwise decorate

their bikes to make them easier to find

back among other bikes. Also, a

    uniquely decorated bike works

    9

like bike theft insurance and one or two

good locks. Bike thieves prefer bikes

that look common as they are harder to

    spot and easier to sell.

    All in all, bikes represent

    environmentally friendly cheap means

of transportation in a city where a

30-minute bike ride several times a

week would have huge benefits for a

    population like Mexico, where 90

percent of the people lead sedentary

lifestyles and heart disease is the

    countrys number one killer.

    Traffic problems would be reduced

dramatically, making the citys air less

polluted, and citizens fitter and more

    relaxed contributing enormously to a

high quality of life, therefore the

    answer to our transportation problems

is not just the construction of new

systems or roads and freeways we

should look back to our humble

    two-wheeled friend that we forgot

about years ago and that could

represent our last opportunity to a

    better life.

    10FORMALITY vs

CONVENTIONALITYTO DO OR NOT TO DO HOMEWORK, THATS THE QUESTION

----------------by Gabriela Lpez QuesadaEL teacher at UVM, Campus San Rafael

    Students and teachers regularly think

    about doing homework having mixed

feelings because of the amount of work

it signifies, for students to do it, for

    teachers to check it.

    But, is homework necessary?

    Is it worth?

    When assigning homework teachers

should consider the type of activity

students should do, and how long they

will be spending to have it ready to

deliver it on time, well done, and

    having learnt from it, besides

considering the time teachers will spend

checking and marking of work, not just

one piece of work, but 20 or 30 per

    group, dealing with copied answers,

    incomplete exercises, and styles and

    handwriting which sometimes are

    incomprehensible.

At this point, it is important to highlight

that any work our students do, needs to

be checked thoroughly by the teacher,

which means, we respect our students

    time, work, and effort, besides

monitoring and being aware of their

  • 7/30/2019 2. the Quest - The Beginning 2or

    11/32

    progress.

    Homework should be considered and

used as a help for teachers and students,

few times, to introduce a topic, the most

of the times, as a follow-up activity in

    which students will discover the

problems and doubts they might have,

facing tasks based on what was learnt in

class, but from different points of views.

    Dos

To really get benefits from homework,

    teachers should consider:

    The purposes of homework, which

should always be related to the topics

    seen in class.

The amount of homework which will

vary according to the level, frequency of

    class and purpose of it.

    11

    The frequency of homework. Students

would appreciate if they know, in

advance, how often they will be required

to do and to deliver homework.

    The format required to deliver

homework. Since the very beginning of

the course, students should know about

the way in which they should hand their

    homework in.

    The teacher and students

    responsibilities. Homework is not only

    having our students practicing, learning

or remembering, but checking, with their

    teacher their doubts, working on

remedial work and always having their

    work checked.

Evidence. Homework is not only an

exercise done to revise or to practice, but

reflects what we have learnt through the

course, material that can be also used as

    a review before the exam.

  • 7/30/2019 2. the Quest - The Beginning 2or

    12/32

Reason why keeping their work checked,

clean and organized in a portfolio will

give them the opportunity to use it in a

    very positive way.

    Donts

Homework should not be assigned as an

excuse, as a filler, to entertain, or just

because it should be marked to get cer-

tain amount of points. So, lets bear in

    mind that:

Homework should never be assigned as

    a punishment.

    Homework should never be assigned

just for the sake of having students do-

    ing something at home.

    12

Homework should never be assigned to

justify the homework score students will

    get.

Homework should never be assigned to

introduce topics which might be difficult

    for students.

    Homework should never be assigned

based on topics that were not covered in

class because of lack of time.

    Homework should never be assigned

when it does not promote learning.

As a teacher, try not to assigned home-

work which might be extremely easy or

almost impossible for students to do it.

    Homework should serve practice, prepa-

ration or extension, as stated by the Na-

    tional Education Association (NEA)1.

    SPICESPASTES

Pastes are a typical dish from

Hidalgo. They are a kind of

baked pie made of very thin

    dough, stuffed with a big

    variety of sweet and salty

    fillings, such as, arroz con

    leche, chicken with mole, meat

    or jam. You can accompany

    them with coffee or any

    other beverage.

    Ingredients

    kg flour

    100 g butter

    3 tablespoons baking powder

    1 cup milk

    1 egg

    1 egg yolk for glaze

    Procedure

Sift the flour with salt and

    baking powder. Mix them with

butter, egg and milk until you

form a soft dough. Extend the

dough and cut it into circles. Fill

    them with your favorite

    ingredients, fold them in half

and glaze them with egg yolk.

    Bake at 250C.

    Ingredients

    5 potatoes

    3 carrots

    4 eggs

    kg cooked meat

    200 g peas

    3 cucumbers

    Salt

    Mayonnaise

A bit of history. The people who used to

    attend Tchaikovskys concerts were noblemen

and women. That means they liked to eat

expensive extravagant dishes. For this reason,

in 1860 Chef Olivier created a recipe for a

salad that had venison and vinaigrette, among

other ingredients. The recipe was a secret

known only to Olivier, but after his death itbecame popular in other countries. The

ingredients have changed with the passing of

time, until the version we know today. It is a

kind of potato salad or salad with vegetables

and meat (which can be replaced with tuna),

all mixed in plenty of mayonnaise.

    Procedure

    Boil the potatoes and carrots.

    Prepare hard boiled eggs and

cook the meat. Dice the eggs,

    meat and the vegetables into

small cubes and put them in a

big bowl. Add the peas, diced

    cucumbers and mayonnaise

and salt to taste, and mix well.

    THOUGHTS

Well as part of my English course I interviewed my Effective Communication teacher

to ask her about the relation that exists between the subject she teaches and my

major. This is what she said:

This subject is really important not only for International Degrees in Tourism,

Hospitality and Gastronomic Business Administration, but also for every major we

have in Universidad del Valle de Mxico since we have to learn how to express our

ideas in a correct way, without any kind of grammar mistakes and in the appropriate

    context.

She also said that there are times when some people go to ask for a job and they are

rejected only because of the way they speak and they dont even know how to write

a CV, although they have finished their major.

International Degrees in Tourism, Hospitality and Gastronomic Business

Administration is a major in which we have to be in direct contact with so many

people who are going to grade our performance in any area.

That is why we must be concerned about our expressing and thinking due to we are

in a university level in which it is reprehensible to say or write phrases with no sense

or even worse, to say disrespectful words that are very often said by us students, no

matter where we are or with whom we are.

    Interviewee: Teacher Luz Cristina Parra.

    18HE PURE &

THE APPLIEDFRESH VEGETABLES FROM MY HOME TO MY HOME

    ---------------by Gabriela Lpez Quesada Jr.

Postmodernism, time in which being in contact with nature and healthy

products becomes much more difficult due to our life-style, but also, because

of all the new food appearing day by day.

Are there any options available?Definitely, there is a great option to be in contact with nature, to consume

healthier products, and to give our home a green touch, a simple one, to grow

    our own home-vegetables.

Why not to start with the simplest one?

Cherry tomato, which scientific name is Lycopersicum pimpinellifolium, is an

exotic but delicious vegetable with annual growth. Its fruit is bright red, with a

thumbnail size and a weight of approximately 10 to 15 g. Its flavor is not exactly

the typical tomato one, but a bit sweet, being this one of its most importantcharacteristics.

Cherry tomatoes are deli- cious and easy to grow

because they grow al- most in any climate,

indoors and outdoors, but always being in a

space with a couple of sunny and ventilated

    areas.

  • 7/30/2019 2. the Quest - The Beginning 2or

    19/32

    19

    How to start?

In a medium size pot half-full

with soil dig a small hole

(1cm depth), plant 3 or 4tomato cherry seeds and

    cover them with soil.

Be sure that the pot counts

with a base dish where it

    can always have water.

Daily add some water and put

them in a ventilated place with

    plenty sun light.

In around 6 to 8 days you will see your seeds germinate. You

should check your plant every day so that it has enough water.

Approximately eighty days after you plant your seeds, you may

be able to notice your new cherry tomato plant.

Gradually your plant will grow and you will

be able to notice very small and round

green tomatoes, which will be ready to cut as soon as

they get their typical and bright red colour!Because of the way in which your plant grows, I recom-

mend you to tie it to a wooden stick or to a small branch so it can grow in a

    better and straight way.

    Natural and delicious, isnt it?

    Enjoy them!

We are Karla Ramrez Hernndez, Diana Lobera Hernndez and Paola Marroqun. We are majoring in Graphic Design,

third semester and English level III. Our teachers name is Gabriela Lopez Quesada.

The aim of our project was to talk about Ludwig Van Beethoven.

At the beginning of the 1800s, Germany was called the Holy Roman Em-

pire, and in the Austro-Prussian War, in 1866, Prussia defeated Austria.

The most important event in Germany was the Rhine Confederation. It

was formed by 16 German states ruled by Napoleon.

An interesting fact is that each year, in Bonn, the city where Beethoven

was born, the International Festival is held in his honor, in autumn, forfour weeks.

Ludwig Van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Ger-

many, in 1770, he was a composer and pianist.

He was an important composer in the Classical

and Romantic period. His fathers name was

Johan Van Beethoven, who worked as a tenor in

a musical establishment, also giving piano les-

sons. Johan got married to Maria Magdalena

Kevench. When Ludwig was a child, his father began to teach him how to

    play the piano.

In 1779, Beethoven began his studies with his most important teacher in

Bonn, Christian Gottlob Neefe, who was appointed as the Courts Organ-

ist in that year. Neefe taught Beethoven composition, and by March,

1783, he helped him to write his first published composition. In March 1787, Beethoven traveled to Vienna the first time, apparently in

the hope of studying with Mozart. In 1795, he gave his first concert as a

    professional composer in Vienna.

In May of 1799, Beethoven gave piano lessons to the daughters of a Hun-

garian Countess, Anna Brunswick. While this round of lessons lasted less

than one month, Beethoven established a relationship with Josephine

Brunswick, but she got married to Josef Deym.

The biggest part of his musical career was developed in Vienna. Beetho-

ven spent the rest of his life, alone because of his deafness. He died on

26th March, 1827, during a thunderstorm. Beethoven was often irascible

and might have suffered from bipolar disorder.

Ludwig Van Beethoven was very talented even when he lost his hearing,

actually he was totally deaf when he composed his most important sym-

    phonies, such as, 9th

Symphony, The Last Quartet of String, and

    Sonnet for a Piano,

although he could not hear, he carried the music inside his heart and in-

side his head. Some people think that his music was very intense for

young people. Nowadays, there are many people and musicians who play

Beethoven`s compositions, some of them in their original way and othersmaking covers, such as, Moonlight song.

His most important piece of work for us is Violin Romance N 2. Every

person that performs this musical composition has learnt what love and

romance are about, so the musician can express how he thinks through

    his performance.

We think that the influence that Beethoven has nowadays is very impor-

tant because his music inspires us and makes us feel a lot of different

emotions. Even now after many years, many people knows and enjoys

    Beethoven`s work.

The aim of our presentation was to introduce to our audience to the life of one of the greatest composers of the 19th

century; we are obviously talking about Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky.

    BACKGROUND

The absolutism in Russia was stronger than in any

other European country. The history of Russia in

    the 19th

century was the history of the Czars. Rus-

sia registered a high increment in its industry, bank

system and business while the Orthodox Church was dominating the

    country.

Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, a Russian city near the Urals,

    on May 7th

, 1840. His father was Ilia Petrovich, director of the Votkinsk

factory, a job that provided him of riches. In 1833 he got married to the

mother of the future musician. The family got six descendants: Nikolai,

Piotr, Alexandra, Ippolit, Modest and Anatoly.

Tchaikovsky began piano lessons at the age of five. His parents were ini-

tially supportive of his musical talents, hiring a tutor, buying an or-

chestrion(a kind of barrel organ that could imitate elaborated orchestral

effects), and encouraging his study of the piano. However, his parents'passion for his musical talent soon cooled, and, in 1850, the family de-

cided to send Tchaikovsky to the Imperial School of Jurisprudence, in

    Saint Petersburg.

An important person in Tchaikovskys childhood was his teacher Fanny

Durbach, who guided him to the love for music. Once far away from his

house, he wrote: I am never far from my piano; it makes me happy

when Im sad in San Petersburg.

Tchaikovsky started to take music classes with Filipov, dedicating too

much time to the piano. The child was such a nervous boy and all that ac-

tivity was enough for him to get sick, so doctors prohibited him to play

the piano again. With time and little by little, the nervous sickness was

disappearing, but the adolescent kept been little sociable.

No matter what, Tchaikovsky was studying in the Jurisprudence school

with no enthusiasm and did not dedicate himself really to the music. But

his father motivated him to keep on with what he really used to like and

dominated; the man hired a teacher named Rudolf Kundinger who

opened the child to new musical horizons.

By the age of 14, Tchaikovskys mother died because of cholera, this fact

increased his nervous crisis and no longer, his father got sick too due tothe same sickness, but fortunately the family head recovered.

Once, Tchaikovsky listened to Don Giovanni, by Mozart, for the first time,

he got surprised by the strength and richness of the composer, becoming

    a model to him.

After having majored laws, he reconsidered his real vocation because his

job did not satisfy him at all. Once he said: They have made of me a civil

servant and a bad civil servant besides. So he decided to leave every-

thing to devote his life to music and to gain a position in the conserva-

tory, in San Petersburg. Musically, he was a great improviser, with such a

great sense of harmony, but his musical knowledge was until then, lim-

    ited.

Tchaikovsky is a great musician, inside his di-

gest of mu- sic we find such works as "The Lake of the

Swans "The Nutcracker", "Byzantine and Juliet",

and The Sleeping Beauty, among others.

But his most recognized work, with no doubt is "The Lake of the Swans",

which has appeared in one without end of ballet and orchestral perform-

    ances of music.

The Sleeping Beauty original cast of Tchaikovsky's

    ballet

His more known works are characterized for having very melodic pas-

sages with movements that suggest a deep melancholy that they com-

bine with others extracted from the popular music. Tchaikovsky was

dominating the orchestration; especially, his scores of ballet contain sur-

    prising effects of orchestral colour.

"The Swan Lake" tells the ad- ventures of young

Prince Siegfried who falls in love with Odette,

a princess who was transformed into a

swan by an evil sor- cerer: could only regain

their human features between midnight and

dawn. Odette explains that he is destined to

remain in that state until being rescued by a man who swore eternal love.

Fascinated by her beauty, the Prince promises to rescue her and swear

    eternal love.

    CONCLUSIONS

The life in Russia in the epoch of Tchaikovsky was problematic, it existed a

great domain by the church wanting to control, by means of God, the

thoughts and the ideology of the people.

In the case of Tchaikovsky, he found his way of expression in his composi-

tions. This immortalized his name and is still present in our days.

The Tchaikovsky's biggest influence in our days is no doubt the one that

he exercises in Russia with the ballet, his musical compositions have

served to give him power to this art.

At present, "The Lake of the Swans" is the most popular ballet, many

companies worldwide support it in his digest, and innumerable schools of

dance and academies like to put it on scene every end of year.
